Carcass Heartwork
Is there such a thing as a perfectly balanced metal album? I think there is, and it is Heartwork. A lot of people don't realize it, but there really is an incredible amount of variation in the Metal genre. Fast and slow, heavy and light, dark and uplifting, and everything in between. There are genres for your preference and amazing albums in practically every style. Carcass did the unthinkable and made an album that, in my opinion, accentuates the positives of all the sub-genres of metal and displays it in thoughtful brevity. Yes, this is technically the first Melodeath album, but it really doesn't sound like other Melodeath albums. Give it a listen or two and you'll understand that there is everything a metal enthusiast could hope for here: catchiness, aggressiveness, progressive elements, and beautiful solos. I'd argue that even the vocals fill this "every-style" role perfectly by filling in the space between coherent singing and brutal growling. All the features are displayed just as much as they need to and nothing is overdone. I'll end the ramble with this: even though I think this album can stand up to the very best in all metal styles, it doesn't evoke the sense of needing to compete and instead exists almost as a celebration of the genre. The wide-open arms on the cover say "welcome listener, welcome to metal."
Cynic Focus
Better described as a defining event in the metal genre than as an album. Unparalleled, transcendental music.
Daft Punk Discovery
The sound of my childhood. I can't properly appraise this album without waves of nostalgia pouring into my words. All I can say is that as soon as I listen to Discovery, I can feel my worries melt away and I go to a place of happiness and joy.
Daft Punk Alive 2007
A perfect harmony of all of Daft Punk's material (before Random Access Memories) combined with an absolutely stellar visual performance makes this a live album/live video for the ages.
Death Symbolic
Not actually my favorite Death album, but Symbolic stands out for the amount of love and care put into it. Every single song is stellar, memorable, and well-recorded. Chucks vocals fit perfectly into an audible-yet-brutal style and the lyrical themes on this album are easy to follow and understand.
Demolition Hammer Epidemic of Violence
The perfect marriage of raw aggression and a craving to fucking KILL. This is the pinnacle of deathrash.
Devin Townsend Ocean Machine: Biomech
A celebration of life with all of its complexities and nuances. Heavy and light, aggressive and calm, emotional and cerebral all at the same time. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this album will live on for many many years from now.
Dissection Storm of the Light's Bane
Edge of Sanity Crimson
Fleetwood Mac Rumours
Iron Maiden Somewhere in Time
Although most would consider Powerslave or The Number of the Beast to be the definitive Maiden album, Somewhere in Time is the most deserving of that spot. Firstly, every single song is memorable and unique which cannot be said for the other albums. Even if they have a few stronger songs (Hallowed Be Thy Name, Aces High) they also have weaker songs (The Duelists, Gangland). Secondly and finally is that Maiden perfectly combined progressive elements in their lyrics and music without sacrificing the hard-hitting tones that they're known for. All in all, this is a perfect album because there is nothing that could be improved or changed.
Judas Priest Painkiller
Painkiller is the greatest revival album ever made. I'm not aware of another example where a band that is considered as influential back in the day to younger groups then becomes influenced by the new styles and gets so reinvigorated that they release the best album of their careers.

This album is heavy, it's fast, nothing is half-baked, but most importantly it is an iconic symbol of the timeless aspect in metal that keeps the passion for music inside all of us burning.
Lykathea Aflame Elvenefris
Like a good piece of art, Elvenefris leaves you puzzled upon your first encounter and keeps you coming back to contemplate and analyze its meaning. An intense, spiritual experience--this album is so perfectly dense that it gets better with subsequent listens. Even the outro instrumental, while a tad long, gives you time to reflect and meditate after the intensity of the vocals and riffs have washed over you.

Don't expect to like it on the first listen! It took me several play-through's to really absorb the tasteful song structures, incredible drum fills, unorthodox lyrics, and emotive melodies. It's technical enough to keep your mind occupied, but simple enough to remain memorable and that's what makes it such a rewarding listen.
Megadeth Rust in Peace
Pig Destroyer Prowler in the Yard
When I first heard the computerized voice at the beginning I thought I had stumbled onto some kind of spoken-word album and was about ready to close the tab. I stuck through the speech, however, and after listening to the entire album without pause I had only one thought: this is beautiful, this is art.
Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime
A symbol of perfection. Much can be said to properly praise Operation: Mindcrime, but my simple gauge of excellence is that this album never gets old and anyone who likes music will enjoy it.
Radiohead OK Computer
Slayer Reign in Blood
Reign in Blood is a rogue wave witnessed and remembered by all who sail the seas of music. It passes over quickly, but you will be absolutely crushed by the unforgettable experience.
Talking Heads Remain in Light

