ADRENALIZE is a perfect example of everything I came to despise about Def Leppard. By 1992, they'd become a bit too comfortable within the cozy pop-metal niche they began constructing with PYROMANIA. They'd replaced the angst filled hard rock riffing of their first two records with drum machines and big choruses that aimed to be stadium rock sing-a-longs. It has always made me nauseous just reading the song titles for this album. Def Leppard was now pandering almost exclusively to their female audience and had emasculated themselves in the process. Even if you do actually like this sort of thing, their songwriting is too obviously based on the same formula they used on HYSTERIA, yet the songs are mostly second or third rate. Flawlessly executed tripe. I would rather listen to any other Def Leppard than THIS one.

This may have been recorded in 1992, but the feeling you get makes you think it's still mid 80s. Def Leppard remain true to the style that made them the glam stars they once were. Classics such as "Let's Get Rocked", "Make Love Like a Man", "Have You Ever Needed Someone" as well as the often unnoticed "Stand Up" and "Tonight".

Back in the early 90's, grunge killed almost all hard rock, hair metal or glam bands. The Seattle explosion (extreme overrated IMO) didn't help Leppard's Adrenalize to reach the success of the previous two records. And let's face it...this record has some cool songs like Let's Get Rocked, Make Love Like A Man or Tonight but not enough to fulfil the expectations.

Despite the many sonic similarities to Hysteria, Adrenalize is another fun Def Leppard release, albeit more generic. The album has plenty of radio ready songs, including "Let's Get Rocked", "Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion)", and "Have You Ever Needed Someone So bad", and actually yielded a total of six singles. "Make Love Like a Man" is the album's clear gem. Adrenalize is a great pickup for anyone looking for Def Leppard's essential albums, as Adrenalize marked the end of Def Leppard's mainstream popularity.
