5.0 classic | zoso33 | February 26th 15 | What Fantomas brings to the table: unrelenting, awe-inspiring moments of thrills. The way you feel in free-fall on a roller coaster, the way you can't sleep at night, the blank despair of an unlit room, the shadows in the back of your brain all meld into the free-form idiosyncratic bliss that is their finest album.

0.0 | Blurry | August 17th 07 | Hmmm... Where to start with this one.... Fantomas' self-titled debut is a collection of zany microsongs, each intended to represent a frame of a comic featured in the album artwork. With an interesting concept and something of an all-star band assembled, one would assume that Patton's concept was a can't miss proposition. Not really. While there are moments of musical excellence and a whole lot of "how in fuck did he make that noise?" in regards to Patton's sound effect-styled vocal approach, there is little to mark this album as anything more than a curiosity. It's grotesque and somewhat amusing, but never transcendent.

3.0 good | GamamJ | June 4th 20 | Prolly the weirdest shit I have ever heard. This is not even controlled chaos, just absolute madness. Patton sounds like a beast unleashed, Lonbardo?s insane drum burdts are magical, and the other instruments keep up more than well. Sometimes it hirs the mark, but often times it feels just too weird for me at least.

4.0 excellent | EasterInTheBatcave | June 9th 16 | Highly imaginative avant-garde metal from Mike Patton. He wrote all of the music, then recruited Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle, Buzz from the Melvins, and Dave Lombardo from Slayer to help him realize his vision. Thirty (mostly) short songs, no lyrics (vocals are treated as another instrument), quick changes, lots of samples and metal riffage. It all blurs together save a few moments, and subsequent Fantomas releases are better, but nonetheless the self-titled record is a worthwhile listen.

1.0 awful | Asiatic667 | June 26th 10 | After ten minutes of chugchug bass and indestinquishable babble and sound effects, it becomes clear that Fantomas is going to be little more than painful and irritating

2.5 average | Seabeast | September 7th 08 | Meh. Fun to listen to the first or second time, but after that, it kind of loses its novelty... The Director's Cut is much better for that, and probably their best album overall.
Listen to that instead.
