Emo Classics Review Series Recap

To briefly recap the Emo classic reviews series that I had penned for this month and a half, as I find some of you noted the length issues of some of my reviews, I decided to make the list of the albums I reviewed in this series, with a brief description of pros and cons of these albums, and give them a score with the 0.1 intervals. Please note: the pros and cons that I wrote are based on the description that I wrote in the full-length reviews in the series, and the scores that I gave are based on the scores in the full-lengths reviews, as I could only give scores with the 0.5 intervals in the reviews. If you want to know I gave such comments, please feel free to have a look of my full-length reviews of these albums. Moreover, I arranged them according to the episodes in the series, NOT ACCORDING TO THE SCORES. Still, feel free to give constructive criticisms.
1My Chemical Romance
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

Pros:
-The lyrics are generally visceral, which is complemented by the dramatic singing and the thrashing instrumentations.
-The band can maintain the consistent darkly thrashing sound and the catchy pop hooks throughout the whole album, resulting the whole album fun to listen to.
Cons:
-The lyrics and singings can be quite melodramatic, morbid and silly at times.
-Since the band maintains the consistent sound, the album also suffers from redundancy in terms of sound.
-I bet many casual listeners won’t realise this is actually a semi-concept album, not to mention the concept itself in the song is quite confounding and fractured.

2Jimmy Eat World
Bleed American

Pros:
-The themes of the lyrics are very relatable for many: from falling in love, romantic bitterness to being a wallflower and depression. Not to mention they are described in a very sharp accuracy.
-The instrumentations are diverse as well: from acoustic ballads to punk-pop bursts and arena-rock anthems.
-This album is jam-packed with pop hooks, which makes it very easy to listen.
Cons:
-Some of these pop hooks came from redundant lyrics, which unfortunately plagued several songs.
-Some songs even repeat the verses, which makes the band don't have any better lyrics.
Score: 4.7/5

The Used

Pros:
-It accentuates every essence in the Emo genre, from pop sensibility, hard rock tendencies to vulnerability, bitterness, nihilism and a hint of melodrama.
-The instrumentations are ranged from string-laden haunting to fiery and engaging, which makes the whole album very interesting to listen to.
-There are also some relatable lyrical themes as well, from isolation, poverty to depression, toxic romantic relationship.
Cons:
-The lyrics can be quite morbid enough to raise eyebrows, and the screaming vocals is scary enough to be a put-off some casual listeners.
-The lyrical material is quite redundant actually, as there are several songs that is related to drugs or referenced about them.
-The actual lyrics itself also suffers from redundancy, as well as the song structure of some songs are quite fractured.

4Brand New
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me

Pros:
-The lyrics are very clever to say the least, as it turns some rather obscure themes such as religion (“Jesus Christ”) and premature death (“Limousine”) into accessible songs.
-Speaking lyrical themes, they are superbly deep and broad-ranged, not only there are the obscure ones, but there are more relatable ones such as isolation, breakups, diminished friendships and alcoholisms.
-The dark, stormy instrumentations are also excellent as well, as they perfectly match with the moody lyrics.
Cons:
-The actual lyrics can be a bit too pessimistic and melodramatic at times.
-The lyrical themes are a bit too obscure at times that some listeners may not relate to.

Riot!

Pros:
-This actual lyrics are new-found, deadly-witted feminine, a rarity in the Emo genre, yet it’s still universal and broad, from themes such as breakups, fame to romantic dramas.
-It boasts the generally refined and deep songwriting.
-The album still boasts the fierce, JEW-like punk-pop spirit and hooks, which is enough to attract many casual listeners.
Cons:
-The lyrics referenced to Christianity numerous times that I feel like the band is being a bit too preachy.
-The album in general is a bit too reliant on choruses.

Tell All Your Friends

Pros:
-The production and sound of this album remained consistently punk-edged, without falling into the mistake of redundancy.
-The band weaves highly relatable themes with a clever songwriting, and makes the songs as great sing-alongs, and cementing them as features of the Emo genre itself.
Cons:
-The vocals can be a bit atonal at times.(Which is reasonable as the two vocalists had just begun ironing vocals at the time.)
-The lyrical themes is a bit unoriginal, as many predecessors already used similar themes in the album.

Pros:
-The lyrical themes are broad and on point, as it describes various themes, ranging from the relatable ones to the political ones, in a visceral, thought-provoking way.
-The stormier instrumentations showcased a darker side of Emo, showing there’s more than just sing-along diaries in the genre.
Cons:
-The album generally lacked the pop hooks like many peers had.
-Some songs are quite fragmented in terms of structure, as they don’t seem to follow the typical pop song structure, which makes the album not as memorable as most peers do.

The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most

Pros:
-The lyrical wizardry are honestly lacerating to sculpture the sadness of a breakup and other issues such as isolation and drug addiction.
-The production of this album really fits the lyrics as well, giving the acoustic guitar-led sound a beautiful edge.
Cons:
-The lyrics can be cheesy at times, which can be cringe-worthy for some listeners.
-The lyrical theme is very narrow, as all the songs, bar the title track and “This Bitter Pill”, are about romantic bitterness.
Score: 3.9/5
9Saves the Day
Stay What You Are

Pros:
-The album is both deep and broad in terms of lyrical themes, plus the poignant, superb songwriting in the album, they turn both relatable and more macabre themes into accessible sing-alongs.
-The boyish, honeyed vocals really complements the juvenile lyrics very well.
Cons:
-It lacks the explosive pop hooks that many peers have.
Score: 4.3/5

The Artist in the Ambulance

Pros:
-The lyrical theme in the album can be ranged from interpersonal relationship, self-reflection to self-loathing and fierce political statement.
-The brilliant songwriting in the album also flourished the depth of the album.
-The band showcased their amazing technical prowess, which make the whole album sounds consistent.
Cons:
-The album can sound redundant at times.
