| I'm not gonna lie, I absolutely love this EP. This is Bad Astronaut's debut release, and unlike their 2002 masterpiece Houston, We Have A Drinking Problem, Acrophobe favors a harder, stripped-down, more pop-punkish approach not unsimilar to Joey Cape's main gig, Lagwagon. However, the surprising depth and instrumentation present here make this a pop-punk gem quite unlike any others. Musically, it covers all the bases here - the power-pop, Hammond-laced "Grey Suits" sits right next to the soothing synth drums and backing piano of "Quiet", while the raging "Logan's Run" (complete with amazing drumming from the late Derrick Plourde) and angst-ridden cover of Elliot Smith's "Needle In The Hay" shows that BA wasn't afraid to turn up and let it rip. Joey Cape's vox, and especially his guitar work, is also surprisingly great, favoring loud, open-chord voicings and heavily melodic leads. Go buy it now, heathen. |
