Aesmah Walking Off The Horizon
This is one of the greatest Melodic Death Metal albums of all time. I heard Stained Souls
what seems like ages ago and ever since I've had my eye on this album. Of course I wasn't
hyping much because it could have been the best song on the album. I didn't know what to
expect, but of course had high hopes. And this easily surpassed my wildest expectations.
Every track is an epic in it's own right with the songwriting to back it up. In some ways
they are beating Insomnium and Be'lakor at their own game. Anyone with any interest in
the genre owes it to themselves to hear this because it encapsulates most of the best
aspects of the genre: expansive songwriting, explosive riffing, beautiful atmosphere, and
that emotional duality of magnificent encouragement and heartache.

Mature, tasteful, passionate, hard hitting in all the right places, delicate and soulful in all the right places. The range between the most delicate parts and the heavy riffs is impressive. The lead work is inventive and the vocals are so smooth. Softer songs like "End of Silence" and "Departure" just may be my favorites, which is surprising to me, but despite no harsh vocals aside from a scream on the final track the album brings the heaviness as well. An album in this style with less strong songwriting could run the risk of songs blending together but that isn't the case here. This is a classy release all around that creates a complete experience with zero filler and plenty of replay value.

Yes! This is exactly the new album I am hoping to stumble upon every week. I'm glad they got an album cover worthy of the music to make me have to listen. And much like the cover suggests, this album is a colorful rainbow of beautiful noise. A hodge podge, yet perfectly sorted. How they are able to sound so goofy and at the same time so genuinely heartwarming is a marvel, along with how they move between so many different styles seamlessly and with all the elements feeling fully realized. It sounds like a joke and yet is masterful and feels sincere which makes it have a transcendent quality. There's also a lot of subtly mind blowing technicality going on all in the name of good songwriting. This album is the joy of life encapsulated.

Loving this. Sure you lose a little bit of the high
range from the first singer, but I'm liking the
richer and more confident tone of Conti. This album
is in no way a retread. I grew to appreciate the mix
on Heroes of Mighty Magic but it still always felt
like it held it back a bit. On this album they
managed to maintain the amazing amount of
orchestrations but not sacrifice any of the other
parts. In fact, I think this production is a
terrific example of how these parts can all be
blended to not sacrifice anything. I would certainly
say a valid criticism is that they have some
cornerstones of their composing that are somewhat
repeated in each song, but with further listens each
song brings something unique to the table. This time
there are songs set in the desert, green valleys,
festivals, the ocean, space, winter, and even one
with strong Asian influence; and all these different
settings manage to be conveyed confidently. Stand
out moments include the banger that is Thundersword,
Long Live the King's sheer joy, the beautiful
celebration that is the Winds of Wisdom instrumental
section, and the extended face melting shred in the
epic 12 minute closer. The guitar leads from Lynd
are especially unbelievable and fresh and it's worth
checking out for that alone. It sounds like the
magic beam of a wizard's staff put into musical
form. All in all this is sort of a love it or hate
it thing but if it's something you are into, here it
is. Twilight Force's first two albums do provide
their own flavor, but Dawn of Dragonstar is Twilight
Force at their most fully realized.

I liked their latest album quite a bit (especially the first 5 tracks are awesome. I'll be honest with you, I only really liked a handful of songs from their first 5 albums. This on the other hand...well this is pure gold. What spectacular music. Mostly nothing to blow you away arrangement wise, but the execution is superb. Very beautiful and captivating all the way through. Now I am very interested to see what's in store in their next few albums.

I don't know how much more you could want from an
album in this particular style. Super
dark and brutal, breakdowns that feel like they are
pushing the envelope, good pacing,
and I was getting Fleshgod Apocalypse vibes at
points which is great to me. The
compositions are complex and proggy enough to make
one feel like there this is a time
skewing quality to them, with discernible patterns
but still plenty to surprise and make
the head spin. The tone of the instruments is unique
and intriguing.
Also the Jordan Peterson feature on "Being" was
pretty amazing. I'm glad Peterson has
decided to go metal.

