5.0 classic | Channing Freeman STAFF | March 2nd 10 | Freedom exists in this record. Music that leads you brutally to the realization that all of your loneliness and sorrow and heartbreak are very punk indeed. And that is something to revel in.

5.0 classic | Knott- EMERITUS | February 5th 11 | It is messy. It's an essential distillation of fucked up people. It's not an organised work of art with pre-conceived structure and form and bounds; it's impulsive, visceral, completely derailed. Everything contributes to that. If Stickles were an operatic vocalist or even a competent one this album would probably be excellent at best. If his lyrics weren't so all-over-the-place they wouldn't be so obviously and inherently human. If this album were shorter it would mean that it didn't say all that it could and all that it wanted to, and it would dull the effect of that last climax in Hampton Roads. It's not 10 songs stuck on a CD to sell a product, it's so obviously the product of flawed and probably drunk people making a reckless and unadulterated statement on what it's like to be flawed and probably drunk.

0.0 | EVedder27 | June 17th 10 | The Monitor is a depiction of our inebriated selves; that vulgar care-free demeanor that seems to create the completely avoidable late-night debacles of our college years. Undoubtedly more often than not, these blunders are dubbed as “totally worth it,” whether we end up looking utterly idiotic or just plain immature. It’s about that last whiskey shot, that girl you wouldn’t have dared to touch three hours prior, or that incessant feeling of the moment. The Monitor is not the heartwarming or poignant type, but is purely successful because of the utilization of flaws; something that human nature is unable to avoid. If you don’t understand Titus Andronicus’ sophomore release, you are either ignorant of the human race, or you just need to get totally sloshed.

4.5 superb | Jemidu06 | March 14th 10 | Its ambitious yes, but not to a fault. Well, maybe to a fault, but if that's the case then just add it to the list of Patrick Stickles' raucously documented fuck-ups. It's a record both about missing the Fung-Wah from Jersey to Boston and about fighting your lower half's brethren for no good reason; its about fuck-ups, remember. But its also about taking those doubts, those insecurities, those moments of fucking up, and not so much taking pride in them so much as using them as motivation to scream "woe is me" in the most hooky, rocking way that you can. Its like laughing at the guy who downed a few too many "keggers and Keystone Lights", but then simultaneously realizing that you're in the same bar with him on the same useless Friday night, so you might as well just sing along with him. Enjoy these times losers, even if you've been told you're wasting them.
At least thats what I got out of it.

4.5 superb | TheBalderdashMan | July 3rd 11 | I would say that this is the closest thing to perfect that I've heard in a while, except that "perfection" is completely the wrong concept to apply to The Monitor. It's not about perfection at all, but imperfection perfectly deployed. A focused, perfect album will always be amazing, of course, but sometimes you want something that sprawls, something with the courage to go unabashedly for broke, something that will risk everything-risk being ridiculous, bloated, pretentious-in search of that crazy epic, the album that climbs Everest and pisses on the world from the summit, the album that can only be spoken of in frenzied hyperbole. Flawless? No. Focused? No. Daring, massive, and amazing? Yes, yes, and hell yes.

5.0 classic | TheStefan | December 31st 10 | I'm 5ing this. I really can't find anything even average with this album. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. My favorite from 2010 by a long shot. Very unique sound on here too, and every track is solid. Whether it be a tale of hopelessness, happiness, drunkenness, or plain stupidity, The Monitor is undeniably a wonderful piece of music. Its greatness lies partly in its subtleties, and partly in the overt music. At a first glance, it is a wonderful record. Upon further listening, it reveals itself as an astonishingly beautiful piece of music. Flawless. Flawless. Flawless. Flawless. Flaw-Less. Get it as soon as you can.

5.0 classic | qwer7yfreak | June 2nd 10 | If you haven't already, listen to this album. Listen to it over and over again. You'll fall in love with it immediately. If you don't, well, then there's not much hope for you. The Monitor is pure musical awesomeness. It's energetic, it's catchy and it's just so much fun. From its well-placed historical quotes ("A More Perfect ", "The Battle of Hampton Roads", etc.) to its stadium-filling climaxes ("A Pot In Which To Piss"), the album never ceases to amaze. It uses lyrics from Cheers and borrows from the great Bruce Springsteen ("Tramps like us, baby we were born to die!") It even has a fucking bagpipe solo in "The Battle of Hampton Roads". A bagpipe solo. Music doesn't get much better than this. This album is angry, angsty (without being whiny), and completley awesome. However, some people may be turned off by it's rather indulgent length, but it's hardly a problem as the tracks are mostly energetic enough to make you ignore their length and simply enjoy the ride. Titus Andronicus Forever.

