It's arguably one of the most emotionally impacting debut records of all time, squeezing every ounce of sorrow and pain out of a relationship that can be imagined. The lyrics, atmosphere and singing almost make the music a non-point (despite its excellence), transcending genre.
It's one of the most underappreciated albums on sputnik and all of you should adhere to its greatness immediately.

I pretended to hate mewithoutyou for too long. Are they a little pretentious? Yeah. Are they inaccessible? Probably. But is this album amazing? Absolutely. Weiss is one of the most talented writers of all time, and the band behind him creates one of the most interesting hardcore-influenced indie rock sonic landscapes of all time.

On mewithoutYou's debut record, the rough, abrasive sound doesn't quite affect me the same way the more melodic aspects of the band's sound does on later records. Even so, it's a remarkable debut.

Their most raw and heavy offering. It?s Aaron?s lyrics and performance that really makes this stand out. That?s not to discredit the rest of the band though, they perfectly match his level of vigor and energy. It's not my go-to mewithoutYou album, but when this albums hits, it hits.

I'm sure at one point in each of our lives we've had our heart broken. It's just one of those things that happens more as a result of time and unforeseen occurrences than anything else, but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with when it does happen. Eventually those wounds do heal, some more uneven than others, but at the initial point of fracture, you wonder if there's any hope of repair. [A-->B] Life is about that initial point and the days, months, and even years afterward. Musically, it's the culmination of what mewithoutYou had been working towards in the years beforehand, with a seamless mixture of post-hardcore, indie, and art rock with an emphasis on intimate vocals and lyricism but no shortage of memorable riffs or basslines. The production works in a strange way; the guitars sound kind of thin, especially for this style of music, but it's oddly fitting in the overall sound of the record. It's quite the full-length debut for the band, and they'd only get better from here.

Jesus Christ Aaron Weiss' lyrics and execution set this album to be the most emotional and even at times aggressive album in their discography. Listen to this and try to tell me La Dispute didn't rip them off

mewithoutYou is an incredibly varied and unique band. They've covered territory from post-hardcore and emo, to artsy indie rock, to baroque pop and folk, and they've done all of that exceptionally well. Unfortunately, "A to B: Life", their debut full length is overshadowed by their other work. It's the most passionate, rawest and most jarring mwY album there is. While they may have struck gold with the two releases that came after this, this one just has a tone and a rawness to it that draws me too it more than any of their other work. And unlike all of their other full length albums, this doesn't have one bad song. "The Cure for Pain" is an incredible closer, that features an acoustic reworked version of my favorite mwY song "I Never Said that I was Brave", and is the most overlooked tune in their whole discography. Aaron has always been an eccentric but incredible vocalist, with talky, poetic lyrics and a powerful voice with which to sell those lyrics. On "A to B: Life" Aaron's vocals are at their most powerful, his lyrics at their most lucid and interesting. "A to B: Life" is my favorite post-hardcore album of all time, my favorite mwY album, and an overlooked jem in the indie rock world.

Aaron Weiss was once an angry man, frustrated by what would seem to be a dysfunctional relationship. Taking cues from the likes of At The Drive-In and Drive Like Jehu: AB Life is one heck of a raw listen that certainly will take a few listens to get into (basically like any other mWy album). However, once settled the album grows on you and becomes nothing short of brilliance with the dark raw musicianship which directly correlates to Aaron's intense passionate lyrics.
