06.08.21 | Ten will always be 1.
Contender for greatest album of all time. Especially for our generation doof. |
fogza
06.08.21 | "Contender for greatest album of all time."
I thought so at the time but over the years my enthusiasm has diminished greatly |

06.08.21 | zak - never liked 'Ten' too much at the time, found it a bit 'big anthem' glossy - preferred 'Nevermind', 'Angel Dust' and 'Dirt' back then at school. I've actually grown to like it more over recent years, and the documentary was amazing.
'Vitalogy' was always the big one for me - 'Immortality', 'Corduroy', 'Not For You', 'Nothingman'. Really underrated, the band sounding more raw/punk and less 'stadium' suits them I think, but I get the appeal of 'Ten'.
At the time 'Yield' was a big album for me too |
fogza
06.08.21 | I still think Yield sounds the most comfortable record they've made, like it suits them. Like this was what they were supposed to sound like all along. |
zakalwe
06.08.21 | When Vitalogy came out I loved it but the whole ‘scene’ was on the wane.
Kurt had blown his head off and everything was jaded.
Things were moving forward. Dance music, Blur and Oasis. Good times.
I’ll still take Ten over the lot. |
DoofDoof
06.08.21 | yeah, 'Vitalogy' is a reaction to everything turning to sh't - 'Immortality' and 'Corduroy' really take that jaded/embittered/frustrated feel and craft the band's best songs around that.
Still find it a surprising/interesting one - not exactly a party disc though |
DoofDoof
06.08.21 | 'Yield's appeal just fades - it's a neat and tidy album, very 'mature', pays it's dues to classic rock like Zeppelin...but at the final count it just sounds steady and a little boring after a while
I loved it at the time though
'No Code' is similarly mature but actually packs the more knotty songs and has the greater longevity I think |
zakalwe
06.08.21 | I bought Given to Fly on single when it came out ‘for old times sake’
One of the bands best tunes.

06.08.21 | 'Indifference' has a great atmosphere, ultimate '90s |
fogza
06.08.21 | Funny, I'm jamming 'Yield' now because of this list (I never put on PJ anymore), and it's just such a great record, like Vedder doesn't sound like he's wearing a form of angst that's a little forced, and the band sounds like they're just in this sweet space, reigning in themselves but playing to their strengths. I know what you're saying though, I guess it's not a very inventive album. |
DoofDoof
06.08.21 | fogza - 100% PJ became more comfortable in their skins, I do feel they were just releasing stuff for themselves by 'Yield'...but close to 'Rolling Stones syndrome', a little auto pilot and laidback. Almost spiritually zen. The fire was out, more a happy touring band with 7 figure bank accounts. |

06.08.21 | Loved Ten, was very pleased with Vs.
Struggled to like Vitalogy
Never heard the rest |
Muzz79
06.08.21 | Off He Goes is def a top 10 PJ song |
fogza
06.08.21 | Yeah doof, I guess that's fair, I never felt PJ were 100% right for the scene they were in though. I liked that midpoint moment, but they did slide into mediocrity after it. |
DoofDoof
06.08.21 | fogza, I think PJ had the scene baggage foisted upon them - the Seattle 'grunge' bands all sound quite different tbh.
Soundgarden and PJ more classic rock inspired, Nirvana and Mudhoney more punk/Pixies inspired, AIC soon aligned more towards the metal community - then you have band like STP who were clearly copyists to some degree before also becoming effectively a classic hard rock act.
The documentary did make it clear it was a true scene and that was less about a load of bands all sounding like each other but just an energy of a lot of good bands appearing all at once who all knew each other. |
fogza
06.08.21 | Yeah totally, I mean I always knew the bands were all very different musically. I never really got it at the time, but something about Eddie at times seemed awkward when he was trying to channel the disaffected, dark atmosphere of the scene though. |

06.08.21 | Bono on downers |