Manticora To Kill to Live to Kill
I saw these guys live with Persefone. This is a top level band. The songwriting, the stage presence, the interesting and varied song structures and melodies, the unique tone, these guys possess it all. These are seasoned veterans that don't get enough credit but have been providing excellent "power metal", so to speak, that is more aggressive and progressive than what the genre is known for. The tone and composition is blended nicely between the unconventional and the practical and makes for satisfying and fresh music. To me it evokes feelings of military conquest, which interestingly, the singer said he was not going for. Nonetheless, this band is a treat to see live and has enough amazing guitar work and melody and impressive overall composition and accessibility for any metal fan.

A Sense of Gravity Travail
A Sense of Gravity Atrament
This album cements the idea that this is a standout band. Rather than keeping the jazz
elements to certain instrumental melodies or passages, jazz is completely a part of the
band's identity. From the softest sections to the most crushing, everything feels done
with a master hand. Although not every experimentation is fully satisfying, listening
through the entire album certainly is, and adds value to what came before. Don't let the
somewhat generic cover art fool you, this is anything but. One of the best prog metal
albums of 2016.

I've never heard Angra before but this album is amazing. Those vocals, that guitar
work, the composition, the stylistic depth, it all has that technically proficient
edge. It has that sweet blend of virtuosity and high quality songwriting to the point
that the songwriting is actually one of the most impressive parts. Every song has
something different to offer, the album is crafted in a satisfying way, the choruses
are all excellent and ear catching. The progressive flourishes add an impressive depth.
The mind bending guitar work and choruses make the replay value high. A showcase of an
album.

Breaking Benjamin Ember
Their best album. Definitely their heaviest and maybe their catchiest at the same time. rThis is the album I always knew they could make. Nearly every song on this album brings ra new look for the band, meaning, yea it still sounds very much like Breaking Benjamin, rbut while some of their other material could fairly be labeled as weaker versions of rsome of their better songs, Ember stands well on it's own. I was really a big fan of rthe first two albums. Where Dark Before Dawn felt somewhat stale, this rejuvenates my rlove for the band. So stoked this turned out as well as I could imagine Breaking rBenjamin in 2018.

It gets a little redundant in the second half. It doesn't help that there is a strange lack of guitar leads in the second half as well. But the first half of this album is some of the best flowing prog metalcore I've heard. Toxic Earth and Cold Spots are bangers for sure. There are lots of memorable moments on this album. It reminds me how good prog metalcore can be when done right.
Byzantine To Release Is to Resolve
This album is incredible and I believe it is some of the best metal to come out in years. The restraint and clarity of composition is terrific. Each song is varied and melodic. rThere is a fair bit a clean vocals on this. Only a couple of the tracks go for a straight heavy vox approach. None of the clean vox feel forced; they have very unique arrangements and elevate the music, making the crushing sections hit even harder. rThe track list is perfected as well giving the album great pacing. rIf you are a fan of quality music, do yourself a favor and listen to this. r

It's a cool melodic death metal album and a lot of fun to listen to. "Foundation", r"Majesty rand Silence" and "Frontiers" are welcomed as some more fantastic tracks from this band. The repic feel and cohesive story of the last two albums is completely gone though. This feels rmore like just a collection of tracks, which isn't really a big criticism, but does make it rfail to reach the grandiose of "Beyond" and "New World Shadows". While most of the band's rother material was structured but still had plenty of surprises as the music went on, here rthe song structures are so basic that you can predict what is coming most every time. The rtracks are very nicely polished and practical in their writing, giving you just enough for a rnice memorable jam. "Majesty and Silence" is the only track that strays from the rpredictable approach. It's just a little flatter in general. All that said, this is still a rreally fun listen and highly raccessible. The motivational lyrics and great melodic feels of Omnium rGatherum still come rthrough. The band also maintains its great catchy quality on Grey Heavens. As a MASSIVE fan rof the band I know they can do better seeing as their last three albums are melodeath rmasterpieces in my opinion. In the end, there is a lot of fun to be had on Grey Heavens rdespite somewhat less depth than we may have come to expect from Omnium Gatherum.

Melodic Death Metal by far on the brutal side of the spectrum. Tons of energy and interesting songs. Interesting and intrusive synths (in the best way possible). This sounds avant-garde in a way but still provides the massive amount of riffs and feel you can expect from melodic death metal. A lot of great stuff to chew on here.

