Where The Decemberists's 2009 full-length fails is not in musical terms, it's in lyrical unimportance and anything that stems from it. The concept is an interesting one, chock-full of cliches (on purpose) but lacking a lot of charisma. Musically, the album is just as formal and tiresome, only made worse by its excessive length. By the end of it all, it becomes clear that the album is just a bunch of uninspired folksy tunes - for who it's watered down, I couldn't tell you. Go ask all the Margarets and the Williams. |
