(11/26/18): Lunar Strain in all of its 36-minute glory was an interesting beast when it first came out, and I feel it has continued to hold an intriguing place within In Flames' discography nowadays. Before Henke Forss and eventually Anders Friden came along, IF recorded their debut album with current Dark Tranquillity frontman Mikael Stanne; DT's Skydancer featured Friden on lead vocals, coincidentally. The whole deal with vocalists aside, this 1994 record bore a strong folk influence thanks to the incorporation of violins and acoustic guitar playing, though it of course possessed that familiar melodeath sheen as well. Imagine living in a world where In Flames had established the overall style found on Lunar Strain and kept Stanne on board... Would've been super cool, that. Speaking of the c-word, so was a bunch of the material which comprised this LP.

A pretty impressive debut (despite my confusion with Staines vocal sound here) for a pretty ridiculous (at one point...) band. Lunar Strain is probably the furtherest from the classic melodic death metal In Flames, but it does showcase a few things to come, as the roots are definitely there.

Lunar Strain finds Mikael Stanne fronting the band in a rather unique album, as this is his only release with In Flames before departing for Dark Tranquility. Vocally, Stanne sounds aggressive and his raw growling supports adequately the speedy and drilling guitar riffs thrown by Jesper and Ljungström all over the album. Personally, I am not fond of this album as the band has not find its sound yet. Recommendations: "Dreamscape", "Clad in Shadows".

flames' debut is a great start, though odd hearing stanne instead of anders. prob some of stanne's best efforts actually, edging on a black metal shriek. female vox clearly inexperienced but beautiful, love the extra instruments

This is a solid debut album by In flames, which kind of reminds me of a Dark Tranquillity like sound (courtesy of their frontman mr. Stanne I believe, the current DT vocalist). If you can get past a couple of songs in the middle section, it?s a very good album

Some great melodies and all that, but Stanne's vocals do absolutely nothing for me, I just find him annoying. However, it still gets a 3 from me for the melodies, some of which are absolutely fantastic and if I disregard the vocals the album would be a 4 for me.