4.5 superb
Anthrax Among the Living
Thrash personified. Aggressive, catchy, and just plain fun with zero filler or drop in quality.
Artillery By Inheritance
A nearly flawless album with so many strong points that it's amazing how much one song can ruin it's staying power. I'm referring of course to the cover of "Razamanaz." Not that it's a particularly bad song (which it isn't) or that it's a particularly bad cover (it's not), but the fact that it absolutely ruins the sense of atmosphere and flow in By Inheritance. The fast-paced riffs and the brilliant, dark melodies throughout the album are cohesive and work well together, but if they had gone without this one stupid cover song then the album as a whole would have been much better.
Autopsy Mental Funeral
Atmospheric dread in sonic form. The riffs in conjunction with the production absolutely nail the feeling of an oppressive, sinister force either lurking in the shadows or deep in the recesses of your mind.
Blood Incantation Hidden History of the Human Race
Carcass Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
Children of Bodom Follow the Reaper
Children of Bodom Hatebreeder
Coroner Mental Vortex
Coroner No More Color
Death The Sound of Perseverance
Death Individual Thought Patterns
Death Human
Demolition Hammer Tortured Existence
Devin Townsend Terria
On my first listen I thought it was terrible, but it's a hell of a grower. Take time to feel the music, it isn't the standard metal fare where you can tell something is good by the riffs because this album is so much more than that which really sets it apart from the genre in many ways. If at all possible, listen to this album while going on a nice long roadtrip, preferably on the Trans-Canada Highway.
Edge of Sanity Crimson II
Fourty-three minutes of Dan Swano dickslapping every musician with his Melodic Progressive Power Death Metal epic.

Possibly my personal favorite metal album ever, but I can't give it a 5 because Crimson is objectively better.
Gorguts Obscura
Horrendous Anareta
In Flames The Jester Race
Iron Maiden Powerslave
Iron Maiden Piece of Mind
Iron Maiden Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Judas Priest Stained Class
Judas Priest Sad Wings of Destiny
Metallica Ride the Lightning
Morbid Angel Altars of Madness
Pig Destroyer Terrifyer
Radiohead Kid A
Radiohead In Rainbows
Sepultura Arise
Arise doesn't appear to be the godly album that it is on first glance. If you're the type of person to skip around on songs or listen to a little bit of each track to get an appraisal, you won't understand the metal genius on this record. It's not the fastest or heaviest album, but Sepultura found a perfect balance between song structure, flow, aggression, and atmosphere to craft a timeless album that never loses its edge.
Sepultura Beneath the Remains
Strapping Young Lad City
SYL's Magnum Opus and likely the finest example of Industrial/Extreme Metal that will ever be. The very first time I heard it I was absolutely blown away by the denseness, ferocity, and emotion.
Toxik Think This
A technical masterpiece. Immensely futuristic in its composition and yet still retains the charm and tone of the 80's. Shame about the cover song, but the rest of the album is so well crafted that it honestly doesn't matter.
Vektor Terminal Redux

4.0 excellent
Anacrusis Screams and Whispers
Although Manic Impressions is the more popular album, Screams and Whispers holds my spot for best Anacrusis album and possibly the best progressive thrash album ever. Anacrusis didn't tone down the metal, but I feel like they added more progressive elements especially a much larger focus on keyboards and atmospheric sounds. Besides the musical progressiveness, I think the band also succeeded in improving their overall songwriting by paying close attention to each song and giving each one a good flow and transition between the verse riffs and choruses.
Annihilator Alice in Hell
Annihilator Never, Neverland
Aspid Extravasation
At the Gates Slaughter of the Soul
Atheist Unquestionable Presence
Bolt Thrower Those Once Loyal
Bolt Thrower War Master
Bolt Thrower The IVth Crusade
Bolt Thrower ...For Victory
Brutality Screams of Anguish
This album fascinates me immensely because it has that OSDM attitude and sound, but then the song structures reveal more of a wall of sound approach with a rich, dark atmosphere in practically all of the songs. Ahead of its time for sure.
Carpenter Brut Trilogy
Children of Bodom Hate Crew Deathroll
Children of Bodom Hexed
Control Denied The Fragile Art of Existence
Everyone who thinks this is diet Death have only listened to it once or perhaps only partially. The Fragile Art of Existence is Chuck moving in a new direction for sure, but he still holds onto his uncanny skills as a songwriter to put real depth and excellent transitioning into each song. No, this album won't blow you away, but listen carefully and you can hear a very intricate album that is pleasing to hear no matter what your mood is. The lyrics are thoughtful reflections on a variety of themes and topics, and the solos are just as tasteful as ever. If you are at all a fan of Death or metal in general, please listen to this with open ears and keep the memory of Chuck Schuldiner alive!

