Midnight Oil Diesel and Dust
Unlike many vaguely dissatisfied modern bands, Midnight Oil knows why they're angry, and they're smart enough to articulate it in a straightforward way that anyone can follow. Brimming with righteous indignation, you can tell this came from something special (Blackfella/Whitefella tour of 1986). The seemingly basic straight ahead rock of this is coloured with tons of interesting touches. They're not pretentious, but they aren't generic. It's a great political record, and it's a blast to listen to. Crank up Bullroarer and tell me I'm wrong.

The most consistent and best of the first 3 records. Really lean songs, and the production sounds
more even than Youth. Greg lets you in a bit on this one, so probably the easiest entry point, and
the most instantly likeable in the opening salvo. Deceptively ahead of its time.

The movie didn't generate an extreme reaction for me - not a masterpiece or a disaster. But in the
reviews I've read, the score does not get enough props, even if it did win numerous awards
(including an Academy award). It really is one of the important elements that lifts the film above
just being solid.

Rodriguez Cold Fact
The weirdest, most rock and roll show I've ever been to was Rodriguez. The guy was a total jerk to the touring band (of highly professional musicians) that was supplied to him; they walked off a few times because he was so insufferable. At one point the crowd threw a blunt on stage and he was crawling around on all fours to pick it up. After the show, everyone collectively forgot about all the negatives. Such is the power of this record; people will forgive a total bellend.

Marilyn Manson Mechanical Animals
For such a smart guy, I've always been baffled by Manson's pedestrian (at best) lyrics. He's also
a man who likes a grand concept. I never knew this album was supposed to be part two of some
ridiculous rock opera, but it makes sense now that I'm more informed. Half of it is about some
weird commercial rock robot who churns out nihilistic alterna-glam for a corporation. It's big,
dumb, brassy fun. Most importantly, it can survive outside of the "story". The other half is about
Marilyn Manson learning to feel or something, and varies wildly in quality. Think how good this
would have been with 3 more glam songs and pretty much none of the other stuff.

The great closer brought me to this record. Starts off excellently but one does feel like many of the songs read as wordy, listy rants that get a bit samey. As others have said, perhaps a little more melody wouldn't have gone amiss.

I think this is for genre aficionados. I prefer my hip hop in small doses, but unfortunately it
seems to be the genre of large doses. Dense and relentless, I think there's lots going on here but
I can't seem to focus on the elements and it begins to get a little monotonous, ironically because
of the clutter. For purists or connoisseurs.

This has some good moments, but as with most of Cave's output over the years, I still find his delivery is, for the most part, overwrought - it's a taste I've just never acquired. Also, the way he uses repetition will resonate with some people, but for me it's hit and miss. I get why people are loving this though.

occasionally, a little bit of beat and pace appears in the calming clover of the ambient field. i can't really say anything negative about this, but i'd probably not fire it up again personally. it feels like music that might be more useful rather than soul stirring. if this provides utility that you have need for, then have at it.

I think the level of mixing of shoegaze and country is overstated, but maybe that's just me. Some songs are a blend but not to the degree that the hype would suggest, and probably more of an alt rock country vibe anyway when there is considerable crossover. The vocals are pretty average, and frankly some of these songs don't go anywhere. Some good lyrics in places. Standouts are Hot Rotten Grass Smell, Got Shocked, Quarry, and the opening 2.5 minutes of Bull Believer (wish they'd split the song in two)

Blues Traveler Four
Bobbie Gentry Local Gentry
The opener is fun, and there's wry wit in the best of Gentry's self-penned numbers. Her tracks on
the second half are less successful. The majority of the numbers on this are covers (3 Beatles
songs), and they range from ok to actively offensive, such as the easy listening take on Eleanor
Rigby. Smacks of a lack of confidence in her own work after the excellent Delta Sweete did not
perform as well as her debut.

The music is beautiful in places, but the vocals don't work for me. I'd have liked this more if
the vocal melodies were less theatrical storytelling type stuff, and he'd brought in a vocalist

might be an amazing experience, as the backing has some subtle unexpected flourishes.

Sounds a bit like a bar that insists on a jacket, and has all the counters underlit with strip lighting. Said bar regularly has designer liquor promotions for drinks that come in strangely shaped bottles, or the glass is treated in an unusual way (like frosting, a novel colour, etc). In addition, the bottle may have little interesting details like a small plastic purple gem on the front.

