5.0 classic
Between the Buried and Me Colors
One of the most unique, versatile, beautiful, brutal, albums to have been recorded. The variety of emotion expressed throughout the record makes it quite an experience to behold, complete with perfect production, genre-bending sections, and not a dull moment in sight. Critics might say that it is a jumbled mess, but I'd completely disagree. 'Colors' has influenced me an incredible deal and is truly worthy of a perfect score. Check out: The whole thing.
Devin Townsend Ocean Machine: Biomech
Devin Townsend's first "true" solo album is indeed one of his best. As opposed to his more aggressive Strapping Young Lad stuff, 'Ocean Machine: Biomech' takes a lighter and more heartfelt turn, though it is still heavy in its own right. There is not a bad moment on this album, but the ending is where 'Ocean Machine: Biomech' truly shines. "Bastard" and "The Death of Music" are easily two of the best songs I've heard in my entire life, both melancholic, beautiful, and filled with raw emotion. Check out: The whole thing.
Devin Townsend Project Addicted
'Addicted' is the perfect way to describe this album: once I started listening to it, I couldn't stop. There is not a single dull moment, and every song from the heavy title track to the powerful "Supercrush!" to the beautiful "Ih-Ah!" to the album's epic closer, "Awake!" is spectacular. Anneke's vocals and the album's incredible production are also big pluses, making this one of Devin's best albums yet. Check out: The whole thing.
Devin Townsend Project Ghost
The final album in the Devin Townsend Project, 'Ghost' is probably the best album Devin has made in his entire career. Being a radical departure from his metal roots, the soft, relaxing music of 'Ghost' has raised my spirits on several occasions and will probably never get old. The first half of the album is full of catchy, incredible songs, including the beautiful "Feather", but the second half is also enjoyable to listen to as well. There's just so much to say about this album that you should just listen to it yourself. Check out: The whole thing.
King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King
A progressive rock masterpiece, 'In the Court of the Crimson King' is an album that will be remembered for ages to come. Its influence can be seen in most progressive rock albums that followed it, and few, if any, have reached the highs of this album. Even though the improvisational section at the end of "Moonchild" may not be of much interest, the perfection of songs like "Epitaph" and the album's epic closer, "The Court of the Crimson King" more than make up for this tiny flaw. Check out: The whole thing.
Metallica Master of Puppets
'Master of Puppets', while not my favorite Metallica album, is still worthy of a superb score for both the quality of its music and its influence on heavy metal. Everything from the breathtaking tempos of "Battery" and "Damage Inc." to the epic "Master of Puppets" and "Disposable Heroes" to the incredible "ballad", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", and the instrumental "Orion" is among Metallica's finest work. Many wonder what would have happened to Metallica if Cliff Burton had not passed away, but we do have this record to honor his legacy.
My Bloody Valentine Loveless
Whoa, when I first heard 'Loveless', I couldn't take it seriously at all and wondered why reverybody loved it so much. However, around the third time I listened to it, it seemed to all click. There's something about the fuzzy guitars, the drums, and the atmospheric vocals that I really enjoyed. Who knows? It might become my favorite album.
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
