Cathis Ord Demo
One of the best things I heard back in 2008. This melodic doom/progressive one-man band has talent to match his influences. Both 2 tracks are slowly building epics filled with atmosphere. The vocals also work very well although they aren't very prominent.
Only real downside for me is the lack of real drum tracks. The programmed drums are ok, but JR's apparent lack of experience of drumming is evident. Still, a very good atmospheric record for the rainy day. Any fan of doom and dark progressive metal should keep "Cathis Ord" in their mind.

Great album overall with varying strong tracks. The album definetly doesn't grow boring as there is anything from techno to piano ballads to even rocking songs. My favourite songs being Spark, Black Dove, Northern Lad and Hotel.

Porcupine Tree In Absentia
Not the best album by Porcupine Tree, but has some fantastic tracks such as Trains and The Sound of Muzak. The second half of the album is much more mellow and atmospheric but doesn't strike as impressively as the first side.
Still, the positives overcome the negatives. Instrument work is fantastic.

The best Tori Amos release since Scarlet's Walk. She's making a good use of the classical pieces these songs are worked around. Not for everyone, but worth trying out even if you were disappointed with most of her efforts during the past decade.

I have a similiar story to what spamwise said. I had heard good things of this pioneer of progressive metal so I just bought the album at a local store. Not everything here strikes me, but the albums has some great tracks, especially the opener "Queen of Reich". If you are used to the high vocals which were in some fashion in the 80s, you'll like the singer too. To me, his performances vary from fantastic to slightly irritating.
Nevertheless, a good collection of songs, but I think you'd be better off getting one of their best albums. "Operation Mindcrime" for example.
