| Cheerful spring/summertime vibes
This is first real time that the UK has had a prolonged period of warm, sunny weather and it feels so good! One of the things I love the most about England is that as soon as there’s a tiny bit of sun, everyone goes crazy. No half-measures. So to celebrate my new-found cheerfulness, here’s a list full of spring/summertime vibes. Check em’ out if you haven’t. | 1 | | John Talabot Fin
For me, John Talabot’s music is summer. This album’s three years old now, but still sounds amazing. Balearic beat? Deep House? All that matters is that this moves! | 2 | | New Order Substance
A truly amazing band. This is music guaranteed to brighten up your life. I really need to start bumping their studio albums, but this is such a neat compilation. Always on constant rotation when the sun starts shinning. | 3 | | Toro Y Moi Causers of This
Chillwave might be dead, but what does it matter. This album really does sound great when the sun’s out. This, ‘Underneath the Pine’, and ‘Anything in Return’ are all great spring/summer listens. Chaz really is a good songwriter, although it’s a shame that his recent album didn’t do anything for me. | 4 | | Baths Cerulean
A few of the songs here actually remind me a little bit of The Avalanches' album ‘Since I Left You’ (an album that deserves to be on everyone’s summer playlist), mainly on account of their warm, playful summer vibes. A great one for chilling outside. | 5 | | Currensy Pilot Talk III
There isn’t anything here that will be new or come as a surprise to fans of Spitta. Nevertheless, it’s nicely executed and maintains a steady, chilled vibe throughout. A welcome addition to an already great series. | 6 | | Mssingno Mssingno
This is actually one of my favourite EPs of recent years and definitely deserves more attention. Operating in some hazy area in-between grime and trap, while also taking cues from US rap and R&B (seriously, check out his Brandy bootleg Brandy Flip), Mssingno’s tracks are strangely intimate, but also really fun. What impresses me most about Mssingno’s music is the restraint his tracks show; they never explode into some crazy juiced-up madness, even though you kind of expect them to. Very nice. | 7 | | Kelis Kaleidoscope
I’ve got to get some R&B in here somewhere. Produced by the Neptunes, the beats here really do bang - but in a subtle kind of way (they never overshadow the singer). Kelis is great, and this, her debut album, features some quality songs. Generally, I prefer my R&B to have an overarching sound/theme that ties everything together (rather than an album that just sounds like a collection of random songs) and this delivers. | 8 | | Jefre Cantu-Ledesma Love is a Stream
Firstly, look at THAT album art. That is exactly how I feel. But in all seriousness this is a lovely album, full of dreamy soundscapes and pleasant drone. Great stuff! | 9 | | Steely Dan Can't Buy A Thrill
Damn, I really love Steely Dan. Not only are they fantastic songwriters and great musicians, they also make superb albums. This one’s their first and really does jam. Songs like Do It Again, Dirty Work and Only A Fool Would Say That are stupendous. ‘Aja’ remains my favourite Steely album and it really is amazing, check that out too! | 10 | | Marlena Shaw Anthology
Soul doesn’t get bumped enough here on Sputnik and that’s a real shame as it’s a great genre. Marlena is a real goddess. This compilation album features many of her well known songs (including California Soul), and is also pretty varied. The instrumentation is fantastic too! Perfect for spring mornings and afternoons. | 11 | | Destroyer Destroyer's Rubies
Until very recently, ‘Kaputt’ was my favourite Destroyer record. Now it’s ‘Destroyer’s Rubies’. Dan Bejar strikes me as model student, one that has diligently listened to, and been inspired by, the finest songwriters that the last five decades has had to offer. ‘Rubies’ is his response. Grandiose, intimate, charming, sincere, ‘Destroyer’s Rubies’ is all those things and more. Simply a wonderful record! | 12 | | Digable Planets Blowout Comb
Following the critical acclaim surrounding Kendrick’s latest album, ‘Jazz Rap’ is a term I’ve seen flying around a lot. Here’s an album from one of the finest purveyors of the sub-genre. Check out their debut ‘Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space)’ as well. | 13 | | George Duke The Aura Will Prevail
Wow, where to begin with this influential musician? Unfortunately, George Duke passed away a couple of years ago, leaving a massive legacy. This album’s really great; George is an absolute wizard on the keys. Full of lush fusion-orientated jazz, including two songs written/co-written by Frank Zappa, this album’s a real joy! | |