The first time I listened to 'Wish You Were Here', I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it the way everybody else does. Eventually, after one night of listening to it again, I connected emotionally with the music and finally grasped the reason why this album is so great. From the beginning to the end of the epic "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", and the three tracks in between, 'Wish You Were Here' is a perfect album that, over time, resonated with me on a level that very few albums can reach. Check out: The whole thing.
Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd certainly is a band, at least to me, that requires repeated listens to fully appreciate. The same is true with 'The Dark Side of the Moon': I initially criticized this album a fair share after first listening to it. In time, though, this album has grown on me. Even if "On the Run" doesn't stand out, the album flows brilliantly, and "Time", "The Great Gig in the Sky", "Money", and "Us and Them" are some of the greatest songs ever written. Check out: The whole thing.
Radiohead OK Computer
'OK Computer' is certainly worthy of being called the definitive album of the 90's, and one of the best albums of all time. The rich, enthralling atmospheres Radiohead created combined with some of the most memorable songs make this an album to truly remember. While the album flows together incredibly well, tracks such as "Paranoid Android", "Exit Music (For A Film)", "Karma Police", "No Surprises", and my personal favorite, "Let Down" all stand out. Check out: The whole thing.
Rush Moving Pictures
Slowdive Souvlaki
'Souvlaki' is an emotional masterpiece filled with lush soundscapes and dreamy atmospheres combined with incredible songwriting. It flows brilliantly, and nothing seems out of place. It's not limited to one mood either, as it can be very melancholy and depressing or very relaxing and soothing depending on when one listens to it. With brilliant tracks like "Alison", "Machine Gun", "When the Sun Hits", and "Dagger", 'Souvlaki' is an album I'll always come back to. Check out: The whole thing.
Talking Heads Remain in Light
Over the past few months, 'Remain in Light' has grown to become one of my favorite albums of all time. It's just incredible: from the funky grooves of "Born Under Punches" and "Houses in Motion", to the atmospheric and more depressing "Listening Wind" and "The Overload", as well as classic "Once in a Lifetime", 'Remain in Light' never fails to deliver. Not to mention it features superstar guests such as Brain Eno and Adrian Belew as well, both contributing their fair share to this album's brilliance. Check out: The whole thing.
The Beatles Abbey Road
What can I say? It's The Beatles, and it's one of their best albums. I can't find a single flaw, and its influence is evident in almost every other great work of music beyond it. "Come Together", "Something", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "Here Comes the Sun", and "You Never Give Me Your Money" are all classics, and the rest is great as well. If you haven't listened to this, please do so now. Check out: The whole thing.
The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
'Sgt. Pepper's' is the definition of a classic, from its perfect songwriting, track order, production, and influence on the music industry as a whole. Even though some believe that 'Abbey Road' is slightly better, 'Sgt. Pepper's' is an experience you will not forget. From the rocking title track to the epic, "A Day in the Life", it is indeed one of the most, if not the most important album of all time. Check out: The whole thing.
Vangelis Blade Runner Soundtrack
Yes Close to the Edge
One of the greatest progressive rock albums of all time, 'Close to the Edge' is a flawless release that defines Yes's career, as well as progressive rock in general. Gone are the throwaway tracks from 'The Yes Album' and especially 'Fragile', and in are three brilliantly composed epics that do not ever disappoint. Not to mention that the organ section in the middle of "Close to the Edge" gives me chills every time I hear it. Check out: The whole thing.

