Sentenced North from Here
On North from Here, Sentenced take melodic death, technical death and even black metal and wrap it all up into a neat package that's comprised of a frenzied plethora of technical riffs, raspy vocals and constantly changing song structures. The dark atmosphere only helps to bring it all together, making for quite the cold yet excellent experience and an early masterpiece of melodic death metal.

One of the more overlooked bands of their time, Brimstone take a unique approach to power metal by opting for harsh vocals instead of the cleans usually found in the genre. This is power metal with an edge, well worth checking out for any power metal fan looking for something different.

Dead Blue Sky Symptoms of an Unwanted Emotion
Perhaps some of the most interesting melodic metalcore I've had the pleasure of hearing. Dead Blue Sky take the metalcore formula, strip it down a bit, add in some melodic death/black along with some symphonic elements and wrap it all up in a hazy, atmospheric production and melancholic mood to go along with At the Gates-inspired riffs and keys.

Superb Gothenburg melodeath that heavily emphasizes the genre's traditional heavy metal characteristics, Judas Priest in particular being a big influence on the riffs here. An overlooked gem that's a must for fans of the genre.

Evanescent Soul Observatory from Tyrannical Ages
A fairly obscure gem blending progressive melodic black/death with symphonic and gothic elements. Highly recommended.
Exodus Bonded by Blood
Fall of the Leafe Evanescent, Everfading
Criminally overlooked melodeath/meloback with folk elements that deserves to be heard by more listeners. Fans of Obsequiae in particular should absolutely give this a spin as they have definitely taken some cues from this band's early work. Evanescent, Everfading is truly ever beautiful, everlasting.

An excellent example of early melodeath that seems to have sadly been overlooked, and that's quite a shame. With a variety of excellently crafted dual guitar riffs, solid drumming, passionate, melodic solos and aggressive vocals, Voice of Harmony is an album you don't want to miss out on. At the very least one should give the highlight of the album "Suicide Silence" a peek.

Recorded in 1994, but unfortunately never seeing the light of day until 2011 and finally getting an official album release in 2016. This is a lost gem of the golden age of melodic black/death metal, sounding akin to the classic mid-90's melodeath style as much as it does to Dissection.

A collection of songs from various Studio Ghibli films performed by a handful of melodeath/metalcore bands (Disarmonia Mundi and Blood Stain Child being the more notable names of the bunch). The concept is certainly interesting, and the music ain't too shabby either. Some covers work out better than others (my personal favorite being Disarmonia Mundi's rendition of "Kimi wo Nosete" from Castle in the Sky) and it works better in smaller doses, but for the concept alone, it's definitely worth at least a curious peek.

Also, if you ever wanted to hear a melodeath cover of "Take Me Home, Country Roads", this album has it. It's just fun.

While not quite as polished as 11 Dreams, it's still a great transitional album that bridges the gap between the two rather nicely.

Ebony Tears Handful of Nothing
If their first album felt derivative at times, Ebony Tears decide to go full on Slaughter-era At the Gates here, right down to the similar vocals. Not a bad album, but loses a lot of the more interesting stuff from their debut.
Edge of Sanity Infernal
Edguy Kingdom of Madness
Enforsaken The Forever Endeavor
Ensiferum From Afar
Enter My Silence Remotecontrolled Scythe
Solid Finnish Gothenburg-styled melodeath, nothing more, nothing less. There isn't anything here that reinvents the wheel in particular for those not already well-acquainted with the genre, but melodeath fans are sure to find a good time here with its accessible production and solid riffs.

Imaginary Flying Machines Princess Ghibli II
Mostly more of the same from the first Princess Ghibli compilation, with some slight differences. Just about every band from Princess Ghibli I returns along with two new bands in Rise to Fall and The Stranded (although The Stranded being new is a bit of a stretch considering it's just a Disarmonia Mundi side project). There's also more of an electronic influence here that's not limited to Blood Stain Child being on the album, which can be hit or miss for some. And lastly, there doesn't seem to be as many highs as on the previous compilation, but there's still a decent cover here and there. Overall, it's only really worth it if you liked the first Princess Ghibli.
Insomnium One for Sorrow
Iron Maiden Fear of the Dark
Iron Maiden Dance of Death
Iron Maiden The Final Frontier
Iron Maiden Senjutsu
Judas Priest Killing Machine
Judas Priest British Steel
Judas Priest Rocka Rolla
Kamelot Siege Perilous
Siege Perilous, Kamelot's first outing with renowned vocalist Roy Khan, is perhaps the best of Kamelot's first efforts, however, it's bogged down by weaker songwriting than later albums and a less than stellar production that doesn't really use Khan's voice to the fullest. Regardless, it's still an album worth looking into to see how Khan got his start with the band, and how much he and the rest of Kamelot would improve from here.
Killswitch Engage As Daylight Dies
Killswitch Engage The End of Heartache
Killswitch Engage Disarm the Descent
Kvaen The Great Below
Leukemia Grey-Flannel Souled
A very strange album, in that it just might be the earliest example of melodic metalcore, seemingly created unintentionally by an obscure Swedish death metal band. What is displayed here isn't really too notable aside from that fact, but it is quite the interesting album regardless.
Lord Belial Kiss the Goat
Lothlorien The Primal Event
Symphonic-tinged Gothenburg style melodeath, Lothlorien's The Primal Event features synths aplenty and guitar leads that wouldn't be out of place on an early In Flames album. While the drums could use a bit more impact and the symphonic elements can be a bit too much sometimes, The Primal Event is still a decent, overlooked album.

Unfortunately, the chance to see if they would improve would be lost as their debut would also be their last.
Megadeth Youthanasia
Megadeth Cryptic Writings
Megadeth The System Has Failed
Megadeth United Abominations
Megadeth Dystopia
Mercenary First Breath
Mercenary's first outing is certainly an interesting start, unlike their next few albums that have a mixture of melodeath and power metal, this one's mostly pure melodeath. It's a fairly decent start, just don't expect anything like their other stuff.
Ministry The Last Sucker
Mnemic The Audio Injected Soul
Moaning Wind Visions In Fire
While not being particularly innovative, Visions In Fire is still a worthwhile listen for those looking for more melancholic Gothenburg-styled melodeath.

Unmoored Kingdoms of Greed
With their second outing, Unmoored thankfully ditch the groove metal-tinged melodeath of Cimmerian and opt for straightforward death metal with elements of not only melodeath but also prog. While not quite reaching the highs of their classic Indefinite Soul-Extension, Kingdoms of Greed offers a glimpse into the bright future that the band would eventually attain.

Evanescent Soul change their style to straightforward, generic death metal, losing most of what initially made them interesting. Avoid and stick with their first album instead.
Fatal Embrace (SWE) Manifestum Infernalis
... huh. Fatal Embrace pull a Eucharist and return decades later with a shift in style from melodic death to melodic black metal (even the time frames between albums are both very similar too, with both bands' last albums being released in 1997 and their newer ones releasing one year apart in 2022/23, interesting). Unfortunately, much like the new Eucharist album, while there are still some decent riffs to be found, overall it doesn't really have much staying power. At least it's shorter.
