Ancestors Of Sound Mind |
I've only listened to this once, but I already want to give it a 5. Holy fuck this is a good album, it is a huge piece of musical art. It would be hard to pinpoint exactly what this album is, but a mixture of Pink Floyd, Stoner Metal, Doom Metal, 70s Psychedelic and post-metal wouldn't even begin to describe the aural bliss this album is.
Potentially one of the best albums, and certainly biggest surprises, of 2009, Ancestor's Of Sound Mind is not an album to miss. |

Godspeed You! Black Emperor John Peel Sessions |
So Godspeed came out of their secret base in Canada where they gather tape recordings of old guys talking about beaches and street sellers talking about the American government to play a radio show hosted by John Peel. They play one 20 minute song of three separate movements, two of which are from Skinny Fists and one is unreleased material called Steve Reich after the composer of the same name. If you don't have a day to spend to listen to Skinny Fists listen to this instead. If you're a die hard Godspeed fan and haven't heard this go find it. If you hate Godspeed, well then I don't care much for your opinion good sir. Anyway, only official Godpseed recording, it's incredible, listen and enjoy. |

Mono One Step More and You Die |
Mono's sophomore release is probably their most overlooked work next to their debut, but this album contains some of Mono's most experimental work to date. Instead of the same monotonous epics found on the later albums, Mono spices it up with tracks like 'A Speeding Car' and my personal favorite Mono track of all time 'Com(?)' (worth getting this album for this track alone.) If you like Mono's newer stuff, I highly recommend you give this record a try. |

This is what the last Pelican album should have been. Red Sparowes have crafted their best
work to date making a record that is atmospheric yet energetic, dark but uplifting, free
flowing and most of all, beautiful. Honestly I have never been impressed with anything Red
Sparowes have done in the past, but the band has managed to blow away the little
expectations I had for this album. If you think The Fire In Our Throats... is a good
album take one listen to this and rethink your decision. |

Rosetta A Determinism of Morality |
Russian Circles Geneva |
WOW!! I wasn't expecting this to be this good. Geneva combines the post-metal abrasiveness of Enter with the calm post-rock atmospherics of Station seamlessly. The first half hits you in the face with pounding heaviness, while the second half grounds you with long progressive compositions. Easily Russian Circles strongest release to date. Pelican will have a lot to compete with this year. |
Sparrows Swarm and Sing Untitled #2 |
Untitled #2 takes note from the big three of post-rock (Mono, DMST, GY!BE), and composes a stunning EP out of those influences. Just under 30 minutes long, the EP hits three crushing climaxes in between somber moments of dark atmosphere. This is the second best post-rock EP next to Slow Riot, 'nuff said. |

Do you like post metal? Haven't heard of East of the Wall, Year of No Light and/or Rosetta? Get this split now. If any of these band's name's are familiar to you then you already know that these guys are on the top of underground post metal. East of The Wall brings a 3 part epic that may be their best song yet. Year of No Light tries out sludge and ends up sounding exactly like Neurosis. Rosetta throws in a cover of The Cure's Homesick, which works incredibly well surprisingly. If you like post-metal or any of these bands make sure to grab this split. |

Easily the best album of 2010 so far. Fang Island debut with a bang on their self titled debut. Huge explosions of math-rock jams without much math to get caught up on become infused with Animal Collective-esque freak folk vocal stylings produce one of the most forward-thinking albums in recent memory. Fang Island is not only a name to look out for, but a band to get used to right now because this has album of the year potential written all over it. |

Looking at the album cover you may expect another female singer song writer. But Marnie Stern is far from the norm. Creating a chaotic blend of math rock a la Hella and Don Caballero, but with more emotion than technical skill, This Is It... proves to be one of the most original and fun listens you will have the pleasure of listening to. |
Maserati Inventions for the New Season |
Probably one of my favorite post-rock release of all time, or at least most listened to (yeah you read that right.) Inventions For The New Season is incredibly addictive. Each of the full songs are about as close to perfection as you can get. The slow building intro 'Inventions' pays off after teasing the listener for what feels like 10 minutes, bursting into a danceable jam. 'Synchronicity IV' and 'Show Me The Season' are both standout tracks that are fast moving and exciting the whole way through their lengthy runtime. Jerry Fuchs' (RIP) drumming is spectacular, and I can easily say he was one of the best drummers in post-rock (and one of the best live drummers I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.) The only thing bringing this album down is a couple of throwaway interludes, however don't let that discourage you from hearing one of the most energetic albums in post-rock. |