4.5 superb
Between the Buried and Me The Great Misdirect
I think that it's impossible for Between the Buried and Me to top 'Colors', but 'The Great Misdirect' is an excellent follow-up that simultaneously keeps BTBAM's signature style while exploring new possibilities. "Fossil Genera" and "Desert of Song" are my favorites, and the only gripe I have is the length of "Swim to the Moon". Check out: "Fossil Genera", "Desert of Song", "Obfuscation", "Disease, Injury, Madness"
Between the Buried and Me Colors_Live
Black Sabbath Paranoid
Black Sabbath's second album, 'Paranoid' is a revolutionary release that is essentially the most important metal album in existence. The entire first side is perfect in my opinion, and the second side offers some great music as well. I'd consider it an essential listen for not only metal fans, but those who appreciate music in general. Check out: "Iron Man", "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Paranoid"
Boston Boston
Boston's self-titled debut is probably the greatest debut album ever recorded. The songwriting here is superb, the production is out of this world, and the album is enjoyable throughout.
David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
'Ziggy Stardust' is the definitive David Bowie album, and is definitely worth a listen by anybody who is into music. The title track, "Suffragette City", "Moonage Daydream", "Starman", and "It Ain't Easy" are all incredible cuts, and the rest of the album is great as well.
David Bowie Low
'Low' marked a new period for Bowie, as he moved to Berlin to work with Brian Eno. The result is an incredible album with some solid cuts on the first half but with some of the most amazing, beautiful, and haunting pieces on the second half.
David Bowie Blackstar
Deep Purple Machine Head
Devin Townsend Ziltoid the Omniscient
'Ziltoid the Omniscient' is truly a solo album, as almost everything is done by Devin himself. Wacky, zany, and enjoyable, Ziltoid is one of Devin Townsend's top releases, containing some of his best songs (particularly "By Your Command", "Hyperdrive", and "The Greys").
Devin Townsend Empath
Devin Townsend Project Deconstruction
Combining the heaviness of Strapping Young Lad with incredible songwriting, symphonic elements, a variety of guest performances, and even some humor, 'Deconstruction' makes its way on my top albums of all time. Devin spent a great deal of time into producing this masterpiece, and it pays off, being one of the best sounding albums I've heard in my life. The title track may be a bit too ridiculous for some, but otherwise, the rest of the album is pure gold. Check out: The whole thing.
Devin Townsend Project Ki
Devin Townsend Project Epicloud
I absolutely love this. Combining the catchy songwriting and style of 'Addicted', some of the heaviness and orchestration of 'Deconstruction', some quiet sections reminiscent of 'Ghost', 'Epicloud' is the sum of what Devin's achieved over the past three albums, with new elements thrown in (including the gorgeous gospel choir that begins and ends the album). There's songs like "Lucky Animals" and "More!" which are badass, fun goodness, and there's also more emotional sections like those in "Where We Belong", "Divine", "Hold On" and "Angel" that give me chills. Anneke's vocals are stunning as always, and the production is top notch ("Kingdom" sounds incredible!). Even if I've rated it so high so early, I know 'Epicloud' retain its (effervescent) quality. Check out: The whole thing.
Devin Townsend Project Transcendence
Dream Theater Images and Words
Dream Theater achieved great success with 'Images and Words', which is much deserved considering the quality of this record. The only song keeping this down at a 4.5 is the cheesy "Surrounded": otherwise, it's completely brilliant.
Dream Theater Awake
I used to think that Awake was my favorite Dream Theater album, and to this day, it is still fantastic. However, despite the greatness of most of its tracks and the stellar production, I can't give it a perfect score, mainly because of "Innocence Faded". Still, this album is highly recommended by me, as it's probably my second favorite Dream Theater album now.
Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
There's always been something that's bothered me about this album, whether it's the production or a few of the songs, but I don't know why it does. Regardless, 'Metropolis Pt. 2' is a fantastic Dream Theater album that's worthy of being called their best. The story is interesting, the references to 'Metropolis Pt. 1' are very cool, and of course, the musicianship and songwriting are top notch.
Dream Theater Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Call me crazy, but this might be Dream Theater's best album. Unlike most of their other albums, in which there is at least one weak song, the entirety of 'Black Cloud & Silver Linings' is fantastic. From the epic "A Nightmare to Remember" to the beautiful "The Best of Times" to the perfect closer "The Count of Tuscany", 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings' is the final and best album by the definitive Dream Theater lineup. Check out: The whole thing.
Frank Zappa Joe's Garage
Frank Zappa has far too much material for me to follow, but if there's one album of his I'd most highly recommend, it'd be 'Joe's Garage'. The album combines a very humorous, yet serious social commentary with some of Zappa's most memorable songs. There's too many great songs to mention in this short blurb, but it, like many of my other top albums, is an album that needs to be listened to in its entirety.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Gustav Holst The Planets, Op. 32
Igor Stravinsky Le Sacre du Printemps
Iron Maiden Powerslave
Judas Priest Painkiller
Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly
King Crimson Red