Decapitated Winds of Creation
Sometimes you can gauge an album's quality by the first 30 seconds that your hear. For me, Winds of Creation was an instant favorite as soon as the intro riff kicked in and the entire album just gets better from there. I have yet to hear tighter death metal riffs; everything is so coherent and the production is superb. The Eye of Horus might also be one of the best death metal songs of all time and it was written/performed by teenagers!

Immolation Dawn of Possession

In Flames Colony
Colony mirrors Covenant by Morbid Angel in that it shows that a band can re-use what made their earlier days so great while also looking forward to the future.
In Flames Whoracle
Iron Maiden The Number of the Beast
Iron Maiden Brave New World
Iron Maiden A Matter of Life and Death
You either love this album, or you think it's just okay. For me, this is Maiden accomplishing what is so very hard to do: crafting an album up to par with their past material and without anything that could be considered filler. Besides the overall quality, I also think this is the heaviest album Maiden have made, but it doesn't sound forced.
Judas Priest Defenders of the Faith
Delicious 80's cheese with real heart. The metal gods continue their foray into speed metal and make some killer tracks. I don't care who you are, The Sentinel is hands-down the best song in metal.
Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance
Judas Priest Firepower
Killswitch Engage Alive or Just Breathing
Kreator Coma of Souls
Kreator Extreme Aggression
Kreator Terrible Certainty
Malevolent Creation Retribution
Megadeth Countdown to Extinction
Megadeth Youthanasia
Megadeth Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?
Megadeth Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!
Megadeth So Far, So Good... So What!
Dave's emotions transformed into an album. You can feel the vitriol, remorse, and hopefulness in the whole album (except maybe the Sex Pistols cover.) Many see this album as a step down from the lofty, semi-jazzy heights reached in Peace Sells, but I don't see it that way. I view this album as a thrash album first and foremost. What makes it stand out is the fact that every song has purpose and meaning, all the riffs have that signature punkish aspect combined with speed and a little bit of technicality, and Dave's lyrics have turned from the make-believe to the political and the personal. A stepping stone to their magnum opus to be sure, but an important aspect in Megadeth's catalog nonetheless.
Metal Church Metal Church
Metallica Master of Puppets
Metallica ...And Justice for All
Morbid Angel Covenant
With Covenant, Morbid Angel did what few bands have successfully done--go back to their roots. Covenant has tight, thrashy riffs like Altars of Madness and it's presented with their superior songwriting skills acquired from Blessed are the Sick. Improvement in production also adds to a much darker atmosphere and Sandoval's drums sound crisp.
Morbid Saint Spectrum of Death
Brutality that skirts the line between thrash and death while maintaining a unique tone and vocals only brought down by the production and lack of variety.
My Bloody Valentine Loveless
Necrophobic The Nocturnal Silence
I keep coming back to my rating of this album and thinking, "do I really think it's that good?" Time and time again I re-listen to it and conclude that yes, it is that good. Besides the crushing riffs and the blackened atmosphere, there is a surprising amount of diversity in this album which I think is the standout feature for me. There are more brutal albums, there are more trve albums, but there are few that can perfectly combine the "metal-factor" with intelligent songwriting which can be found here.
Nocturnus The Key
Death-thrash with keyboards? It actually works, and works well. Structurally, The Key is a straightforward assault in the vein of Sadus or Dark Angel, but the neoclassical fills and keyboard overlays give this album an incredible atmosphere and tone that really gives it the feel of an album from the future. I'd say the thing that holds this album back is the over-reliance on guitar wankery and a few of the tracks being shows of technicality rather than being true songs. All the same, I love this album.
Nuclear Assault Handle with Care
Obituary Cause of Death
Opprobrium Beyond The Unknown
Pantera Cowboys from Hell
Pantera Vulgar Display of Power
None more groovy! CFH is my personal favorite, but I cannot deny that Pantera reached their apex with this album. Perfectly showcases the skills of each member of the band with better songwriting and even more aggression.

