Chances are, If someone ever holds a gun to my head and demands I name my favorite song ever I will probably say "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". Its an absolutely perfect song, Johnny Marr's deseptivaly simple strumming, perhaps Morrissey's finest melodies, and lyrics that are somehow both heartbreaking and hilarious. The thing is, the rest of The Queen Is Dead completly matchs that songs unatural brilliance. The Smith's offered up their very finest jangle pop with "Cemetary Gates" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again", they taught a whole generation how to make fun of a countries leader with the title track, and they wrote on the the greatest break up songs of all time with "I Know Its Over". Hell, they even wrote a song called "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" that is about just what the title sugests, but is still good. |
