Indie Indulgence |
1 | | Unrest Imperial ffrr
Cherry Cream On - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M2iRTe6-Tg
I don’t understand how the overtly sexual lyrics can make for a song so serene and innocent. I guess it’s the delivery? Whatever, I just want to listen to this on repeat forever. |
2 | | Howling Bells Howling Bells
The Bell Hit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOIfPSvzAD4
I hear some Velvet Underground influence but thats kinda off topic, anyway, these guys have a stellar, intoxicating chorus here that’s helped by the amazing singer, Juanita Stein. |
3 | | Guided by Voices Bee Thousand
Into the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB7r6Xo5Vqw
Hardcore UFO's - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEE3vjFakjo
Gold Star For Robot Boy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmO48lOXVe4
Like Cherry Cream On, these songs deliver pure joy and innocence to my brain and set me at ease. |
4 | | Yo La Tengo I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
Stockholm Syndrome - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiVwYSc5ElY
Got into this album near the anniversary (4/22/97) by coincidence. Stellar album all the way thru, this is one of my favorite tracks. Listening to YLT is like an elevated form of musical escapism, they make my day so much better. |
5 | | The American Analog Set Know By Heart
The Kindness Of Strangers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maXd4ltM8og
Vibraphones and brushed drums on this album kind of give me this mature, relaxed feel. This track is boldly written, launching into that beautiful refrain, just like that. Love the writing and the feel good vibes (pun intended). |
6 | | Atlas Sound Parallax
Praying Man - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86tUQ_F9FXQ
After the first few bars of harmonica, when the bass kicks back in. That is such a cathartic, RIGHTEOUS sound. What a keeper! I’m glad to have checked this guy’s solo output out (it’s Bradford Cox, singer of Deerhunter). |
7 | | Thinking Fellers Local 282 The Funeral Pudding
23 Kings Crossing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7Juj7WnZu4
Such a fun, cinematic hook! And that B section, mann… |
8 | | Kylie Minogue Impossible Princess
I Don't Need Anyone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ADKbt7OHto
Alright so you’re right, this isn’t an indie rock track but it kinda scratches the same itch for me. That flute is something else. Total Sonic 06 vibes! |
9 | | Helvetia Headless Machine of the Heart
Headless Machine of the Heart - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RgXL06Gpoc
There may come a time when I stop being a big cheerleader for this band but I keep finding reasons to come back. This album, and this track in particular, feels like an endless whirl pool that pulls me deeper and deeper. |
10 | | Silkworm Italian Platinum
Is She a Sign - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_roGMrl6tb8
What a fun catchy little song. Has that perfect balance going on that only a songwriting veteran could pull off. And it’s so sweet! |
11 | | Cornelius Sensuous
Omstart - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbKFSAE4thY
Music - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u76XEmLdWz0
The panning, the random sound fx, the crisp production all sounds so science experiment-y but this album embraces the weird “very on the nose about this being recorded in a studio” vibe to such an extent that it’s awe inspiring. Not to mention very pretty. |
12 | | Kylie Minogue Fever
Listspo was getting a Kylie Minogue track onto a list about indie rock. Please comment your fav and/or rec me stuff! My next review will probably be one of these albums because I haven't listened to much else lately. |
