I originally had this at a 5, then I put it at a 4.5, but now it's going back to a 5 after I re-listened to it and remembered how fucking good it is. Last two tracks are so draining. In a good way! That second album can't come soon enough.

Pretty well everything on here is at least very, very good, but Uncle Remus and Stink-Foot are basically among the finest recordings in the history of music, so naturally everything else preceding that stunning double-whammy finisher kinda pales in comparison. But it's all great.

I definitely feel like this is supremely underrated, probably only because of Valley Girl (which I honestly really dig). Some of Frank's catchiest ditties here, not to mention the instrumental insanity of the title track, which is intricate even by his standards. Superb!

Disregard the other reviewer. These are not B-sides as they have been issued on an EP. End of. This is a great little record though, punchy and short but still varied and interesting. Maybe doesn't quite live up to Repeater but it's hardly a let down in comparison either.

As the kids say: "this is underrated AF". Basically as good as anything they ever did, it's just a little too long, and even then there's no obvious duds you'd cut out, it's all Pretty much A-grade material and it's much better than, say, A Moon Shaped Pool, just as a for instance.

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band Mirror Man
The best of this is absolutely mind-blowingly good. The worst of it is still pretty great, but maybe a little too consistent, to put it diplomatically. Still, this just keeps getting better every damned time I listen to it.
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band The Spotlight Kid
This, like all of the Captain's records, is a massive grower, the difference is that because this one is much more straightforward (almost normal!) you assume it won't be. But it really, really is.

This doesn't really all hang together as a "coherent whole" or anything like that (which, of
course, if you know anything about the history of this album and the whole Lather project, it
wasn't exactly meant to, at least not like this), and The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary doesn't
quite hold up to repeated listens, but the two instrumental tracks are genuinely amazing, and
Lemme Take You To The Beach is one of the catchiest little ditties Frank ever wrote.

UPDATE 13/04/2018: Hey, whaddayaknow, Greggery Peccary has come back around to being great again.

Fuh You is the worst track on here by a huge goddamn margin (although, to be fair, the bridge is not bad), but everything else is quite good. If that track were excised, and maybe a few others just to give this a bit more punch and shape, this would be a late-era Macca classic.

This has all the makings of a five-star classic until Low Life and Attack come along. They're both good enough songs, but they're fairly uninteresting. And then you've got Fodderstompf to finish the record off with, which I love the idea of but doesn't hold up as well on repeated listens.

Frankly I don't quite get the hate (well...) for this one. I mean sure, musically it's kinda generic, but I find it all to still be pretty damn agreeable, and Billy is a genuinely moving song, although I guess it says something that the best song (by a flying mile) on here is the only one that really sounds like Lou Reed.

There's some genuine stone cold throbbers on here but also a few slightly mediocre tunes, and the whole thing kinda falls victim to nineteen-eighties production values. But it's still good.
Crowded House Temple Of Low Men

I gotta say, this is a pretty lacklustre effort from Good Old Uncle Frankie. Cocaine Decisions and Sex are particularly his mediocre. Very canny move from Alice with the musical direction here, but as many copies as it may have sold that doesn't mean the songs themselves rise too far above mediocrity. It is still good though, just nothing beyond that.

KISS Hot in the Shade
Way way too long, but this is actually much better than I remember. I mean, it's all very cheesy and 1980s (but then what did you expect?), but most of the songs are very solid. Cut this down to an economical 10 tracks and it'd be easily their best record of the decade. Probably the following decade too, actually. Miles better than anything Bon Jovi ever did, that's for sure.

Airbourne No Guts. No Glory.
Alice Cooper Hey Stoopid

Honestly, this is mostly fairly poor gear. Splish Splash is the only one that even remotely makes it, because that's the only one with a bit of oomph to it. Oh well.
Black Spiders Sons of the North
I mean, look, it's good fun and catchy and all that, but this loses several points for lacking originality. And, y'know, it just doesn't really draw you back to it like good records should.
David Bowie Tonight
Dr. Hook Rising
The only times this record ever threatens to take off are the first and last tracks on the B side, which are both somewhere near approaching 'pretty good'. Everything else is unbelievable slushy crap. I'll give a million dollars to anyone who's listened to this whole thing twice through of their own volition.

Three classic songs, a bunch of mediocre at best songs and some loud mastering do not a classic make.
Olivia Newton-John Totally Hot
Phil Collins No Jacket Required
Sussudio is the only good song on here. That gets a 5, everything else gets a 0.
Pond (AUS) Tasmania
This is the sound of a band trying extremely hard to be profound but without being quite original enough thinkers to make it, except perhaps with the lower-echelons of Triple J listeners. Although they certainly know their way around a good chorus.
