Jon Brion Meaningless |
Already a household name in the producing world, (having worked with names such as Kanye West, Fiona Apple and Rufus Wrainwright), as well as doing several critically acclaimed filmscores(Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Magnolia) is it in any wonder that Meaningless is an Indie gem? Also the first release to show Brion as a lead vocalist, which can only leave the listener to wonder as to why that is the case.
Crafty tunes that will make fans of The Beatles and the like rejoice, Meaningless would make it into anyone's top 3 of 2001. |

I've been moving somewhat away from metal recently, but this album sticks out like no other. With its incredible (though programmed) keyboard work, which is both extremely melodic and gives the album an ambiance all of its own. Next to that stands neo-classical influenced guitar which works a lot better rather than mindless shred, and one incredible vocalist. clean singing, screaming, growling, you name it, this guy can do it nearly unmatched.
I'm not a big fan of black metal, but this album has all the ingredients to make for a winning combination. |

Classic Case Losing At Life |
Packed with both pop and post-hardcore overtones, Classic Case delivers a great mainstream rock album that's not really that mainstream. Opener 'Into a Nightmare' is the kind of radio-ready single that most Nickelbacks and Breaking Benjamins could only hope for, with great vocal interplay between the members. The title track is simply a solid pop ballad, while the dark and brooding melodies of 'Vampires' recall 80's post-punk.
The only big downside to the album are the horribly cliche and average lyrics, something the band could put a little more effort into the next time around. |

Converge No Heroes |
With No Heroes, Converge continue their audible onslaught in their own signature style. Guitarist Kurt Ballou and bassist Nate Newton still manage to create some of the most face-melting, slaying riffs heard in extreme music, yet being able to slow down for more moody passages when needed. Ben Koller retains his status as one of the best drummers around -- period. Jacob Bannon however seems to be suffering from a mild writer's block. While his lyrics had been extremely solid on Converge's past two releases, on No Heroes Bannon doesn't seem to be able to channel his anger with the same finesse in his writing as he did before. Let's hope that, after 17 years, Bannon's (and with that, Converge's) fire isn't slowly burning out. |
