Edging out Aenima in terms of brilliance, the band all seems to be at their peek on this release. Maynard James Keenan delivers his most captivating and beautiful vocal performance on songs like "Ticks and Leeches", "Lateralus" and the amazing scream of "The Grudge". The band's ability to show variation is what sets this album apart from others and Tool's sublime ability to mix the melodic with enough heaviness to satisfy the metal heads is astounding. It starts off promisingly with the impressive "Vicarious" and continues on in a lacklustre fashion towards the epic "10'000 days" which manages to create an eerie feeling never achieved by Tool's music. But as the album goes on, one can feel that the band ran out of ideas and added songs like "Lost Keys" and "Vigniti Tres" just to keep their reputation for long records.
