Ryan Hemsworth Last Words |
Infusing electronic music with hip-hop, I find Ryan Hemsworth's tracks here to be interesting, imaginative, and, at various points, captivating. Perhaps most interesting is that Ryan's music has a melancholy, almost mournful, feel to it, best exemplified by the delicate 'Colour & Movement' and the stunning coda of 'Overthinking'. My main problem with Last Words however, is that in comparison to Ryan's original tracks the four remixes at the end of the EP are somewhat uninspiring. Shlohmo's woozy remix of 'Colour & Movement' and Supreme Cuts' airy remix of 'Overthinking' are both pleasant without adding much to the EP, while I find Baauer's trap remix of 'Slurring' and Sam Tiba and Canblaster's 'Charly's Mask Shop' to be pretty boring. All in all, Ryan Hemsworth's songs on Last Words are great and deserved to be listened to. Just do not expect much from the accompanying remixes. |

Travis Scott Owl Pharaoh |
Owl Pharaoh suffers from being inconsistent. While Travis Scott has unquestionable talent as a producer, lyrically he's still finding his feet. Other criticisms would be that Scott borrows too much from his influences, of which Kanye West and Kid Cudi are the most obvious, and that the mixtape would benefit from greater cohesiveness. Nevertheless, there are plenty of positives here and I'm looking forward to hearing what Scott does next as he continues to develop his sound. |

Zayn Mind of Mine |
While critics can (rightly) find fault with Mind of Mine's lack of originality and the adolescent nature of Zayn's lyrics, one cannot deny the sheer beauty of the production that can be found here. Working closely with producer Malay (Frank Ocean), Mind of Mine succeeds in fusing together elements from several genres to create a cohesive downbeat sound, one that feels distinctly personal. While it would be nice to hear Zayn do more, vocally, to assert himself, the dream-like haziness of his vocals really adds to the album's sound. Ultimately then, Mind of Mine is a solid, enjoyable album that showcases a young artist with a lot of promise. I will be watching his career with interest. |