Ripping album. If you can get past some sameness in some riffs and rhythms every track on here has something great to offer. It reminds me of a more accessible Vektor. Love the production. The guitars are so clear while still sounding organic.

It's really good but when the guitar isn't doing one of those insane guitar leads you can
barley hear it, meaning nothing in the way of "riffs". It's like an orchestral album that
happens to have guitar and drum accompaniment, not the other way around. Nonetheless, it
is a great lengthy album with every song bringing something unique to the table. The mix
isn't preferable and the music is sometimes hard to follow but that doesn't stop this
from surely being some of the best power metal to be released this year.

Nice blend of new and old school death metal. Such a tumultuous whirlwind of riffs is
created at points it is something to behold. Tracks like The Path of the Totalitarian,
Coerced Evolution, and Soul-Sick Nation are undeniable goodness. There are still some
slight chinks in these death-metaller's armour, but this and Obsolescence are their best
imo. Obsolescence had a much crisper, clean production and possibly more substance and
tighter execution, but this is may be their most concise album.

There is plenty of variety in this melodic post metal/black metal/folk metal album. It
strikes a balance between the genres that feels real and natural. Very cohesive,
immediate and dreamy, conjuring up parallel feelings of contentment, sorrow, and
perseverance that fans of the genres know a quality release can provide. Simply pure
clean vox, deep growls, simple soaring guitar melodies
and soft passages all flow nicely with a keen sense of overall song dynamics. This is one
that shouldn't be missed by any fan of any of the three genres, and one I will keep
coming back to.

Upbeat clean sung prog pop. I don't hear many bands trying to do this style and when I do I expect it to be inconsistent. But with this album the great riffs and melodies just keep coming!
Fallensun The Wake Of The Fall
Fallujah Dreamless
They have progressed their sound, but done so in a conservative way. The music comes across
as a full on explosion of transcendent emotion, but due to the narrow amount of arrangements
used and the monotone vocals it can lose context. The album can lose one's attention easily
and it can all start to blend together, but some of this is a side effect of the general
tone the band is going for and not exactly an outright flaw. It is best enjoyed with
completely undivided attention. Nonetheless, on the next album I would like to see the
songwriting improve.
"Abandon" is skippable and its use of the same rhythmic riff slightly devalues the far
superior "Scar Queen". The same riff is basically used again near the end of "Dreamless" but
is a somewhat interesting callback. It also feels like the best of the album is over after
"Amber Gaze". This is still a very unique and interesting experience, hence the 3.5/5, and
this is a great release for this point in Fallujah's career. But they will certainly need to
do something different for the next release. Using the darker side to a greater and more
effective extent could see this band create their best album yet. The very brief moments
that the band takes on a darker death metal sound without the atmospherics become some of
the most memorable moments on the album, and exploring this side more could give the songs
more memorable flow and make moments hit harder, whether it be a brutal section, or the
explosions of melodicism that have made the band so special.

majestic. Clear production.

I haven't listened to the band much but I liked Restoration. Initiate and Red Giant are skippable, but the rest is great. 1985, The Architect, and The Endless Knot are particularly awesome. The group gets a little too ambient for my taste. I think they could benefit from being bombastic more often because that is when they are at their best IMO. rGreat record that may not fully please metal fans but should be heard by all prog fans.

Kind of amateurish vocals, but that is the only weakness. Has the same slightly eclectic vibe rthat most metalcore has. If you like that then this is likely one of the best releases of the year rfor you. Beautiful sections kind of Dreamshade-like. Atmospheric layers abound. Interesting rsongwriting. Super brutal bouncy riffs. Super great and clear production. All packed into a nice rcohesive package.

Wow this band is evolving at a startling rate. With this pleasingly introspective release they rival the big names in the genre. There is aggression and technicality but the tone of the album prioritizes satisfying the mind intellectually and making you think, which is why I got into this genre in the first place. Genuinely intriguing rhythms and arrangements come at regular rates and each track offers a largely different experience. The album is also definitely a grower. On first listen the pacing of the album was unexpected and I was hoping for some more heaviness. But on repeated listens it was easier to grasp the pacing and almost every track has its moments where it goes in hard with the aggression. Unprocessed has an impressive variety of arrangements, from the more groovy bits, to the atmospheric and thought provoking, to the ear catching melodies, and the ability to go in heavy at the right times. This album is an exceptional example of many of the best aspects of the genre.

