Much like their US cousins Periphery. Tesseract's debut One has been in the making/hyped for quite a few years now. The band sucessfully take a large mix bag of influences and compile it into a cohesive sound and mood that carries through the album. Ranging from (the obvious) Meshuggah-lite grooves to the (intriguing) ambient jamy parts reminiscent of the Deftones and even Radiohead. Drummer Jay Postones is an intrinsic player that grooves well but also throws in some nifty curve-ball drum fills. Ultimately, your judgment on the band will be based upon vocalist Dan Tompkins, who is nothing short of exceptional. Like Chino Moreno, Thom Yorke, and even Jonsi: Dan capitalizes on singing sweet elongated notes moving up and down slowly between the grooving musicians (also throws in a good number of good screams as well). Which leads to the question if this was worth the hype/wait. And without a doubt, an unequivocal yes can be exclaim, concluding that One could very well be metal album of the year for 2011.

That other 2010s djuggernaut debut album is pretty good. Not mindblowing, but they fill the void between Periphery and Meshuggah: djentier (and less annoying) than the former and more melodic than the latter. The vocals aren't too bad but aren't amazing either, and the album offers some subtleties here and there that fortunately allow the whole lot to not be a suite of chugga-chugga dexterity. Not really my cuppa, but a quite strong non-Meshuggah djent release.

Haunting in parts, beautiful in others, crushing in the rest, One is a fantastic example of TesseracT's musicianship from front to back. It's just jarring to have the Concealing Fate movement sandwiched in between other songs

I want to like this more than I do. But the vocals come off half part generic metalcore, half part annoying emo. And the djent is kind of cool, but a bit excessive. Some pretty emotive and nice sounding stuff keeps me invested at times though...

A pretty solid debut from a djent band with ambient inclinations. These guys aren't as poppy or groovy as Periphery, but they're more contemplative and ethereal. If you dig that kind of stuff.

Quite possibly the best "djent" release in the past decade. Apart from Periphery, there aren't many bands doing this. While Periphery has a very mechanical sound, TesseracT has an organic, more natural feel. The band chooses to embrace emotion rather than technicality and guitar shredding. The songs flow effortlessly and come across much less complex than they actually are. There's always an ambient underlying that sort of glues everything together in spectacular fashion. My only gripe is that they included the entire ep that was released shortly before. I would've liked all new material. The other 5 songs are fantastic though, and Eden is probably their best track. Check this out if you're into bands like Periphery, Monuments, Cloudkicker.
