Dan Campbell ist ein Ausnahmetalent. Das stellt er sowohl in seinem künstlerischen Schaffen als Sänger von The Wonder Years, aber vor allem in Bezug auf sein Nebenbandprojekt Aaron West & The Roaring Twenties unter Beweis.
Bei „Routine Maintenance“ handelt es sich um den zugehörigen Albumzweitling. Und der sticht nicht mehr ganz so sehr ins Herz wie das Debüt „We Don't Have Each Other“. Auch nicht so sehr wie die Nachfolger-EP „Bittersweet“. Das ist jedoch nicht den nach wie vor mitreißenden Folk-Klängen mit Emo-Einschlag geschuldet. Sondern eher der Tatsache, dass der fiktive Charakter Aaron West langsam aber sicher zu sich selbst findet. Dass er allmählich mit der Vergangenheit und den Erinnerungen an seine Ex-Frau Frieden schließt und nun neuen Herausforderungen entgegenblickt.
Alle diese inhaltlichen Entwicklungen führen eben zu weniger Herzschmerz und mehr hoffnungsvoller Euphorie auf „Routine Maintenance“.
Abgesehen davon bleiben uns aber auch auf dieser Platte wunderschön sinnbildliche Lyrics wie etwa „We used to smoke on the fire escape, now we just smoke in the living room“ erhalten. |

Es war ein gutes Jahr für die Emo-Szene. Nicht
nur veröffentlichten Mineral nach zwanzig Jahren
Funkstille endlich wieder neues Material, auch
die Genre-Pioniere American Football machten mit
ihrer „LP3“ auf sich aufmerksam.
Was beide Bands hier gleichermaßen geschafft
haben, ist die Verletzlichkeit und Intensität
ihrer früheren Werke aufzugreifen und sie an die
heutigen Gegebenheiten anzupassen.
Denn nicht nur die Bandmitglieder sind reifer
geworden, sondern auch die damalige Hörerschaft.
Und so gehen sie eben alle auf Elternabende, sie
bezahlen pünktlich ihre Miete oder schließen
Haushaltsversicherungen ab.
Genau diese besagte Reife spiegelt sich im Sound
der „LP3“ wider, die uns auf sehr sanfte, sehr
ruhige und fast schon hypnotisierende Weise in
ihren Bann zieht.
Das ist natürlich auch der glasklaren Produktion
geschuldet, bei der alle Soundkomponenten perfekt
aufeinander abgestimmt wirken. Hier zeigt sich
ein Sinnbild für eine nun abgeklärtere
Gefühlswelt, die jedoch mit völlig neuen
Problemsituationen kollidiert. Das spiegelt sich
wiederum in der wehmütigen Textpassage „I used to
struggle in my youth, now I'm used to struggling
for two“ wider. |

| For me this album's all about being a kid in the 2000s, barspins and ollies, shows, moshing, catchy sing-along tunes, searching for your own Identity through music. But It's also so punkrock-esque with Its political lyrics ("Red Flag", "Worker bees"), so gut-wrenching when it intends to be ("Surrender", "Pins and needles") and it makes you want to rage and punch with joy at times ("Devil in a midnight mass", "This Suffering"). |

| Der düstere Sound in Kombination mit den geflüsterten Vocals, diesen teils sehr melancholischen Songtexten - all das wirkt eher so, als hätten wir es hier mit einem Indie-Artist zu tun. Tatsächlich ist Billie Eilish in diesem Jahr zu einem der größten Weltstars im Musikbusiness aufgestiegen. Und die bekannteste Single „Bad Guy“ ist ja auch im Kern ein Pop-Song - extrem eingängig und sehr reduziert im Songwriting, trotz der düsteren Aufmachung. Nicht umsonst wird das Ding in den Mainstream-Radiosendern rauf und runter gespielt. Doch gerade diese Ambivalenz macht Billie Eilish so interessant und lässt ihre Musik frisch und unverbraucht wirken - erst recht im Bereich des Massenmusikgeschmacks. |

Fühlt sich innerhalb der deutschen Hip-Hop-Szene ähnlich innovativ an wie damals „XOXO“ von Casper.
Live eine ziemliche Wucht. Ein ganz besonderer Moment ergab sich bei einem Stromausfall am Konzert im WUK Wien. Mit spontan organisierter Beleuchtung, einer Mini-Akkubox und einem Handy ausgestattet, performte Felix Kummer zusammen mit der Crowd „Bei dir“. Hieraus entstand einer der vielleicht intimsten Konzertmomente im Jahr 2019.
Tatsächlich greift KUMMER auch in seinen Songtexten sehr intime Themen auf (etwa in „Bei dir“ oder „9010“). Andererseits spiegeln die Texte häufig auch topaktuelle Zeitgeistthemen wider und setzen sich mit diesen kritisch auseinander. Sei es nun die neoliberale Kollegah-Philosophie über „Alphatiere“ und die „Gewinner“ der Gesellschaft, die in „Nicht die Musik“ beleuchtet wird. Oder etwa der Song „Wie viel ist dein Outfit wert“, der im weitesten Sinne von Stigmatisierung in Verbindung mit Armut handelt, wenn es zum Beispiel heißt: „Du würdest armen Menschen ja zur Seite stehen, wenn sie es schaffen würden, einfach bisschen geiler auszusehen“.
Insgesamt ist dieser ernste, persönliche und emotionale Zugang etwas, das mir in der sehr ironischen Musik von Kraftklub immer gefehlt hat. Was dazu führte, dass ich vom Projekt KUMMER in diesem Jahr umso mehr angetan war. |

Als eingefleischter Frank-Turner-Fanboy fühlte sich dieses Album nach dem weitgehend unerträglichen „Be More Kind“ wie ein kleines, verspätetes Trostpflaster an.
Während beim letzten Langspieler so manches abenteuerliche Stilexperiment (I look at you, „Little Changes“) einfach nicht aufging, ist hier nun das Gegenteil der Fall: Wir bekommen klassische Folk-Tunes („Jinny Bingham's Ghost“), supereingängige Rock-Songs („The Lioness“), aber auch countryesque Stücke („The Death of Dora Hand“) geboten, die allesamt Spaß machen.
Dazu kommt noch das ehrenwerte Konzept, das dem Album zu Grunde liegt: Frank Turner widmet sich in jedem der dreizehn Songs einer besonderen weiblichen Persönlichkeit der Geschichte. Dabei schafft er es weitgehend, den emotionalen Kern der Geschichten in seine Songs hineinzuarbeiten, sodass sich „No Man's Land“ selten wie eine Geschichtsstunde in der Schule, sondern öfter wie ein waschechtes Frank-Turner-Album anfühlt. |

| Muse Will of the People |
Muse offer a lot on "Will Of The People". With influences ranging from hard rock to synth pop to metal and so forth the
album can be fairly entertaining at times. Plus, Matthew Bellamy's vocal performance is as impressive as ever. Some
parts of the lyrics might be a bit on-the-nose or direct or cringy, other parts have multiple facets, for instance the piano-
ballad "Ghosts," which appears to be dedicated to those who died during the pandemic, but also works as a typical
break-up song. "Liberation" might be great as a Queen homage, but as a Muse tune in its own right it seems rather
unoriginal. Then there's the track "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween," which might work as a fun song to play at a
halloween party, but not as an exploration of domestic violence, as it is explained in one particular interview. All in all
though, the album is a fun ride, especially for fans of Muse. |