It's pretty damn good, better than the singles made me believe. I'm satisfied with how
this worked out. It's their best album.
Tale of the Sunbladers, Cosmic Space Commando Base, and especially the goddamn
magnificent Astral Assassin Shark Attack are awesome. Sure the album sounds a little
typical but it has that extra glossy punch and absurdity that is a lot of fun. The story
is even made clear on the final track. These guys have their tongue firmly in cheek and
it's a blast. Way better than the new Dragonforce which felt like it was trying to do a
similar thing.

Ok, I'm not well versed on Whitesnake's past material, but I would not be surprised one
bit if this was their best album in a LONG LONG time. This thing just rocks from
beginning to end, with superb pacing with songs seemingly written with their place in the
album in mind. There's lots of variety, from your straight up high octane rockers, the
couple smokey and brooding tracks, the optimistic up beat pop, the power ballad, swinging
blues, and the final two tracks ending the album on an ambitious note with the acoustic
tune and the tonality shifting of the finale. It is amazing how fresh and inspired
Whitesnake sound in 2019. And yes, the riffs and lead guitar work do not disappoint.

The level of artistry becomes very noticeable and often rthey may do something tech death like or lay down heavy groove sections and good melodies. Nothing rcute about this. Noise metal done right.

Aether Realm Redneck Vikings From Hell
A great album but disappointing after the unbelievably amazing Tarot. Like they should be as good as ever really but something is off. This album's title track feels like a diluted version of the Tarot title track with some humor thrown in. Lean Into the Wind is a diluted version of The Devil. She's Back is a literal retread of Swampwitch which can feel like a treat for the fans but doesn't feel as endearing as it should given my urge for something fresher as the album progresses. The super fast fade out just as the shredding gets great at the end of Slave to The Riff leaves you wanting more but in a way where you think there really should have been more, something you would expect after the lengthy instrumental sections of tarot. One Hollow Word starts well but I want some more from the second half of the track. The 11 minute instrumental doesn't get the interesting until about halfway in, but it does end strong. There is less shredding overall for sure. Perhaps they really did try to make a more accessible sound for their major label debut. All that said, the track Hunger is a phenomenal banger that is a massive highlight and shows the potential the band can reach with this new sound. And TMHC is almost Tarot quality as well. It's their best production by far. To be fair, at the end of the day, I think this is only an album that suffers when compared to some of their other material. On its own merit it is a blast. Their guitar talent remains some of the best I've heard. The unique magical vibe their music creates remains.r

Interesting album and definitely a must listen at least once for prog fans. But I actually rthink that it would take many awhile to realize this was the same band if they didn't know rbefore listening. rI don't think fans of the band will just eat this up. The band has always rbeen hilarious but in a jaw dropping and extremely entertaining way. I always likened the rband to an extended and compressed nuclear explosion but that is gone (except for a couple rsections). You always had to either accept them for their brutality and cheekiness or go raway. The cheekiness is now almost all of the music instead of smaller sections or rundertones. Now with all these super odd clean vocals and drawn out mid tempo beats (some of rwhich are damn groovy) I bet it makes lots of longtime fans confused. I just don't see it rhaving as broad of an appeal. Though it isn't a face blast like their other albums so some rwho probably couldn't stand their other material will like it more for that. rAbout half the ralbum is good/great stuff. There is a lot of intricate and amazing stuff here. "Famine Wolf" r"Turn on the Darkness" and to a slightly lesser extent "The Coma Machine" and "The Ectopic rScroll". But it goes downhill big time with "Rapid Calm" and "Memory Palace". Two tracks I rdon't see myself coming back to soon. At least the last two tracks are a solid end to the ralbum.rI do think the screams on this album especially on the stronger tracks are some of the best rand most dynamic they have done.

