Casualties of Cool Casualties of Cool
There's no way in hell I could write a coherent review of this and put across what I've just heard. But I'm utterly blown away. Beautiful.
Devin Townsend Project By A Thread: Live in London 2011
Truly excellent live performances of the first four DTP albums, in some cases even
surpassing the originals in my opinion. Devin's excellent showmanship also comes across,
making it one of the best live performances I've ever seen/heard.
Leprous Pitfalls
Sonata Arctica Reckoning Night
A Power Metal masterpiece. Whilst differing slightly from their older style of the first 3 albums, you won't care when listening through this album. It's catchy, very well-written, and it's an album you will listen to again and again and again.rSongs such as Don't Say a Word (With over 200 listens in my library), to White Pearl, Black Oceans... (An epic 8-minute tale), Reckoning Night will slowly sneak up on you, grab you by the throat, and won't let go for weeks, even months to come.

4.5 superb
Agalloch The Mantle
Ayreon The Human Equation
I think the number of times I keep coming back to this album and giving its entire hour and 40 minute length a spin says it all.rVery well written, with some very talented musicians on board, this is worth every penny.
Ayreon The Theory of Everything
Behemoth The Satanist
Blind Guardian A Night at the Opera
Blind Guardian at their very best. Every song is pretty much outstanding. This is definitely worth buying.
Devin Townsend Ocean Machine: Biomech
Devin Townsend Project Addicted
Leprous Bilateral
Nightwish Showtime, Storytime
Pain of Salvation In the Passing Light of Day
Power Quest Blood Alliance
Protest the Hero Palimpsest
Sabaton The Art of War
It's just, well, Sabaton. The swedish band are really on form for the 10 tracks they provide, and they're all pretty damn good - as long as you ignore the irritating woman occasionally spurting out Sun Tzu quotes throughout.
Serj Tankian Elect the Dead
A truly fantastic album by Ex-SOAD singer Serj. He brought out this one and only album with amazingly catchy tracks on, all created around the same political-style lyricism as System did previously - just don't take it too seriously. This album I simply could not stop listening to for a long time. If you're a fan of his sound, you really should be buying this.rA few disappointing songs on the album, along with a few less-than-decent riffs and singing sections bring this rating down a little. Recommended tracks include Empty Walls and Feed Us - give them a listen before you buy.
Sonata Arctica The Days of Grays
Sonata Arctica have changed again, in a way not everyone will like.
After a few listens, even, it seems a little plain, and not the Sonata Arctica I'm used to. But a lot of the tracks really shine out if you keep on with it. The Days of Grays is a record that you'll steadily keep on coming back to. Not often. But when you have your library on random, and a Days of Grays track comes up, you can't help but smile.
Woods of Ypres Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light

4.0 excellent
Amon Amarth Fate of Norns
Amon Amarth Versus the World
Amon Amarth Twilight of the Thunder God
This is Amon Amarth at their peak of melodic but still crushing melodic death metal.rThis album's stood the test of time and I still keep coming back to it, pretty much every track on it is pretty catchy and there's a minimum of filler.rIf you want to start listening to Amon Amarth, I can recommend no better album.
Assemblage 23 Meta
Avantasia Ghostlights
Ayreon Into the Electric Castle
Ayreon 01011001
BABYMETAL BABYMETAL
Blind Guardian Nightfall in Middle-Earth
Blind Guardian Beyond the Red Mirror
Cain's Offering Gather the Faithful
Cain's Offering Stormcrow
Dark Tranquillity Fiction
Very listenable, very melodic death metal. Dark Tranquillity are consistent in their style, the likes of which I'd never heard before and really enjoyed.
Considering I listen to very few growling vocals, I could quite easily follow what was being sung, and Mikael Stanne has a surprisingly good clean voice, demonstrated at the start of Misery's Crown.
Darkher Realms
Devin Townsend Project Ki
Devin Townsend Project Deconstruction
Dragonland Under the Grey Banner
Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory

Gloryhammer Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards
Halestorm The Strange Case Of...
In Flames Come Clarity
My first foray into the world of Death Metal (or indeed In Flames). I downloaded it after a pleasant listen to Take This Life and Crawl Through Knives.
My expectations of such a band, playing what such such 'heavy' music, were quite low. But those expectations were blown away after a few listens to the album.
Whilst I can't compare this album to others by In Flames (since I haven't heard any), listening to Come Clarity certainly opened my eyes, and I'll be checking out some of their other work with a lot higher expectations.
In Flames A Sense of Purpose
Kamelot Ghost Opera
Kamelot Haven
Leprous Tall Poppy Syndrome
Leprous The Congregation
Masterplan Masterplan
Masterplan have really come out fighting with their first album. They provide a very consistent sound, and Jorn Lande's voice provides a welcome change from others which you hear around the Power Metal genre - a little harsh but still clear.
It's hard to pick out favourites on an album so well made - but Enlighten Me and Crystal Night both provide excellent listens. Try them out, and if you like them, odds on you'll love the rest of the album. Well deserving of a good rating.
Orphaned Land Mabool (The Story of the Three Sons...)
Power Quest Magic Never Dies
Another fantastically consistent, melodic release from PQ. Yet more choruses to get stuck in
your head... for days... and days...
Just be prepared to accept Power Metal lyrics and themes.
Power Quest Master Of Illusion
Protest the Hero Volition
Rotting Christ Theogonia
Sabaton Primo Victoria
Sabaton's style of Power Metal heavily themed with lyrics about war takes a little bit of getting used to for the new listener such as myself. Once I did, I found plenty of catchy riffs, choruses, and bits of singing. The songs on the album were very consistent in their quality, and I really couldn't name a BAD track. If you're into Power Metal, I would highly recommend checking this out.
Sabaton Coat of Arms
Sonata Arctica Ecliptica
Sonata Arctica Silence
Sonata Arctica Winterheart's Guild
Sonata Arctica For the Sake of Revenge
I have to agree with Ed Watson's review in that whilst For the Sake of Revenge won't blow you away, it is a very passable listen for Sonata Arctica fans - and for me, listening to this blew a new breath of life into old songs such as FullMoon and Misplaced which I had previously listened to death.
Sonata Arctica Pariah's Child
Star One Victims of the Modern Age
Strapping Young Lad 1994–2006 Chaos Years
Theocracy As the World Bleeds
Turisas Stand Up and Fight
Turisas 2013
VNV Nation Judgement
VNV Nation don't always hit it just right on Judgement, but when they do, it's breathtaking.

