This album is so very unique. It really is an oddity, Ginger Baker on drums, and sounding even better than he did in Cream. It begins with a perfect opening track, and ends just as well. It's kind of like if Cream were an early 90's stoner/desert rock band. I can't recommend this enough. It's really never left my listening rotation.

It's a strange, synthesized, and somewhat indie pop style sound. It has the dark and poetic lyrics David Bazan is known for, and the simple drumming done so tastefully thanks to Frank Lenz of Starflyer 59. It's very much a unique record, which is why I feel it earns high marks. I have posted a couple Pedro the Lion reviews a few years ago on here, but have generally faded my fandom for Bazan in his recent work, leaving his roots of simplicity. However, the work here remains, and is a great inspiration to myself in musical creativity. I can't say many will understand why I feel it deserves a 4.5, but understandably so; There is little to compare this album with, even in Bazan's own catalog. These recordings, to me, demonstrate a less is more approach. One voice, two instruments, 10 tracks of quality music.

I have been practically obsessed with this album as of recent. I don't know of another band in the Stoner Rock genre right now with as unique of a fingerprint in their sound. They tend to focus on creating an atmosphere in most songs, which may lend to the idea they are Psychedelic influenced, but I wouldn't necessarily call them a Psychedelic Rock band. At times you can imagine this is what Matt Pike would record without as much distortion and screaming and with a delay pedal, but I think even this doesn't do them justice in describing their sound. This is just some of the best Stoner Rock i've come across in a long, long time.

This album is from what I consider Polyvinyl Record's finest time. Their late 90's roster has some of my favorite indie music, period. Highlights on this album, for me, are "Planetary" which leads into "Broken Radio." Much of this album has Caithlin De Marrais giving the vocals her all, to the point of being out of tune at times. This isn't detrimental to the music, as it lends to the overall tone of despair, while other songs lend to a tone of hope with softness in her voice. Granted, I will admit this isn't a 4.0 album, but those two tracks I mentioned are very heavily weighed, as they are some of my favorite 90's emo. I recommend a listen if you enjoy Christie Front Drive or Mineral.

Sounds like something that could have been released in the early 1980's, but that is more of a compliment than anything. If you like old school doom metal, this is one album to check out. Great writing, though somewhat subdued in creativity at times. I am one who appreciates the minimalistic drumming. I was torn between a 3.5 and 4. It doesn't bring anything new, it just does the sound so well. I must say though, The Raven is the standout track - Absolutely fantastic.