Sleep Token Take Me Back to Eden
You can throw raw cinnamon powder, vanilla essence, and excrement into a glass of milk, and call it a delicious milkshake. But it would not be a delicious milkshake.
Small Faces Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake
A great cautionary tale for popular musicians. Don't tack on a novelty concept to your stuff, it doesn't age well. However, if you are into all things cockney, this may appeal to you.
Sonic Youth Confusion Is Sex

Sophie Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides

Lmao, 'Stay stay stay' sounds like that Train song.
Taylor Swift 1989
Taylor Swift Folklore

This is pretty weird. I could be wrong, but it sounds like a prog Panic at the Disco.

The Flaming Lips King's Mouth
The Lagoons Daybreak
The Lumineers The Lumineers
The Mars Volta De-Loused in the Comatorium
The Microphones Mount Eerie

The National I Am Easy to Find
It's bland. It's homogeneous. There are no moments.
There is no magic.
The Offspring Smash
The Police Zenyatta Mondatta
The Rolling Stones Their Satanic Majesties Request
WTF did I just listen to? 'She's a rainbow' is an amazing song, the rest of this is... questionable. There's an 8 minute bunch of noise in the middle which sounds precisely like the desperation of a band who feels like they're behind the curve.
The Rolling Stones Hackney Diamonds
The Weeknd Starboy
Third Eye Blind Blue
Thirty Seconds to Mars A Beautiful Lie
Thirty Seconds to Mars This Is War

1.5 very poor
Alanis Morissette Such Pretty Forks in the Road
Diagnosis must be one of the worst songs I've heard this year.
Andrew W.K. I Get Wet
Ane Brun Portrayals
(distinctive vocal / pretty but modest vocal) X familiarity + supposed exposed hidden depths =
profit.
Annie Anniemal
Ashnikko Demidevil
Listening to this reminds me of the time I
went to see Die Antwoord. Everyone around me
was lapping up their schtick, but I stood
alone, unable to enjoy what is the musical
equivalent of a fart joke.

Can we all admit this band sucks? If I had to picture rock music personified as a zombie, it would be Dave Grohl's face on the rotting corpse.
Guns N' Roses G N' R Lies
Hole Pretty On The Inside
James Blunt Back To Bedlam
Jentina Jentina
Joan Osborne Breakfast in Bed
Kanye West Jesus Is King
Katy Perry One of the Boys

Kylie Minogue X
Lily Allen Alright, Still
Lorde Solar Power
Another misleading album title, I thought this would be a meditation on inverters and deep cycle batteries
Lou Reed Metal Machine Music
While this does get boring pretty quickly, the sound is not actually as unpleasant as I expected - there's an accidental symphonic vibe to it. But yeah, unless you're looking for background noise, it's not good. I think it's wild that this was released by a reasonably well known artist. Imagine being poor old Johnny record buyer and purchasing this without reading any reviews or a pre-listen - I would have been so bummed that I spent my pocket money on this. Lou could be a cruel bastard.
Machine Gun Kelly Lace Up (LP)
Manchester Orchestra Christmas Songs Vol. 1
MC Hammer Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em
Meghan Trainor Takin' It Back
This sounds like it spontaneously materialized between the clicks of a Newton's Cradle
Nickelback Silver Side Up
Nightwish Over The Hills And Far Away
nothing,nowhere. Trauma Factory
Olivia Rodrigo Guts
Panic! at the Disco A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
Pink Floyd The Wall
74 minutes of self-pity filtered through a clumsy rock opera. And Comfortably Numb is also on this, hence 1.5 rather than 1. Waters basically repeats this in a slightly more palatable way on the next one.
Poison Open Up and Say... Ahh!
Primitive Radio Gods Rocket
Rina Sawayama Sawayama
The base is generic, slightly dated pop album.
Then every calculated "kooky" decision to set
this apart from other pop albums is just a
horrible misstep. Like awful guitar tones and
laughable vocal effects. Track 4 is pretty
cool though, I wish it leaned more into that
sound.

1.0 awful
100 Gecs 1000 gecs
Animal Collective Danse Manatee
Arcade Fire Everything Now
What do you get when great bands purposefully distance themselves from what made them great to be intentionally difficult? You get amateurish versions of something else, and all their worst tendencies are magnified.
Bloodhound Gang Hooray For Boobies

Ed Sheeran is a subversive greeting card writer. That sounds as if it might be interesting, so let me qualify that by saying it's in no way a compliment.

I'll be honest, I really like 'Knockout', so I figured "how bad can it REALLY be"? You kinda have to admire something this boneheaded though.
Limp Bizkit The Unquestionable Truth - Part I