'Red' is King Crimson's final "classic" album, and it is one of their best, only topped by 'In the Court of the Crimson King'. It combines elements from all across King Crimson's career, with the harder rock of "Red" and "One More Red Nightmare" contrasted by the epic ballad "Starless", which is arguably the greatest King Crimson song ever. The album's only flaw is in "Providence", the album's only improvised track.
King Crimson Discipline
Though many progressive rock bands went pop as the 80's came around (I'm looking at you, Genesis and Yes), King Crimson changed their sound, yet retained the musicianship and creativity of their heyday. From the weird and funky "Elephant Talk" to the beautiful "Matte Kudasai", to the ridiculously catchy "Thela Hun Ginjeet", Discipline is a fantastic album that shows how a band can adapt to changing times without selling out.
Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin II
'Led Zeppelin II' is an excellent album, with staples such as "Whole Lotta Love", "What Is and What Should Never Be", "Heartbreaker", "Ramble On", and "Moby Dick". Definitely one of Led Zeppelin's best.
Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin IV
There's a reason why this unnamed album is considered to be one of the best of all time. Aside from classic rock staple and what is considered to be the best song ever written by many, "Stairway to Heaven", the album also contains some of Led Zeppelin's best songs, including "Black Dog", "Rock and Roll", "Misty Mountain Hop", and "When the Levee Breaks". While other Led Zeppelin albums do have their excellent moments, none reach the level of brilliance of 'Led Zeppelin IV'.
Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125
Beethoven's 9th Symphony is often considered to be the greatest piece of music ever written, and it's probably true. Everything from the opening notes of the first movement to the glorious "Ode to Joy" section is brilliant.
Megadeth Rust in Peace
Metallica ...And Justice for All
While receiving a lot of criticism for its production that includes little bass and its long songs, '...And Justice For All' always has a place in my heart. Whether it's the combination of classic Metallica thrash with some progressive elements, or the awesome sound of Lars's drum set, or just the greatness of songs like "One" and "To Live is To Die", this album is certainly Metallica's best in my opinion. Check out: "One", "To Live is To Die", "Blackened", "...And Justice for All", "The Shortest Straw", "Dyers Eve"
Metallica Ride the Lightning
With 'Ride the Lightning', Metallica became more than just a run-of-the-mill thrash metal band while retaining their heaviness and speed of their debut. Songs like "Fade to Black" and "The Call of Ktulu" show a more softer and emotional side to the band, while songs like "Fight Fire With Fire" and "Creeping Death" show Metallica at their fiercest.
Miles Davis Kind of Blue
'Kind of Blue' is the essential jazz record for both enthusiasts and casual listeners, such as I. Whether you use it as soothing background music, or you take a close listen to the solos, Miles Davis's classic does not disappoint, and is one of those records that most people should listen to and will probably enjoy.
Nick Drake Five Leaves Left
Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral
Trent Reznor created a dark, brooding masterpiece with 'The Downward Spiral', as it perfectly recreates the thoughts of depression and suicide through music. While most of the album is full of incredible songs, the album's best moment is on its closer, "Hurt". While Johnny Cash's cover is the most well known version of the song, I personally prefer the original, as it is one of the most beautiful, yet depressing songs I've heard. Check out: "Hurt", "Heresy", "Closer", "March of the Pigs"
Opeth Still Life
The first Opeth album I listened to was 'Still Life', and it remains as my favorite of theirs. Combining elements of death metal and traditional heavy metal with progressive and acoustic passages as well as an excellent story, 'Still Life' is indeed a brilliant album. Not only do heavy tracks like "The Moor", "Godhead's Lament", and "Serenity Painted Death" stand out, but the softer songs, "Benighted" and "Face of Melinda" display the best Opeth has to offer.
Pink Floyd Animals
Pink Floyd The Wall
'The Wall' is a brilliantly crafted concept album, and one of the greatest of its kind. The story of Pink, which echoes that of Roger Waters, is very depressing, and songs such as "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb" are some of the most beautiful songs ever written. Aside from the album's length, which may be too long for some, and the inclusion of a few filler tracks, 'The Wall' is nearly perfect.
Porcupine Tree Fear of a Blank Planet
Queen A Night at the Opera
Queen's magnum opus, 'A Night at the Opera', showcases the variety Queen has to offer in its best possible way. Not only does it contain the classic "Bohemian Rhapsody", which is arguably Queen's greatest achievement, but it also contains some of Queen's other underrated classics, such as "Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)", "'39", "The Prophet's Song", and "Love of My Life". Certainly an album for the ages. Check out: The whole thing.
Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime
'Operation: Mindcrime' is certainly one of my favorite albums of the 80's, and for good reason. The story of Nikki and the messages it portrays are very captivating, and the music itself is stellar, with not a bad moment throughout. While it may not be as 'progressive' as some other albums in the genre, it is indeed an incredible album with memorable songs such as Queensryche staples "I Don't Believe in Love" and "Eyes of a Stranger". It's a shame that Queensryche never made an album that even comes close to what 'Operation: Mindcrime' did. Check out: The whole thing.

