03.28.16 | I'm no audiophile, but I've got a cool Panasonic stereo system I'm very happy with for playing my CDs or stuff via aux at home. Sounds really good paired with the Sony Walkman clear audio feature they've got on it too, as a side note. No idea how it works but it makes a huge difference. System gives me decent control over the EQ too and I've got it set how I like it.
Sennheiser HD215 circumaural headphones, some decent Sony noise isolating earphones for out and about if I need 'em.
My guitar rig needs a lot of upgrading but I've currently got a PRS SE Tim Mahoney sig as my main guitar, paired with a small fender amp. |

03.28.16 | Headphone set-up: Sennheiser HD 650 through Schiit Magni 2 Uber + Modi 2 Uber. Super happy with the headphones they sound incredible.. pricey but totally worth it.
Speakers: Audioengine A5+ coupled with the Audioengine S8 subwoofer. Really happy with these as well.. probably one of the best desktop speaker combos for under $1000. They can get super loud as well which is nice. |

03.28.16 | I've got a Technics sc-dv290 stereo which i've had since new for 12 years now and it still sounds awesome. I've got a set of Sennheiser dj style headphones that i wear at home if my daughter is in bed and a cheap set of sennheiser ear buds for when i'm out of the house. Really want to invest in some Audio Technica headphones at some point though. |

03.28.16 | @JWT you definitely don't need an amp for 598's, I have those as well and they sound great without one. Even just through an iPhone they sound very good. |

03.28.16 | Hey, thank you for answers people!
@Kubrick - that's nice pair of speakers, very powerful in terms of amount of sound for its price range and size.
@Sevengill - nice to see someone likes Sehns HD6. When i bought these, i was so troubled with their sound, everything sounded a lot worse than cheaper HD598 i already had, but after some time i was totally impressed by them, DAT BASS! I know, the big boys from Sehn is HD650, as someone mentioned here already, those headphones dont give a f**** about even higher priced competitors, but those HD6 are mighty one if connected to a good source, unlike 598, which are not so sensitive to output source.
@trve agree bro, cant understand how people use this disgusting piece of an ear wax. Have you seen of some of the buds can cost around the same price as high-end acoustics? Crazy...
@JWT - I have HD 598, ofc they sound a bit better if connected to amp (dont forget i have 20kg piece of tube), but they are not so selective when it comes to source, unlike HD6 or 650's.

AKG x Massdrop K7XX
Hifiman HE 400i
Audeze LCD 2 (Fazor)
DAC: SMSL M8 (Looking to upgrade to a Schiit Bifrost this summer), Audioengine D1 (DAC/Amp combo so really easy to set up. Wonderful with low impedance gear)
Amp: JDS Labs O2 (for Solid State), still deciding which tube model I'm going to go for but it looks like either the Bravo Ocean or Vali 2 and possibly the Darkvoice or Schiit Lyr 2 if my budget is suitable at the time of purchase.
Usually use iTunes with 320 Kbps rips paired with Amarra sQ+ to bypass the apparent up sampling occurring on vanilla iTunes when not using a DAC/Amp combo. However, Tidal is my go to streaming service.
Also use Senn Momentum M2 over ears as my portable pair alongside iTunes Match off my phone as the source of my music itself. Expecting IGG funded DAP to arrive next month which will be my first of those devices |

You should check out MusicBee tbh. It has FLAC support, device syncing, can upmix to 5.1 and resample to 192k, and is customizable to a fault. you can even make it look like iTunes if you really wanted to. |

03.29.16 | I've heard really good things about MusicBee, but the fact that it is not Mac compatible keeps me from being able to utilize it.
However Amarra pretty much covers all my sound tweaking needs |

03.29.16 | 220kbps and above is fine for me. there really isnt a big difference between that and 320, and i dont think flac makes much of a difference either. maybe if youre listening to music on something very high end it will, but my 90$ headphones dont show me the difference. |
Oceandrowned
03.31.16 | @AdolfChrist Yeah, but on high end acoustic you are pretty much forced to flacs or original cd's (better option). 320kb sounds too flat for high-ends, it either stereo detail goes downhill, or player tries to decode shit in weird way and from this any high quality stereo will start losing musical coherence.
I had lots of troubles with MacOS interfering with DAC, it basically has its own built in euqalizer and its not flat-response one (which is critical). I end up using Win7 on Mac through boot-camp and foobar2000 with WASAPI output driver. Anyone, who is using Windows, give it a shot, this will improve the sound A LOT. Just try it if you dont believe me. Foobar is very small program, just google wasapi plugin which will install itself. It has far better quality, you will not recognize your music after using it a bit.
For those who are intersted, here is the manual http://www.head-fi.org/t/463890/how-do-i-setup-foobar-with-wasapi-i-see-no-option-in-output |