Folk metal that actually has balls. You'd think you're listening to a melodeath album with these riffs, but the vocals and violin segments quickly put that thought to rest. A phenomenal record with a surprising amount of variation, incredibly catchy riffs, and really thought-provoking lyrics.

Anacrusis Manic Impressions
Artillery When Death Comes
The closest we'll get to another By Inheritance. Unfortunately, it's a bit hit-or-miss on this record. Songs and riffs range from absolutely stunning to incredibly boring, but the positives outweigh the negatives and the singer is actually really good!

Death Angel Act III
Metallica's black album has a contender! Thrash that is less abrasive or aggressive than most, but it makes up for that with catchiness, intelligent songwriting, and good production.
Death Angel The Ultra-Violence
The guitarwork and riffs are impressive, but no matter how many times I try to listen to this album I get an aneurysm from the singing. It's like nails on a chalkboard. Besides the ear-ringing vocals, the rest of the production sounds incredibly tinny which doesn't help anything. With better production and any other singer, I would give this a 4 or even a 4.5, but it honestly detracts so much from my enjoyment that I won't go over 3.5
Decapitated Organic Hallucinosis
Decapitated Nihility
Decapitated The Negation
Demigod Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Destruction Release from Agony
Destruction Eternal Devastation
Devastation Signs of Life
Accurate title. Some good riffs show here, but ultimately they show signs of something better which they delivered with Idolatry.
Devin Townsend Physicist
I legitimately believe that some of Devin's best songs are on this album, but the filler material packaged alongside really drag them down to a more mediocre level. If Jupiter, Planet Rain, Namaste, and Kingdom were made by any other band or artist they would be absolute hits. Everyone has already made a point about the production and I have to agree, the dynamics of Devy's previous efforts just aren't at play here.
Disincarnate Dreams of the Carrion Kind
Entombed Clandestine
Entombed Wolverine Blues
I thought I would hate this album, but it's surprisingly catchy :v
Exhorder The Law
Groove, Thrash, and dare I say a bit of Grindcore? Hell yeah! Don't look for melody on this album, but if you listen to this as a full album you WILL feel the metal and appreciate the endless waves of riffs.
Forbidden Forbidden Evil
Forbidden Twisted into Form
Havok Time Is Up
Heathen Victims of Deception
Immolation Unholy Cult
In Flames Clayman
In Flames Subterranean
In Flames Black-Ash Inheritance
Iron Maiden Dance of Death
Iron Maiden Fear of the Dark
I understand a lot of the backlash against this album, but objectively it is a very solid album with a great amount of variety, catchy riffs, and interesting themes. I'm going to say this now: there are no bad songs on this album, only mediocre ones. The rock influence is strong here which may be off-putting to metal fans, but these "filler" songs are still memorable. The second and final downside to Fear of the Dark is that Bruce's voice is very harsh and raspy giving the impression of a vocalist attempting to sound raw and hard which doesn't work well with the smooth and technical tones of the guitars throughout the album. Other than these two points, Fear of the Dark is a rewarding album that feels like a roller coaster of tepid lows and soaring heights. It's a thoroughly enjoyable album, give it a spin!

This album doesn't deserve to be judged by the consequences of its release, but by its content. In my humble opinion, Metallica retained their uncanny ability to write memorable songs and still stayed within the realm of metal while also making it appealing to a much broader audience.
Morbid Angel Blessed Are the Sick
Morbid Angel Abominations of Desolation
Nocturnus Thresholds
Nuclear Assault Survive

The riffs are really good and surprisingly more technical than their later albums, but the guitar tone is so weak that it hinders the impact of the riffage significantly.
Perturbator I Am The Night
Perturbator The Uncanny Valley
Pestilence Spheres
Protector A Shedding of Skin
Intense riffage, excellent production, but lacking that special something. Seriously, with guitar tones this good it should have been a much better album. Clearly, the musicians have songwriting chops and they know how to write riffs, but there is something lacking in nearly every song that really ties together the musical concepts and holds your attention, it's probably the placid verses that seem to dull the intro or main riffs. Regardless, you WILL find yourself headbanging to this album, fans of Death Thrash should check this out!