Power metal. The verses often forgettable. But some of the choruses on this album are among
the best in the genre. Very solid instrumentation. Nice orchestral work. The tracklist
alternates a bit between the better and more forgettable tracks. Somewhere in the middle as
far as showiness, which works great for the album. Great production. Overall a terrific
listen for fans of the genre.

Showing much more deathcore and prog influence than rprevious releases, "Calling From a rDream" shows the band taking an interesting rdirection with mixed results. The rband is at their best here when they get into a rsweet meaty groove or are consistently rthrowing aggressive and interesting riffs at your rface which doesn't happen much of this album.rThe extremelyrprevalent, not well executed female rvocals will certainly be a point of contention. The rmajority of the time they are used, rall the metal stops for more ambient soft sections rto focus on the female vocals. They rwork best when used more rhythmically and naturally rin the flow of the songs which rhappens just a few times on the album. Decentrtracks include "The Shore of Rising rShadows" and "Pulse of the Mountain's Heart". "Upon rWhirling Winds" and "Falling Into rMalice" are interesting in their rharmonic shapeshifting with the later rperhaps being my favorite track on rthe album. However, aside from the tracks I have rmentioned and the solid opener, the rother 4 tracks here are the epitome mediocre. rStill, this could be recommended to rsomeone who wants to hear something different in rtech-death. Not even close to "A rNever Ending Cycle of Atonement" though.

Seems like some might say that the album didn't turn out to be as bad as Drink About It and Flexin suggested, but I'm the opposite. I loved the singles, and I thought this might make a bigger statement then it ends up making. It's a solid album and mostly has an R&B, Pop with heavy guitars crossover thing going on, with screams only showing up in a few spots. Guitars sound punchy and defined in the best way possible for this style. I don't feel the desire to do repeated full listens like I hoped I would but about half to 2/3 of the album is great.

The Color Clear is an exceptional album that shows an impressive range of instrumentation
and tones. It's pretty shocking they went so far in the other direction with such a
linear sound here. The singles on this sounded more intriguing when I didn't know the
whole album was going to be that same sound. This is at its worst on tracks like
Isolation and Marionette which back to back basically come across as one big non-event.
Dismal, Empathy, Seven Stages, Help, and Ghost are great on here. I especially like
Dismal, which tastefully plays with its catchy repeating motif. When these guys are
actually giving me some riffing or dynamic parts it's satisfying. Their blunt lyrics are
still pretty refreshing, if maybe only for being shockingly straightforward. The
breakdowns on The Color Clear (my favorite part of that album) are better than anything
on this album though, and given that this is an album centered around them, that's too
bad.

These guys are at their best when they are doing something melodic, creative, and some
really sick riffs/breakdowns, all while having some great songwriting flow. Unfortunately
this album has a lot more of the spastic freakout sections and not much quality
interesting songwriting. The spastic stuff is so prevalent that it prevents flow and
there aren't many good riffs to speak of. This songwriting is pretty weak compared to
what they showed before. The production is also less clear and punchy.
They sound like they are stuck in second gear for a lot of this.
Easily their worst album, but still some good tracks. Oh well.

I'm very disappointed by this. The first album is a chilling, intimate release packed
with thoughtful dynamics and ear catching melody. It had tracks full
of quiet, intimate, interesting melodies and harmonies from multiple guitars. And the
way parts blended into each other was superb. Strumming was only used in like 3-4 spots
on the album and for emphasis. It's so good I will definitely still be putting it on
from time to time for the rest of my life. With this album I'm finding very little to
hold on to. It sounds like glorified instrumental folk rock. Long periods of strumming
with not much in the way of melody, and when there is melody it is usually the simplest
of the simple: walking steadily through scale degrees. There are some brief moments of
brilliance spread about but not much sustained. So yea this is a very different album
from the first. I appreciate some of new instrumentation that comes in from time to
time but I'm having a hard time having this keep my attention. I'll give this a few
more spins past my 5, but as of now The Trial may be the only song I would add to an
Ulvesang playlist.

It feels like they thought they could make a more minimal record and pass it off as being more mature, but for the most part this is just really boring. Love the choreography and they have some banging tracks in their discography but yea. There are 4 decent/solid songs on here at most.