05.08.16 | Nothing that fancy here. Still have an old Technics HD51 stereo system which I got 16 years ago, so I must be rather happy with it. Been using a set of Sennheiser HD 380 Pro headphones for a few years now, mostly during later hours for music and movies. Nice clean and also rich audio reproduction and very comfortable.
As for mp3s, there's two reasons why I use 192 kbps. HD space forced me to have smaller files years back and (didn't) don't want to spend tons of hours upgrading the greater part of them to 320. The other reason, well they sound just fine to me. Honestly, there's virtually no difference between 192 and 320 kbps. Sounds crazy, I know. If anything, when comparing a 192 kbps file and switching to the stereo (CD), the latter only has a VERY slight higher (clearer) top. So why not save some space. |

Laid-back listening session: marantz tt5005 turntable coupled with marantz pm5005 amp with Audiotechnica ath-ad1000x open air headphones.
When I want to listen in my bed, I extend the headphone cable using an audioquest golden gate extension cable.
On-the-go: Sony Walkman A-845 with Klipsch X10 in-ear monitors.

09.18.16 | I'm using DT 770 (80ohms) through an Alesis Io2 Express DAC and no amp (sad).
Foobar2000 is the way to go if you want a great customizable listening experience, in my opinion. I'm using it with TB ISone plug in (which simulates audio from a speaker setup right in your headphones), and it does wonders for even non-lossless songs.
What cans do you prefer, Oceandrowned? |
Oceandrowned
09.19.16 | @Masochist Thank for reply. The foobar is way to go for proper listening, it's so full of customization, and lots of good/working plug-ins for it. I personally using WASAPI exlusive mode for my Electrocompaniet ECD-2 DAC(it can play 24bit/192khz which is a bliss). It removes any interference from Windows, and makes the direct data stream to DAC. It's really working very well, and i spent tons of time trying to make other players/MacOS to work properly with high end DAC with no luck. I recently bought new pair of speakers, the ATC SCM-40MK2 and oh boy, those deliver. Terrifying speakers, considering how easy those play extreme music, with such precision, that you head becomes dizzy, too much information comes to your brain. Anyone who is not in to extreme metal run in agony from my room ;). I also used special acoustic foam all around the room, this negates any "still waves" and echoes. Bass traps in corners help a lot too. From my experience, this is the most crazy "hobby" i ever had. It drains money from you like that sexy blonde, it eats your time like nothing, and even when everything works properly, you want some more. But then, after hard day, you come home, jam some Mastodon, and then the scream "THE HERO OF THE GODS" comes all over you like it has no apparent source or you are inside some crystal, and your ego is completely happy. Like heroin happy. |

09.19.16 | For casual listening I have my phone and my Media Devil earbuds, get the job done but they are fairly low end earphones. Otherwise I have BeyerDynamic T90s (around £300 over ears) for more serious listening that I oft hook up to my Rega RP1 record player with a pre-amp and all that jazz. |
Cyberduck
09.19.16 | I don't like to burst Oceandrowned's bubble here, but that he could distinguish 320 mp3s from FLAC in an ABX listening test is highly unlikely, even less so for 24bit/192khz and CD audio, where failure will be guaranteed with proper resampling. Also psychoacoustic finetuning of lossy formats like mp3 is usually done in acoustically treated environments, so better listening gear would make it rather harder than easier to spot the differences.
As for myself, I only use old Sony earbuds for originally 10€. |

09.19.16 | @Cyberduck, Psychoacoustic do really work in my room, that was the whole idea behind setup. I can make some photos of the room if you want. There is noticable diff between mp3's and a good flac (not all flacs are properly ripped, so good mp3 will sound better), especially when it comes to low end. Bass is so subtle on this acoustic, any kind of lossy data can make it sound non-natural and very artificial. At the same time 2000 kbps flac is really destinguishable between the same high quality mp3 rip. I had people like you as my guests, and for me its apparent that i listen to somethng lossy, i spent too many hours in front of good acoustics. Anyway i dont see someone spending so much money on this, especially if the person dont hear the diff between acoustics or high end audio gear. But thats your opinion and i know where its coming from. All my friends call me absolute weirdo for this hobby, and rightfully so. |
Cyberduck
09.19.16 | If you think you can really hear the difference, just download the Foobar ABX component and find out for yourself. A guessing probability below 5% would validate your claims, anything above only a placebo effect. Btw, if your CD rips contain errors, this should be noticeable as obvious glitches and not a somehow "degraded" sound, similar to bad lossy encodings. I'm still using EAC to be safe, though. |