Xentrix For Whose Advantage?
Structurally, this album barely passes for a 3. Most of the songs blend together and are very bland, but I gave it a 3.5 because some of the riffs on this album are really top notch and memorable. If this was a leaner and more focused effort it could have been amazing, but I think they just filled too much time with boring power chords.
Xentrix Shattered Existence

3.0 good
Adramelech Psychostasia
Artillery Terror Squad
The filler is real. Terror Squad starts out super strong with the first three tracks being killer thrash songs that everyone should hear, but the rest of the album is honestly very boring and sounds like filler.
Artillery Fear of Tomorrow
A solid album that showcases the bridge between heavy metal and thrash metal.
Bolt Thrower In Battle There Is No Law!
Bolt Thrower Mercenary
Bolt Thrower Honour - Valour - Pride
Children of Bodom Relentless Reckless Forever
Children of Bodom I Worship Chaos
Convulse World Without God
Dark Angel Leave Scars
Scratches the itch for death/thrash metal. Eccentric and intense, but without distinguishing characteristics due mostly to the long run-times of several of the songs. It's a more modern and slightly better version of Seven Churches honestly. Strangely, the production quality is even worse than Darkness Descends in my opinion. I thought subsequent albums were supposed to sound better?
Dismember Massive Killing Capacity
Dismember Indecent & Obscene
Horrendous Ecdysis
In Flames Lunar Strain
Judas Priest Angel of Retribution
Judas Priest Sin After Sin
Judas Priest Ram It Down
Pretty average speed metal, but this is Judas Priest, the masters of inconsistency. Even in their worst albums, they have astoundingly good songs. On Ram It Down there are only two tracks you need to listen to: Hard as Iron, and the epic Blood Red Skies.
Judas Priest Redeemer of Souls
Kreator Pleasure to Kill
A decent album in my opinion with middling production and really happy sounding riffs for what is supposed to be a violent and brutal album. The speed and vocals are excellent, but the ugly solos drag this record down considerably. Terrible Certainty was a massive leap forward and should be held as the standard for early Kreator rather than this.
Massacre Inhuman Condition
Megadeth The World Needs a Hero
Megadeth Risk

Morbid Saint Destruction System (Demo)
If they re-recorded this album I'd probably give it a 4. A lot heavier than Spectrum of Death and a lot of really catchy riffs in here.

2.0 poor
Dark Angel We Have Arrived
Early metallica without the catchiness. Their sophomore effort blew this so out of the water that this isn't really worth checking out unless you're a completionist or a big fan.
Death Angel Frolic Through the Park
Mayhem De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
The B-52s The B-52's

What happened to the LP that they were supposedly going to release? I really enjoyed the two songs from that project, but this EP is extremely underwhelming and feels like a total step-back from their progressive elements. The only track that I enjoyed was Psyop.

Immolation Here in After
Absolutely blown away, but not for the reason you'd expect. Dawn of Possession is a classic of OSDM that hints at a band that can improve and come into their own, but Here in After is not the result one would expect.

Sure, it's more complex, yes the lyrics are more well-written, but the music took a nosedive in quality. My feelings are the same for Failures for Gods as they both suffer the same issues: piss-poor production and a lack of musicality pure and simple. Riffs are truly uninteresting if you can make any of them out through the haze of "production" and the off-kilter time signatures are annoying rather than interesting. I feel that Immolation tried too much to advance their sound and lost their sense of songwriting along the way. Some songs are better than others as one would expect in any album (Christ's Cage being the standout), but they are all a far cry from Dawn of Possession or their magnum opus Close to a World Below.

The one positive thing that can be said for HiA and FfG is that they do show a music path from OSDM towards the hellish atmosphere in CtaWB and in that regard they are important. Clearly my opinion is in the minority, but I felt that it needed to be said.
Immolation Failures for Gods
See my thoughts on Here in After for a full explanation of my rating.

I think the songwriting (on the first half of the album at least) started to improve on this album, but the production fell off a cliff which kind of cancels out the positive vibes I had for Failures for Gods. The second-half of the album will make you fall asleep due to how repetitive and bland it is.

The lyrics on this record declined in quality as well. The chant in No Jesus, No Beast is the most childish shit I've ever heard.
Morbid Angel Illud Divinum Insanus
I understand what Morbid Angel was trying to go for with this album, but it clearly sounds like an attempt to utilize a new musical influence without first being aware of what makes it interesting. The result is a strange mish-mash of ideas and mediocre lyrics. Better luck next time guys.
Sleep Token Take Me Back to Eden
If The Chainsmokers threw in some breakdowns and hardcore vocals for clout.
