02.14.16 | I ordered a pair of M40x's recently since, from what I read, the benefits of the m50 over the m40 didn't really seem to justify the difference in price. Still waiting for them to get here though so unfortunately I can't provide any feedback on them yet |

02.14.16 | Skip the M50's tbh. Things are overhyped to shit and your assumption is entirely correct, they are made for monitoring and not for joyful listening. Things are accurate as hell but the bass is quite boomy and the soundstage is non existent making them the furthest thing from immersive. For the Beyer's make sure you choose the model with the correct impedance for your equipment. If you don't have an stronger amp, you stuck with the 32 Ohm model.
If you honestly want my advice go for the Phillips SHP9500. they are probably the best open back pair of cans that go for below 200 USD. Best thing about them is that they are not even 80 on Amazon. Pair it up with a Fiio K1 DAC (40 bucks) and you're gonna be in heaven |

02.14.16 | "they got the best price and quality"
Not all the time. the 598's I think are a little overpriced and everything else below that is solid overall. Nothing amazing at all however. Once you get into the HD 600 and 650's thats where most people who love Sennheiser have their praise coming from. |
Buccaneer
02.14.16 | Looking into the SHP9500, and tbh it is winning me over. Looks exactly what I'm after. A few questions though. The Fiio K1 DAC, can I use this on-the-go with an iPod or is it strictly for laptops/PCs? The one on Amazon is the USB one, is that what you're referring to? If it is meant to be plugged into a USB port, which budget headphone amp do you reccomend for on-the-go music listening?
Also, with regards to the Beyerdynamics, I was looking into getting the 80 Ohm model, as I am planning on getting some synth equipment/software at some point this year and thought the 80 Ohms would be a good middle ground for music listening and monitoring. The m40x look nice as well, but again, correct me if I'm wrong, it seems geared solely towards monitoring.
Appreciate all the help btw fellas, considering audio equipment can be so daunting sometimes. |

02.14.16 | I got M2's as well (they're my go to travel cans). While they are spectacular, I think the Philips outdoes it every category save for portability.
The K1 actually has a built in amp as well so it could drive fairly thirsty cans pretty decently. If you wanna dip a little deep you could go for the Micca DAC/AMP. Thing more than the SHP's but they can pretty much power everything but the most demanding Planars or shit like the HD 800's |

02.14.16 | My M40x's are scheduled to arrive Tuesday so I can come and give some thoughts then if I remember.
Right now I'm still using my Klipsch Image over ear that I bought refurbished 5 years ago and are just starting to show signs of leaving me (ie they still work fine 98% of the time). I've enjoyed them overall although they're kind of strong on the bass which is one of the reasons the "neutrality" of the m40x's appealed to me (I figure it's easier to EQ neutral phones than it is on phones with too much bass/treble/whatever). |
Titan
02.14.16 | i'd recommend the sennheiser momentums, especially due to the genre's of music you listen to.....you can get the 1.0's for about $175.....the 2.0's that smaugman mentioned will run you about $300......virtually the same specs, a tad more comfy |

02.14.16 | seems like we have v similar taste, check Kimbra - Vows |

02.14.16 | m40x has flat frequency range while M50x has a boost on low frequencies. That was the reason why I grabbed m40x because I wanted more accuracy of the actual mix. For such price it's the best thing ever. |
Buccaneer
02.14.16 | The Momentums 1.0 look pretty great as well. Goddamnit, it's going to be a ball-ache picking one now. Right now, I'm torn between the SHP9500, Momentum 1.0 and the Beyerdynamic. The M40x sounds pretty good as well.
Tempest, she sounds interesting, will check her out. Cheers! |

02.14.16 | yeah i got the momentums they are great. would rec |
Titan
02.14.16 | keep in mind that the 1.0's were known to be a little uncomfortable after listening for extended periods of time....this was the main reason that they started making the 2.0's.....i have the 1.0's and haven't experienced any discomfort.....i don't have a big head which could be the reason.....could've been a manufacturing defect as well but i highly doubt a company such as sennheiser would allow them to get through production....they do sound amazing |

02.14.16 | ^^ this i have a small head so the 1.0 are no problem but if your head is bigger i wouldnt rec em |

02.14.16 | Having owned a pair of M50s and 40s, I want to point out that neither of them are particularly comfortable. They clamp quite a bit out of the box, and they're both short on the padding for the headband. They loosen up over time, but they still aren't all that great. My M40x were more balanced, but the M50s were far more engaging with most kinds of music. Saying all that, I replaced them with a pair of Sennheiser 558s and never looked back. They're more laid back as far as sound goes, but they provide solid separation for their price. A major plus is how comfortable they are. I forget I have them on all the time. |

02.14.16 | Not sure open headphones are really what he's looking for though seeing as he's talking about plugging them into his iPod on the go |

02.14.16 | I mean he's considering the SHP9500s and they're open, but yeah open wouldn't make sense for that at all. Figured I'd throw in my two cents. |
SCREAM!
02.14.16 | Didn't realise those were open as I don't really know Phillips but yeah, it's an important detail to mention. I know when I first started looking at headphones, I didn't even know about open ones and would've been pretty upset if I accidentally forked up a bunch of cash for something I couldn't use for the purpose I wanted them for. |