0.0 | SeaAnemone | March 20th 10 | Talk about energy! Titus Andronicus capitalize on every tool in their arsenal that makes your blood stir in order to make their indie-rock opus succeed, and succeed it does. The sloppy guitars, lackadaisical yet impassioned vocals, and onslaught of fervor and unabashed passion all add up to so much more than your everyday rock record. Based loosely on the Civil War, The Monitor is anything but caught in the past. With references to Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Dark Night, and Bruce Springsteen (they?re from Jersey, what'd you expect?), The Monitor is unapologetic and fun throughout, from the two-minute ditties to the sweltering fourteen-minute closer. It's often said about music that is held in high regard, ?This is what [insert genre here] is SUPPOSED to sound like!" And while this cliche deion is a tad trite, I can?t think of a better way to describe The Monitor. Titus Andronicus have truly created a rocking album, a glorious product of the times we live in.

5.0 classic | McP3000 | February 26th 13 | From whence shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall some Trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe and Asia could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years. No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we will live forever or die by suicide.

3.0 good | NeutralThunder12 | March 12th 10 | A surprisingly solid album considering the muddy production. Possibly similar to "Fang Island", in terms of harmonies and energy, but maybe not on the same level, the vocals and lyrics can get irritating and a few songs are too long, but the riffs are catchy as hell. The whole sound is pretty enjoyable, but maybe a lesser version Fang Island's more impressive sound. Still and interesting album, if they would get some better production, maybe a new singer, and shorten the songs, they'd be on their way to an excellent album. Solid.

3.6 great | Erwann S. STAFF | August 13th 19 | Honestly you can feel they were young angry drunk men when they did this album. 5.0 classic | iSkane | August 19th 12 | Why is it that this album is so good? I mean, the vocals aren't anything to write home about, in fact, they could be considered somewhat bad. The production value is a little less than average, and sometimes, the songs just sound like noise. It's bands like Titus Andronicus that make me look for a brighter future in a musical present filled with shitty pop and dubstep. It's nice to know that a band can still pull off something completely original and unique and still get critical praise for such a thing. Sure, they may not be popular, they may not be played on the radio, but they still pull off being recognized by all the major music sites and magazines as one of the best albums of 2010 and one of the best albums of all time (for me at least.) Titus Andronicus makes the future of music a little less "wubby" and I'm perfectly okay with that.

0.0 | AGuyIsWatchingYou | July 25th 12 | Over an hour in length, 8/10 songs exceed 5 minute and it ends with a 14 minute closer. On its surface The Monitor appears to be anything but a punk record but it sure as hell is. While the band plays their instrument in a sloppy fashion Patrick Stickles shouts, sings, and whines some of the most loathing lyrics to ever find their way onto a punk album. It shouldn't work, it absolutely shouldn't, but it does. With their emotional modern punk classic Titus Andronicus make it so being a loser has never felt better.

5.0 classic | braveasanoun | March 28th 12 | who knew that a two hour commute to school alone could be so awesome? that is, until you don't have a voice left after. not only is the monitor the best driving album, it is also the best album to throw on while hammered (don't get any bad ideas). this album just fucking rules. when it comes to writing lyrics, stickles doesn't give a fuck about what anyone thinks of him. he knows he is a loser, and he will agree if you call him a fuck up. but hey, we are all imperfect so its okay. he has people who accept him for what he really is, so who gives a shit about the others. stickles wants us to go out get hammered, have fun, and fuck up. you can live life miserable, and do what everyone expects you to do, but in the end, what the fuck was it for anyway?

4.0 excellent | YetAnotherBrick | September 2nd 11 | Lyrically, The Monitor is an absolute delight, but musically, while for the most part being infectious, visceral, and spine-tingling, it's a bit too bombastic for its own good. There's lots of great licks everywhere on the album, but they're often carried on for too long, or have too much other stuff put on top of them. The album is too raw and dirty, and speaks of times too troubled for over-epic and over-long piano intros to not sound just a bit out of place. And "The Battle of Hampton Roads" did not need to be 14 minutes long. Sorry.
