5.0 classic
Darkthrone Transilvanian Hunger
The single most important black metal album ever. Every song is a masterclass on riffing and shrieking. Everything in this album is perfect. Not a single track drags due to repetition; The drumming is relentless and the production suits magically the music contained.
The songs are at the same time cold and raw; pure black metal misantropy and hypnotically droning.
Words cannot describe the supernatural feeling of hearing this, late at night, with headphones in a forest; believe me, I've tried it.
This is one of the best records not only in black metal, but in metal in general.
Also, try to find the translated lyrics on the interents; they're EXCELENT.
Drive Like Jehu Yank Crime
John Coltrane Ascension
This is Coltrane at his most experimental and avantgarde. Taking jazz into the realms of absolute freedom, both editions are masterpieces on improvisation, with every instrument contributing to the greater work. A record as inlfuential as A Love Supreme and anything by Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra, this is a must have.
Unwound Repetition

4.5 superb
Bad Brains Rock For Light
Mercury Rev Yerself Is Steam
Sebadoh III
Quintessential Indie Rock! Full of memorable songs, witty lyrics and stylistic variation, in spite of having over 20 songs, not many of them can be called filler, and each one of those would be a standout in any other album.
This is a complete success in every way but in the commercial sense, so it actually deserves a 5, but it can be difficult to get into the chaotic storm and the sub-production in the first times.
Among the many highlights there is: The Freed Pig, Black Haired Gurl, Limb by Limb, Renaissance Man and As the World dies....
Sonic Youth Evol
shit, this album is almost perfect, but Marilyn Moore is really boring
SUMA Let the Churches Burn

4.0 excellent
Blut Aus Nord The Work Which Transforms God
Discharge Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
Idaho Year After Year
Ornette Coleman Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation
Among the best of free jazz, and very innovative regarding the "double quartet" thing
Paradise Lost Icon

3.5 great

Glenn Branca The Ascension
Jeff Buckley Grace

3.0 good
Black Flag Damaged
Good, but a tad overrated. This isn't nearly as good as Minor Threat, Reagan Youth, Circle Jerks or Bad Brains
Fugazi Repeater
Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Nirvana Bleach
Bleach is Nirvana not yet fully assuming their influences and thus resulting in a collection of some really good songs and many forgettable ones. The knack for metal of Cobain & co. is shown here more than in any latter release with some tracks having a truly oppressive atmosphere. Best songs: Blew, About a Girl, School, Paper Cuts, Swap Meet
Satanic Surfers Unconsciously Confined
Holly balls, batman, this is actually a very FUN listen! Don't expect any technichality here, this is fast, to the point, melodic hardcore/punk pop. The hooks are strong and infectous, and many songs, like Pecan Pie and Bittesweet will stick in your mind.
The lyrics are mostly about everyday life, but singer Rodrigo also makes time to talk about the discrimination he suffered (PC = Potential Criminal); but when he tries to make a social/political protest, he fails EPICALLY (State of Conformity, Don't Let Silence Be An Option).
To listen without high expectations.

Explosions in the Sky All of a Sudden, I Miss Everyone
Metallica Metallica
I won't dismiss it because of the change in style metallica experienced....but this is not very good. Most songs are filler and the ones that are not (Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam), have become annoying due to excesive radio and tv play.
The power ballad, Nothing Else Matters, is pure melodrama and a weak attempt at achieving the intensity of past offers (the classics Fade to Black, Welcome Home and One).
What's left is unoriginal and boring hard rock.

The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream

2.0 poor
Converge Jane Doe
I'm sorry, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand all the praise. All there it is to hear in this album is pure norsecore and breakdowns if you ask me. The only appeal of these particular collection is its brutality....and honestly, even that wears old after the second listen. If you seek for brutality, there are zillions of better bands in the grindcore and death metal genres to enjoy. Anaal Nathrakh are a better but similar option to this.
Temple of the Dog Temple of the Dog
The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
The influence of this album is certainly undeniable, and I'm sure that probably 90% of the bands I like are, in one way or another, influenced by it. But if we're meant to judge the albums from an impartial point of view, I can't really find anything that makes it worthy of a score higher than 2. I don't see how this is so groundbreaking, since there is little variation from what the Beatles had been doing for the previous 2 or 3 albums. The orchestrations are overrated, since even more popular artists had done this more than 10 years ago (and I mean, Sinatra).
The choral arrangements are also overrated.....has noone ever heard a soul/R&B record??
The songs are most of the time boring, and at times, annoying (With a little help..., Being for the benefit....).
I only found two enjoyable songs here: Within You, Without You and the title track. The former is truly amazing, and the latter is a great proto-garage attack. Fixing a Hole is nice for it's jazzy feel, but really, there's not much more here.