If he needs to go closed i'd say go Takstar Pro80's or if you want to dig a little deeper go for the original Momentums. However, the new model is leagues ahead in comfort and the sound difference is slight but noticeable
EDIT: yeah go MSR7. Things are supposedly awesome |

bowlofsoup
02.14.16 | Yeah, I wouldn't take the 558s out that's for sure. You could always give these a try. They're pretty solid all around, and ususally fall quite a bit under your range. Not sure they'd do well for production, but they're really nice for casual listening

edit: Also throwing in my vote for those msr7s. They solved the comfort problem I had with the M50s, and they sound great. I may have a problem. |

02.14.16 | i'll swear to you guys that i had a $10 pair of sony on ear headphones that i found in a box of old, obsolete computer equipment at my job.....they sounded fucking amazing......guessing they were from the early 90's or so......actually had a volume 'dial' on the cord |
Buccaneer
02.14.16 | Sorry guys, I guess I was a bit misleading when I mentioned 'on-the-go'. Most of the time, I'm listening to music at the desk or chilling on the bed with the iPod. Wearing cans whilst leaving the house is something I'd like to do, but I tend to use in ear phones for that. That said, I prefer over the ear phones for comfort. So all the recs so far have been pretty solid. |

similar story here, i still use them. they're about to die, but i've had them for like 6 years now, so my whole musical journey has been with these headphones so they're very important to me. Don't know what I'll do when they die, so i'll just bookmark this thread and see what i can do lol |

02.14.16 | open back, all the way. if u don't listen music in noisy places, why not! |
Buccaneer
02.14.16 | The SR80e look really good for the price. The cheapest I've seen so far. Yeah, I'm leaning towards open phones now. Appears that closed phones muddy the sound a bit which makes sense. No need to start that debate here anyways! Knowing me, I'll end up picking up a second pair of phones just for commutes and travelling.
Man, no wonder people can get so obsessive over this sorta thing. |

Buccaneer
02.14.16 | Yeah, I haven't dismissed the 558s. They look super comfortable. Havent looked at ebay yet, but they're quite a bit more expensive than the SR80e on amazon. But not far from my budget so I dont mind. I'm just thinking, once I get into monitoring (whenever it happens), will they do the trick?
I guess that's my problem, I'm trying to find a pair of phones that is the best of both worlds for cheap, which I realise as I'm typing it out is completely ludicrous. |
bowlofsoup
02.14.16 | I agree with smaugman. I had a pair of SR60s for a while, but I could only wear them for an hour before having to take them off. I'm not entirely a fan of the Grado signature to begin with. They're entirely too bright for my tastes. I would really recommend what Titan said to do and try and listen to some of these before you buy one. |
Buccaneer
02.14.16 | It is a great suggestion, but it means locating stores that have these headsets first, which is the problem. Not a big problem, so I'll look into it |

02.15.16 | I'm currently wearing ATH M50's, and they sound really great for the price.
Balanced sound, dynamic, good enough contrast of frequencies.
*when I say good enough, I mean that it won't show flaws until you go beyond 320 kbs or, perhaps, FLAC, and that's just audiosnob territory imo
They are also comfortable for shorter periods of time - although they might feel a bit heavy and bulky after a while -, and feel sturdy enough.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. |

02.15.16 | Oh, one free unsolicited advice: buy headphones/earphones/speakers/whatever that fit your lifestyle (I totally fucked up in that aspect).
As an example, if you spend quite a bit of time working out, walking around, etc, I wouldn't recommend overhead headphones as your main pair, unless you have the budget for two or more pairs. |
Masochist
02.15.16 | Be careful with open backs. Don't forget that their major disadvantage is that they leak 100% of their sound--everyone will be able to hear your music, and you'll be able to hear everyone else. If you're going to be "on the go" in public places, keep that in mind. |
SCREAM!
02.15.16 | "As an example, if you spend quite a bit of time working out, walking around, etc, I wouldn't recommend overhead headphones as your main pair, unless you have the budget for two or more pairs."
I agree for working out but I've never had issues with wearing over-ear headphones while walking around. Over-ear generally get better sound quality as far as I know so I'd def recommend getting those if possible even if it means buying a cheaper pair of earbuds for stuff like working out. |
Buccaneer
02.15.16 | Yeah, cheers for the advice. I probably should not have mentioned 'on-the-go' in the list description, as realistically, I'm probably only going to use these indoors in front of a laptop or just chilling/lounging around the house. Also thought about messing around with a DAW once I've upgraded my laptop so again, I'll be indoors. I'll stick with in-ear phones when I'm out in public.
And I'm looking into each headphone recommended so far, and I have to say, it's a toss up between the SHP9500 and the HD558s. Every review for the SHP9500 I've read or watched has people going nuts over it. Shame the price seems to have rocketed, but it's still very affordable. The HD558s look comfy as fuck, but I've read there's bass bleed, particularly the mids.
There's actually a Bose store in my town, paid them a visit and almost made a comical 180 when I saw the price tags! |
Titan

02.15.16 | That's me trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about but all I'm doing is regurgitating what I've read elsewhere.
Just from the reviews I've read online. Still strongly considering them though. Being able to listen to music for long periods with no fatigue is really appealing to me |

02.16.16 | M40X's came in a day early. They're definitely very crisp and give a super clear sound. Having gone from bass-heavy headphones to these though, they do sound a little less engaging and could use a little extra oomph. Considering I got them for under 100$CAD though I'm def not disappointed and I'll give them some more time to grow on me as I adjust to their style.
As for comfort, I wore them for about an hour on my morning commute and they got a little warm but nothing excessive. |
SCREAM!
02.16.16 | That being said, since open-headphones seem to be fine for you, then you'll probably get better sound quality out of those. The M40Xs are great for on the go (which is what I wanted) but the open ones will be even better sounding I'm sure. |
