The Misery Index came out in 2006, which is the same year that Rise Against broke into the mainstream with The Sufferer & The Witness (which is an awesome record). But unlike that likewise political-oriented melodic punk band, Boysetsfire were s.o.l. with breaking through, which is a shame because this album carries huge crossover potential and has material that could have very easily tag-teamed with the likes of "Prayer of the Refugee" or "The Good Left Undone." From this album, "Requiem", "Falling-Out Theme", "10 (And Counting)", the title track, and "Nostalgic For Guillotines" could have easily cracked modern-rock charts, especially in 2006. The rest of the material is stellar as well, especially with "Walk Astray" being one of my favorite album openers ever. Boysetsfire switch it up frequently here, however, so don't expect one set sound, or song structure, throughout. Highly recommended, fantastic album.

BoySetsFire recently broke up, but this album shows no signs of a band ready to end. It is fiery and emotional, with lead singer Nathan Gray writing political lyrics he truly believes; it is conveyed through his voice. Although their previous albums were more punk/post-hardcore oriented, this album's best songs lie in midtempo hard rock. Requiem and Empire both sound like the best singles the radio could possibly muster, with excellent guitar harmonies and interplay with great, climatic choruses. They still stick to their roots with songs like Final Communique and So Long...and Thanks for the Crutches.

It's a real shame that these guys have called it quits. Although this is their last album they went out with quite a bang. This is political post hardcore at its best. Many different styles of modern rock are integrated from straight up hardcore to pop punk to even ska-core elements in the mix. Straight up inspiring lyrics and vocals also add a really nice touch to the album. R.I.P. Boysetsfire

A new direction for BoySetsFire (and as we now all know, the final for the band...). Much more melodic vocals here, some new experiments. We have a ska like song, some nice acoustic passages and so on. A really great comeback after "tomorrow come today". Too sad the band decided not to walk the road further and split up. =(
