09.18.16 | Have you even told them about this? Tell them if you haven't. Also Listen to a few songs they consider good "Christian contemporary." And don't forget dynamics. They are essential in gospel/soul/jazz/Christian music.
Also, don't close off to their ideas. I've learned that closing off can lead to complete dysfunctionality in a band.
If drumming there becomes a pain for you just quit, honestly. Don't do something you don't enjoy.
2 is really awesome, btw. |
miketunneyiscool123
09.18.16 | Damn dude. I played at my church for 4 years before quitting due to "creative differences." That plus the constant changes. |
50iL
09.18.16 | Churches over here don't have bands. Kinda sucks but then I remember I'm an atheist lol. Also, I prefer to play thrash and learn Gene Holgan's principles and technique rather than playing a slow genre. |
miketunneyiscool123
09.18.16 | Oh I'm actually a Catholic, but I don't play anymore because they stopped doing upbeat music despite how many people were into it. But oh well I guess. |
50iL
09.18.16 | Yeah upbeat gospel is actually pretty cool, I'll give you that. |
miketunneyiscool123
09.18.16 | Upbeat gospel is pretty cool for drum fills and stuff. I wish my church could do that stuff again. I know it would draw in more people. |

09.18.16 | Dude just fucking quit |
50iL
09.18.16 | @mike the thing that's also really cool with funk fills is that you can do them in an incredibly melodic way that compliments the music SO much. You can also use them as really smooth transitions that also pack a punch. |

09.18.16 | Communication is key. I would absolutely let them know that you're a visual learner, and that's just what works for you. Hopefully the bandleader or whoever can get you the charts you need, or at least steer you in the right direction. |
BlazinBlitzer
09.18.16 | Didn't expect all the replies. Damn.
I decided that this'll probably be my last performance there for about 3 months, so that way I can start training audibly by myself.
I forgot to mention that it's no ones fault that I'm unhappy with the band. It's just that me and them are different musicians with different ideals, and I guess I just can't work with their ideas well enough to stick around for much longer.
Low key: I did a blast beat at church one time, and the other members just shook their head in shame, pretty much. |
Deathconscious
09.18.16 | your first mistake was joining a church band. |
BlazinBlitzer
09.18.16 | I joined for two reasons:
1. I could actually perform the drums at least somewhere (I live in the rural area, where hardly anyone plays instruments, so unless if a couple of my friends learned to play instruments, there was no chance of playing in any band).
2. Whenever the guitarist and bassist were busy, no one played the drums, so I felt really bad. That basically made me start playing. |

09.18.16 | Quit/break up the church/band over said creative differences and start your own church/band. Put out a couple of critically acclaimed solo albums before hitting a creative slump.
Then in two decades or so reunite with your original church/band and make a gazillion jesus dollars.
It's the rock n roll way. |

09.18.16 | @sitar Or just Varg it and burn the church down, problem solved. |
SitruK6
09.18.16 | In all seriousness, just quit the band and join another one (or create a new one).
Also you should definitely start training your ears. It's important to be able to learn visually, but in the end if you can't actually hear what's truly going on than you lose half of what's so great in playing music imo. |
SitruK6
09.18.16 | Also not having a trained ear is just so limiting in my experience. |
Space Jester
09.18.16 | I play at church too brah, it can be frustrating at some points because I'm easily the most skilled musician there and our piano player gets flustered if the song is too fast and our guitarist is super insecure because he only has ever played at home by himself. It usually all comes together pretty well in the end though. I will say that I agree with the training your ear part, I can read rhythms on sheet music but I can't imagine not being able to play based on what I hear. Sounds incredibly frustrating lol |
Storm In A Teacup
09.18.16 | My orchestra teacher used to get frustrated that he could teach only 35 out of 40 how to tune by ear. I was one of the 5 who couldn't. Now I can get in standard tuning by ear simply by playing the intro to Rise Against's "Swing Life Away". So easy to get in tune by just making that sound right. |
SitruK6
09.18.16 | Ear training is a bit frustrating at first, once it starts to develope you'll see/hear a massive difference in how you approach things.
Anyone can learn how to tune (unless you're tone deaf which i highly doubt) |
OldCrime
09.18.16 | People still go to church? |
SitarHero
09.18.16 | On a more serious note: what the other guys have said about ear training is true. Music is (usually) something you play and are supposed to play while listening to what's going on around you, especially when you play in a rock band.
Sheet music and charts and memorization is good, but rock and gospel (by extension) are living things. Tempos change, parts get missed, solos get extended. In my experience, the problem with most young musicians is that they only listen to themselves when they play. They're so focused on playing all the notes they're supposed to that they miss the beauty and truth in what's actually being created.
My advice:
1. Stick with your band. Learn from the experience. Step out of your self-imposed box as an artist. Improvise. Make mistakes. Improve.
2. Even when you're jamming with Porcupine Tree and Tool don't just try to replicate what Harrison and Carey are doing. FEEL what they're doing. Put your own stamp on it. Drummers often have way more leeway to do this than the melodic instrumentalists. Revel in it. Feel the music, feel the spaces between the notes. Don't just play the notes, put feel and accent into the notes themselves.
3. Record all your jam sessions. I've been in tons of bands and collectives over the years, but until I started recording everything I didn't have a true grasp of exactly how good/bad things sounded and what worked/didn't work/worked better. Trust me on this. A simple phone recording can tell you where you accidentally half-timed a tempo that works amazingly with the other instruments or where a fill is completely off-time and clunky. |

09.18.16 | I even asked at practice last night that I could record the performances, so I can practice at home and play the songs right myself. They seemed to agree to that. |