St. Vincent St. Vincent
Steven Wilson The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories)
Stevie Wonder Innervisions

The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour
The Beatles The Beatles
'The Beatles' is a fantastic release, containing some of The Beatles' best work, especially songs like "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Dear Prudence", and "Helter Skelter". The only thing that keeps this from a perfect score is the fact that it's a double album with some filler tracks: otherwise, it's a superb album.
The Beatles Revolver
The Beatles Rubber Soul
The Devin Townsend Band Accelerated Evolution
The Zombies Odessey and Oracle
'Odessey and Oracle' is a classic 60's album full of catchy songs, beautiful harmonies, and some of the best music of the period. While some tracks are more memorable than others, it's certainly worth a listen.

An underrated Bowie classic, 'Young Americans' takes a funkier and more soulful turn and contains some of his best music. "Win", "Fascination", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", and the hit "Fame" are some of the best moments.
David Bowie Station to Station
A classic album by the Thin White Duke, 'Station to Station' contains some of Bowie's finest material. The title track, "Golden Years", and "TVC 15" are all excellent tracks.

Dream Theater Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Dream Theater Train of Thought
'Train of Thought' is arguably the heaviest album in Dream Theater's discography, though it is also among their best. Practically every song on here has some sort of significance to me, and the one ballad on here, "Vacant", is very tasteful.
Dream Theater Octavarium
'Octavarium' is a fantastic record and another solid addition to Dream Theater's discography. It's not as heavy or as technical as some of their earlier releases, and "I Walk Beside You" doesn't do much for me, but the epic title track more than makes up for this.
Dream Theater Systematic Chaos
While controversial to many. 'Systematic Chaos' is an excellent Dream Theater album which shows some of the best they have to offer. "Repentance" and "The Ministry of Lost Souls" are the high points.
Dream Theater A Change of Seasons
dredg Catch Without Arms
Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Emerson, Lake and Palmer Brain Salad Surgery
Emerson, Lake and Palmer's fourth release is indeed their best. Not only is there the epic "Karn Evil 9" suite, which is the album's highlight, but tracks like "Jerusalem" and "Still... You Turn Me On" are also very well written. A must have for prog fans.
Ennio Morricone The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Fear Factory Mechanize
After a major dispute over the Fear Factory name, the reborn Fear Factory produced what I believe is their finest release. 'Mechanize' is heavier, faster, but also more memorable than even their classic releases. In addition, "Final Exit" is not only the best song on the album, but the best Fear Factory song in general.

Machine Head have crafted a metal masterpiece with 'The Blackening'. Not only is it vigorously aggressive, but the usage of memorable vocal melodies and clean guitars is also well done. "Halo", "Aesthetics of Hate", "Now I Lay Thee Down", and "Beautiful Mourning" are the highlights.

Opeth Blackwater Park
Pantera Vulgar Display of Power
Pantera Cowboys from Hell
At the onset of the 90's, thrash metal was beginning to demise, but a metal band named Pantera kept metal going as grunge/alt rock began to gain popularity. 'Cowboys From Hell' is far heavier than anything the band released during their glam days, and the songwriting is far better as well. Heavy songs like the title track, "Domination", and "Primal Concrete Sledge" are all awesome, but the best track is undeniably "Cemetery Gates", the album's main ballad.
Pantera The Great Southern Trendkill
'The Great Southern Trendkill' has always been my favorite Pantera album, as it displays the band at both their heaviest and their most emotional. "Floods" and "Suicide Note" are particularly the best tracks.

Not to mention that "Forever Love" is probably the most beautiful song ever written.

