This is precisely how an EP should be made. Every song is worthwhile, not just some meager attempt to whet our appetites whilst waiting for the full-length album to come out. 198d is arguably the band's best work.

Besides blatantly ripping off Jeff Magnum, this is probably the most tolerable and least self-absorbed album this band has made thus far. Good job guys...-ish.

The Kicks Kicks
In the wake of Weezer's failure that was Make Believe, there needs to be another band to fill those shoes. Along comes The Kicks. They sound quite like Weezer (mainly because of the singer), but add enough to their music to keep from looking like a cheap rip off.
This music is not meant to be taken too seriously. Hell, no powerpop is. Possibly the best music to just drive to that I can imagine. The musicianship is solid and it works for the genre, but the lack of any real solos or too much variation between songs slightly brings down an otherwise great album. Recommended for any fan of the Blue/Green Album Weezer, or anybody into fun alterna-rock.

When listening to singular songs, it is easy to be in awe at the amazing musicality and production qualities behind this record. What Sufjan failed to notice, however, is that his album is too samey and boring to let me, or many people actually listen to the album all the way through.

One of my favorite bands make a truly embarrassing record. Almost each songs leaves an uninspired feeling, making this album a pure chore to listen to, especially when one can expect so much more. The best advice I can give is to download Taking Back Control and pretend that the whole album was that awesome.
