AFI The Art of Drowning

LoveHateHero White Lies
Possibly one of the greatest albums I have ever listened to in my life. With the great leads and riffs created by Myk and Kevin, each song sounds vibrant and full of life and not some filler song dragging off the tail of a great one. Also the greatest part about this excellent guitar duo is the abundant use of solos in a post-hardcore album. This is not normally seen, but on this album the solos could quite possibly fit onto a metal album. The bass on this album while not heard greatly is still great with nice fills heard counteracting very well with the guitars. The fills aren't the most complex but are a nice surprise at time for example towards the end of Red Dress. The drumming was one of the biggest surprises to me on the album. Scott utilizes his whole kit in almost every song and while at the same time pumping out great double bass patterns. Finally, Pierrick's vocals may be the turning point for some. I find his voice to have a very nice tone and he is able to change into a scream from a melodic voice very nicely and plus his scream really isn't too bad (check out She Puts the Ho in Homewrecker). The higher backup vocals accent Pierrick's voice very well and never get to an annoying high that some bands get to ever so often. To me this album has no flaws and is the best record I have listened to in a long time while it is not the most original it still knocks a lot of other present day post-hardcore and pop-punk out of the water.

Avenged Sevenfold City of Evil
City of Evil was a broad change from Avenged Sevenfold's second album, Waking the Fallen. Gone are the strong, demanding screams of M. Shadows, and in their place is a higher, raspy singing. To me his singing isn't horrible, I've heard worse. But its the combination with the background singing of Synyster and Zacky that seem to give his voice a horrible sound. The deeper screams contrasted the background vocals very nicely, but now it is all but too annoying. The guitars however are still top notch playing excellent solos and inspiring leads. But to me its all played too much in harmony on songs with a normal song structure such as Beast and the Harlot and Bat Country. When they do break the mold the harmonies sound great for they are not reminiscent if the other songs for example Sidewinder. The bass is audible and this a plus, but for some reason Johny Christ does not lay down as many nice fills that could be heard somewhat on Waking the Fallen but primarily on Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. Drums are excellent as plenty of fills and excellent double bass are employed by The Rev. This band has great potential its just a few poorly judged decisions and a few things that should have been capitalized on that could have made this album 10 times better.

Instead of taking the potential they had on Apologies, Miss May I chooses to completely rip AILD with generic song structures, unmemorable choruses, and mindless riffing that's recycled about 5 times over. However, Levi's screams are much more solid and improved on this outing. It's a shame, I had hopes for this band.