I don't know why only the highlights from Phantom album is featured here, but regardless, the music that Andrew Lloyd Webber creates here is stunning. Seeing an actual performance of The Phantom of the Opera is the best way to experience the story and feel the emotions of the characters, but even listening to recordings of the music is incredible. 'Worship Music' is Anthrax's best album in a long while, as it rivals even their best material. Combining the speed and fury of classic Anthrax with catchy melodies in songs like "Fight 'em 'til You Can't" and "The Devil You Know", this is definitely a contender for one of the best metal albums of the year, and it is the album Anthrax needed to make.

Dream Theater Falling into Infinity
Dream Theater A Dramatic Turn of Events
'A Dramatic Turn of Events' is a solid Dream Theater release, despite being without Portnoy. Some of the longer, more developed tracks stand out, but sadly, the album feels too much like a rehash of Dream Theater's earlier material, and the cheesy ballad, "Beneath the Surface", doesn't help much either.

Frank Sinatra In The Wee Small Hours
'In the Wee Small Hours' is one of the first concept albums to come into existence, and it's also one of the best. Full of brilliant string arrangements and Sinatra's signature voice, 'In the Wee Small Hours' is an incredibly emotional album that conveys loneliness in a way that almost anybody can relate to.

Joy Division Unknown Pleasures
I'm starting to like this a bit more, despite hating it at first. Give it some time, and I rmight enjoy it even more. Ian Curtis' vocals still aren't good, but listening to it again, rthey're a bit more tolerable and fit with the music better. I'll still say that this is an rincredibly overrated record, but I understand it a bit more now.
Joy Division Closer
This album has the exact same strengths and flaws that 'Unknown Pleasures' has. It's such a shame that some of the good musical moments on 'Closer' have to be ruined by the vocals.r(the last two tracks are really good though)

Megadeth Endgame
Even though it's named after a documentary by conspiracy nut Alex Jones, 'Endgame' proves itself to be a great Megadeth album. While it offers very little new to the table, it is a solid album that shows that Megadeth still has it after all of these years.
Megadeth Countdown to Extinction
While somewhat of a departure from Megadeth's thrash roots, 'Countdown to Extinction' is still a solid album with a variety of great songs.

Mirrorthrone Gangrene
'Gangrene' is one of the finest examples of symphonic metal that is aggressive and fast, yet melodic and progressive at the same time. Vladimir Cochet blends neo-classical, black metal, and gothic influences to create the best album of his career. I strongly recommend the entire album, though tracks such as "Dismay", "No One By My Side", and "So Frail" are standouts.

'Origin of Symmetry' is a great album that is definitive of Muse's sound. Some tracks get a bit samey, but a lot of it is enjoyable stuff, especially "Plug in Baby", "New Born", and their cover of "Feeling Good".
Muse Absolution
'Absolution' is an excellent album, and it definitely shows the best Muse has to offer. "Stockholm Syndrome", "Falling Away With You", and "Hysteria" are high points.

'Disintegration' is an album that I feel is incredibly overrated. While others see this as an incredibly emotional record that is one of the best of all time, my ears tell me that it's a byproduct of the 80's, full of cheese and basic songwriting. The production is nice, and tracks such as "Lullaby" and "Fascination Street" are decent, but the album as a whole is too lengthy, too predictable, and it doesn't break the confines of typical 80's pop music.

The riffs and songs themselves are good at best, and repetitive and uninspired at worst, but what ruins any chance of this album of being tolerable are Lou Reed's atrocious vocals. I would cut my legs and tits off when I think of this terrible excuse for an album.
Megadeth Super Collider
Morbid Angel Illud Divinum Insanus
Despite being hated by most death metal purists, 'Illud Divinum Insanus' is actually a decent album with some variety and catchy riffs. It's only hated on because it's not much like Morbid Angel, aside from a few tracks.
Nostalgia Critic The Wall
Queensryche Dedicated to Chaos
Just as Queensryche was taking steps in the right direction with 'American Soldier', they decided to release a complete shitter of an album. Uninspired, and complete with several cringeworthy moments, including the single "Wot We Do" and 'Around the World", 'Dedicated to Chaos' shows us wot not to do when making an album.
