Sure, maybe Gill was the only original "Gangster" left by this point, but my god is this a solid set. Sounds fantastic, too, album-quality recording - and in fact, a lot of the less popular material sounds much better here than on record. Singer may not be Jon King, but he does a hell of a job on these tunes and brings a considerable amount of the kind of sharp-tongued "piss & vinegar" we always loved from these guys. |

Suede A New Morning |
disappointed with how grossly underrated this record is, even on here where I expected it to at least have some more retrospectively appreciative ratings for it, all things consideredrstill though, this is a different sort of outing for Suede; more soothing and, for lack of better word, pretty than their previous records. The production, songs, and performances go hand in hand. The sound of this record is lush and yet is fully capable of biting when it needs to bite (Streetlife, Beautiful Loser, Obsessions, etc.)rMaybe the problem is people come to this record expecting another Dog Man Star or Coming Up - this is more a record for fans of The Verve and Blur's more calm & introspective material, not neccesarily those looking for more of Brett Anderson's distinct whine over gritty guitars |