Nordic Nomadic is a solo project of a Toronto based musician that creates psychedelic folk music similar to Black Mountain. Pansori Demo 09 |
Pansori are a relatively unknown band that follows along the footsteps of other screamo bands that incorporate post-rock influences into their music. The difference between Pansori and other bands is their ability to do it well. Pansori balance out the chaotic screamo parts with the beautiful post-rock parts perfectly, never favoring one side over the other. Their first demo contains one 19 minute song, eighthundredyearsofsilence that moves between many different parts and never bores. Definitely a must-have for any fan of post-screamo or post-metal enthusiasts. |

Portugal. The Man Waiter: ''You Vultures!'' |
Portugal. The Man It's Complicated Being a Wizard |
Portugal. The Man's weirdest endeavor proves to be one of their best. It's Complicated Being A Wizard is a 23 minute long track that attempts to blend electronic noise with alt/indie rock (sounds like another famous record I recall, Boy B or something like that,) which they do surprisingly well. The track flows well throughout and has a few standout moments. It's a new take on an old formula that isn't seen too often, It's Complicated Being A Wizard is a fun EP that shows a different side of Portugal. |
Portugal. The Man Devil Say I, I Say AIR |
A companion EP to Portugal's debut album Waiter: "You Vultures!" brings two of the best songs off that album and two unreleased songs. For those who stopped listening after Waiter can get their Portugal fix here, as the two unreleased songs are among the band's best work. If you are already a fan of the band then there is no reason for you not to have this. 'The Devil' is a western inspired track, while 'The Pines' is great b-side off the debut. |
Portugal. The Man The Satanic Satanist |
This album started out as a 3 for me, but the more I listened to it the better it got. From the upbeat opener to the slow and somber closer, "The Satanic Satanist" brings 11 tracks filled with emotion. Not quite perfect, but definitely an excellent album that is well worth letting grow on you. |
Portugal. The Man Live At Neumo's |
Portugal. The Man's only official live release gives a great portrayal of what the band brings to the live setting. Portugal is known as one of the best live acts around today, and are often compared to The Mars Volta (just without the hour long jams.) Live at Neumo's was recorded after the release of Church Mouth, and includes the best songs of that album plus 3 more off the debut and Devi I Say EP. The DVD is a must see by any fan of the band or those interested in seeing what Portugal is all about. The audio recording doesn't quite match the quality of the DVD, but is still nice to throw on a portable device. Get it free at ://portugaltheman.cashmusic.org |

If this EP is any indication to what We Were Exploding Away is going to be like, it is going to be one killer release. Okay, serious rating now..... It's no Devil & God thats for sure. Or even Deja

exploring new ideas. Unfortunately, those new ideas don't work very well most of the time.
Highlights would be "Vices" (Screamo Brand New? More of this would've been amazing!), "At
The Bottom" (lead single), and "Noro" (Brand New waving goodbye?). Not the worst record in
their discography, but no where near the best either. |

Say Hello To My Kids Say Hello To My Kids EP |
Say Hello To My Kids are a Belgian post-rock band that pride themselves on their DIY ethic, recording, producing and hand packing each CD themselves. Apart from their hardworking nature, the band makes some pretty great music as well. While the band doesn't stray too far from the post-rock norm, Say Hello do try to bring different elements from the genre that we all know and love. The use of samples and vocals prove to be a worthy addition to the excellent instrumentation. Computerized sequences and electronic noises make appearances on the EP as well. Overall, Say Hello To My Kids are well worth giving a try if you're at all into post-rock, especially those looking for a fresh band that is just breaking onto the scene. Oh, and did I mention the EP is free? |

A promising debut from an up and coming indie band. The album starts out great with the first 3 tracks, but unfortunately drags on in the middle which brings the whole album down. The rhythm section of the band keeps everything tight and groovy, almost dancable. You can't listen to most of the songs without nodding your head and tapping your foot. This is worth checking out if you like female vocals over heavy drum-n-bass music. I will be eagerly awaiting their next release, because I think they can, and will, do better. |

Rishloo Feathergun |
Rishloo have finally broken away from their influences and come into their own. No longer is the band just another Tool ripoff. Those looking for another Eidolon may be disappointed, however Feathergun does many things right. The vocals are still the highlight of the band, and the guitars are still wailing out fuzzy delay drenched riffs, but all in a Rishloo only way. 'Downhill' and 'Feathergun in the Garden of the Sun' are standout tracks on the album, both progressing within themselves and are filled with plenty of surprises. Overall Feathergun is a worthy addition to the Rishloo catalogue, but the band still has a ways to go before they perfect their new found signature sound. |

An interesting blend of indie vocals with math-rock music. Its a good record, but could have been done better. Most of the songs are good but not great, which makes some of them forgettable. Its worth a listen if you're looking for something different, but you won't find yourself loving this album. |
