Death Magnetic b-sides that sound exactly like Death Magnetic b-sides.

Beyond Magnetic is Lulu damage control, an EP of b-sides from the Death Magnetic sessions. All of these songs are better than literally any random second of Lulu, which says exactly nothing, but when these songs are arguably just as good if not better than the majority of the album it was culled from, it's not a terrible start to redeeming their horribly self-maligned reputation amongst their fans (and, likely, the entire music-loving world at this point). The b-sides seem to meld their Load and Death Magnetic sides much more comfortably and naturally than Metallica forcing themselves to re-package MOP riffs yet again, and should be the musical direction this band follows in the future. Too bad these are four years old and less than a month ago the same band released Lulu.

It's clear why these didn't make the DM cut. The tunes suffer from awkward transitions and occasionally laughable lyrics. Still, it has its moments and there's some enjoyable riffage, barely keeping Beyond Magnetic above a 2.5.

I wish they put these on the album. I would never say no to a longer 'Tallica album. There is a good tunes here. Four ass-kicking songs and we have it with a good design of classic logo. Oh, I'm so fucking glad!

Great little EP, just what they needed after the absolutely abominable Lulu. Hate Train is mostly my least favorite, but the crunchy as hell freaking riff at about five minutes is gold. Just a Bullet Away is already a very good midpaced stomper, but the melodic section in the middle seals it as better than many of Death Magnetic's weaker tracks. Hell and Back is overall reminiscent of a Black Album song at first, until they speed things up a bit. Again pretty good, but it's held back just a bit by a certain very lame and uninspired riff (You'll know what I mean if you've listened to it) that thankfully isn't featured much. Rebel of Babylon is the best song here, and is up with All Nightmare Long as some of Metallica's best material since 1991 (or perhaps even 1988). This 8 minute epic has it all, featuring a melodic intro, a super memorable refrain, parts to thrash to, parts to mosh to (think back to the heavier section in Hate Train), and even a moment where Lars shows off better drumming than he's exactly known for. How didn't this one make it onto Death Magnetic? Beyond Magnetic is overall a collection of one decent track, two great tracks, and one mega killer one that helped wash down the bitter taste Lulu left.

While this one will still leave most fans pining for the long lost days of Metallica, this EP is a pretty decent entry in the new era discography of the band. The tracks try their best to harken back to the band's thrash metal roots, and actually does a decent job meshing with the bands evolved sound. If anything, the EP should instill a little more hope in the struggling Metallica fan.

This is good at best. Sad that in today's metal landscape where bands like Rosetta, Intronaut, and Vektor continue to push the boundaries of metal this is the best that Metallica can come up. Time to hang it up guys. You had a good run.

Almost as if to minimize the damage from the preposterous Lulu, Metallica releases a short collection of leftovers from the Death Magnetic sessions, appeasing their ever-hungry fans' cries for thrashier material. The EP shares several of the album's flaws - namely, subpar production, predictable drumming and a distinct lack of spontaneity. While nothing in here is revolutionary for the band (in fact, "Hate Train" has a main riff very reminiscent of "Fuel" from ReLoad), the highlight Just a Bullet Away, which features a Hetfield solo, is a beacon of hope for future Metallica releases.

following Lulu, somebody in metallica's camp felt the band's legacy slipping away... knee-jerk reaction: let's get the ol' metallibrand out there again with a crappy b-sides EP, filled with crappy b-sides that are just louder, not better.