3.5 great
Amorphis Silent Waters
Amorphis Skyforger
I don't quite know what it is about this album. It's metal, but at the same time, it's very... calm.
What makes for excellent listening at first pales fairly quickly, but it's still worth a listen.
Arcane Known/Learned
Avenged Sevenfold The Stage
Be'lakor Of Breath and Bone
Blind Guardian Imaginations from the Other Side
Blind Guardian A Twist in the Myth
When I first downloaded this album, I listened to This Will Never End. The fantastic pace and energy of this track sets the scene for, well, the rest of the album.
A Twist in the Myth is a very consistent power metal sound, and there's not one track that will let you down - and the lyrics (at least, at first listen) are remarkably free from cheese for the pidgeon hole I had put Blind Guardian in before I bought an album.
Well worth the listen.
Dark Tranquillity We Are the Void
Dark Tranquillity Atoma

Nightwish Imaginaerum
Run the Jewels Run the Jewels
Serj Tankian Harakiri
Sonata Arctica Unia
Sonata Arctica take their first step into the area of more Progressive Metal. The change has hit everyone quite hard, and I don't think it shines quite as brightly as their previous offerings - it's certianly nowhere near as good as 2004's Reckoning Night.
It's... good. But just good.
Sonata Arctica Live in Finland
System of a Down Steal This Album!
One of System's best albums, in my opinion. Whilst it may not be what you're used to, if you're a fan, I heartily recommend checking this out.

Amon Amarth Surtur Rising
Amorphis Eclipse
Blind Guardian At the Edge of Time
Celesty Vendetta
Dark Tranquillity Character
Falconer Falconer
Falconer Chapters from a Vale Forlorn
I have to agree with what was said in the main review that this album is good - but not great.
I was torn between giving this a 3 or a 3.5, since there are truly some great songs on this album, such as The Clarion Call, Enter the Glade, or the more ballad-esque Portals of Light.
But even with those great tracks, it just hasn't grabbed me by the throat and made me want to keep listening.
It's alright. Pick it up if you're a Power metal fan. If you're new to the genre, I'd suggest looking to another artist to get you hooked.
In Flames Clayman
Opeth Blackwater Park
Sonata Arctica Stones Grow Her Name
Stratovarius Polaris
A more than passable album from a seemingly very long-standing band. This album provides the usual mix of fast, more powerful songs (see Deep Unknown, Falling Star) with slower ballad-esque songs such as Somehow Precious.
This album is just... good. Not great. Just good. The singer's voice sometimes I enjoy and others just irritates my ears. For this as my first Stratovarius purchase, they seem to be somewhat an aquired taste.
The Birthday Massacre Walking With Strangers
The Prodigy The Day Is My Enemy

2.5 average
Alestorm Black Sails at Midnight
Apocalyptica Worlds Collide
Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold
Axenstar The Final Requiem
Children of Bodom Follow the Reaper
Dimmu Borgir Abrahadabra
Firewind The Premonition
Despite what I think is a very valient attempt to bring out a solid Power Metal album, this one falls short. After around 4 listens through the album, I really can't say I'm feeling it.
Whilst I can't say anything's particularly BAD about the album, I find many of the songs a little bland and difficult to get into - Head up High and Mercenary Man being a few very notable exceptions - and these tracks saved the album from a poorer rating.
Maybe it'll grow on me. But I'm doubtful.
Halestorm Into the Wild Life
In Flames Reroute to Remain
Kamelot Poetry for the Poisoned
Sonata Arctica The Ninth Hour
Stratovarius Elysium
Symphony X Paradise Lost

2.0 poor
Angra Temple of Shadows
I bought this album in a haze of good reviews. But to me, this album just wasn't what I expected. It wasn't the Power Metal I thought I was going to get - there isn't a lot of power.
Although there are a few decent tracks, this album was a bit of a disappointment. Maybe I haven't listened to it enough, but I'm not entirely sure I want to tread it's depths to find out.
Blood Stain Child Mozaiq
Flogging Molly Within a Mile of Home
Serj Tankian Imperfect Harmonies

1.5 very poor
Sonata Arctica Talviyo
