Asia XXX |
30 years into their career, Asia release their best rounded album yet. There's a lot of growth power, and it can count on great atmosphere backed by splendid artwork. One of the more unique AOR albums of recent years, sprinkled with light prog-like touches. Even the bonus tracks are good! Unfortunately this is one of those annoying albums where a bonus track has its place inside the standard tracklist. "Reno (Silver and Gold)" was pivotal for my growing appreciation for XXX, because it brought more variety to the platter and felt right at home with the album's flow.rMy highlights: "Tomorrow the World", "Al Gatto Nero", "Reno (Silver and Gold)", "Ghost of a Chance" |

Toto Toto XIV |
The child born from The Seventh One and Mindfields, XIV is a pleasant listen for the old fan that wants a proof of Toto being still alive and quite kicking. I prefer the heavier road they took with Falling In Between, but this is still masterfully played -and it's nice to hear Williams again. Favorite tracks: "Running Out Of Time", "21st Century Blues", "Chinatown" and "Great Expectations", the proggier one. The classy bonus track "Bend" is also notable. The ballads bring this a bit down, but that's often part of the game with this band.
EDIT: It's a grower for sure, hard 3.5. Could have been more with another rocker in the middle. |

Turbowolf The Free Life |
Seems they wanted to step up their game everywhere. Tight, unpredictable songs, improved vocal melodies, short and sweet runtime... and obviously infectious riffs from front to back. Quirky and full of curveballs. A madly catchy album with plenty of balls, at times instrumentally it sounds almost apocalyptic ("Last Three Clues"' chorus) and wasteland-esque. The t/t is particularly excellent and features all the things I opened this paragraph with (except it's the longest song), not to mention that it flows seamlessly into the surprisingly emotive "Concluder". I'm so glad that they finally delivered the great album I knew they had in them. Now, let's see what comes. Favorite songs: "No No No", "Very Bad", "Last Three Clues", "The Free Life", "Concluder", + everything else to a smaller degree really. Check this out. |

A simple EP that contains the song "Comandante" off Sentimentale, plus the electronic remixes of "Once We Were" and "La notte" (originally on Sentimentale too). For what it is, it's a respectable release. I especially like the remix of "La notte", which now becomes shorter and very bouncy. Also it's like 3$ on Bandcamp. |
Korn The Paradigm Shift |
Here Korn sound more like seasoned musicians having fun in the studio (and the documentary is proof) without the limitations of trying to satisfy a particular fanbase. It's not the usual bleak Korn sound. The soaring chorus of Mass Hysteria is a perfect example, or the tender section in Punishment Time, or the "crazy shaman" chanting in Lullaby for a Sadist, the mechanical-sounding bridge of What We Do... there are memorable moments distributed in every song. How to say it, it sounds like Korn, yes, but an adult version of the band. One that isn't afraid to let some instrumental colour slip into the angst. Perhaps, one thing I can say is that in a sense there are too many brief interesting moments sprinkled throughout, in the sense that most of them -as welcomed as they are- should have been developed more. Like the thrashy harsh bit in Paranoid and Aroused for example; the harsh vocals in general feel rushed because they are always brief and scattered. Anyhow this is easily one of their most solid albums, and for me easily the best since Issues (Serenity included). |
Lancer Second Storm |
Good stuff for a jam but originality is doubtful. Just a random example: intro riff to "Steelbreaker" may put off some people because it sounds a lot like Maiden's "Be Quick Or Be Dead". Some choruses are too squared. My highlight would be the 10 minutes long prog epic "Aton", a really strong track. |

It doesn't break any ground but it's built to be as enjoyable as possible, succeeding. Not complex but it isn't painfully straightforward either, and it works nicely as a full listen as it fulfilled greatly the task of accompanying my movements for quite some days. The title track, "Afraid of the Night" and "Quiet Rhapsody" are probably my favorites, especially the title track which chorus is just irresistible. On the other hand, "Your Dreams Won't Die" can be -predictably- a bit boring (lovely bridge though!). Still, Catley with his 68 years offers a strong vocal performance that saves the day. |

It does indeed achieve one thing: make the album sound more metal. However, the price paid is a sound that is also flatter and more plastic. Busy moments like the snare-heavy parts of "Sell It to the World" sound annoyingly flat and the songs sound at times muffled (just listen to the drums in "Divided"...). Still, the remix deserves credit for drawing me to this album, which turns out isn't bad at all, albeit stiff and formulaic. Ultimately I'd say there isn't a winner between this and the original, it depends on how gross you find modern productions to be. Props for the new artwork, though they could have at least kept the original font. Favorites: "I Am Nothing", "Mouth", "Illumination", "Control", "Never Again". |

Solid album, with an aggressive and epic feeling with an industrial flavour. "Panzarmarsch", "Raptor" and "Innan loven faller" are probably the best tracks, with "Raptor" being my personal favourite. It's also nice to hear a few guitar solos in some songs. Nothing really special, but they do sound good to hear. Take "Brander" as an example. |

Don't be fooled by the two singles, which also open the album. This is the closer the band have been to their classic sound in, well, more than a decade. In fact, The Ninth Hour can be seen as the sequel to Reckoning Night, which it also recalls through "White Pearl, Black Oceans Part II". Also, a few tracks see double bass galloping really close to albums like Silence, see "Rise a Night" for reference. All in all I don't think this is a particularly impressive album (try to digest all of its 62 minutes and tell me), but surely a step in a direction that can appeal to every kind of fan. |
