Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me |
Death The Sound of Perseverance |
The Sound of Perseverance is the most suitable title for this album. Death's final and most in-depth album. Chuck Schuldiner's guitar work is phenomenal, the lyrics are superb and Chuck's vocals in this album (which are higher than the previous) has more impact than before. It is the soundtrack of epic wisdom and positive vibes portrayed in the darkest possible form. The entire album is a lesson of character-hood. It's a fine way of saying "Be kind and respectful, but also be confident and assertive and don't be walked on". At least to me anyway. There is no documented evidence that Chuck Schudliner was a genius; however evidence points towards this. Chuck got straight A's in school despite his lack of interest (he eventually dropped). Chuck's musical talent and technical ability is extremely high. He was a great philosopher (his quotes, words, beliefs, love for life, positive energy...etc) as well as a fantastic poet. It makes it all the more impressive knowing that he had suffered a lot through life. (losing an older brother, battling cancer..etc.). Plus he wrote The Sound of Perseverance. He was a polymath, I have no doubts about that. May he rest in peace, and his legacy live on foreer. |
Dissection Storm of the Light's Bane |
An artistic combination of Melodic Death Metal and Black Metal, with Classical influences. The album has beautiful acoustic passages that have subtle evil undertones to them. The blast beats are ferocious, yet stylistic and well-timed. Nödtveidt's mid-high shrieks are haunting and powerful. The heavy guitar riffs and solos are some of the best. This is an essential metal album. |

Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada |
I was blown away by Moya the first time I heard it, and I put it on repeat. Little did I know what I was missing out on, for the 2nd (and last) track on the album is undoubtedly the most powerful instrumental piece I have come across. Power in the sense of great ambition, but not lacking substance and emotional depth. The climax of BBF3 has a drive like none other, this is my favorite EP of all time. |
Opeth Still Life |
Individually the songs on this album have an interpretable meaning, as a whole, this album tells a tragic tale in a flawless poetic fashion. Mikael's clean vocals in this album have improved since MAYH. It is evident because of the much more complex melodies in this album. He's able to connect his notes much smoother than before and swiftly soar through his range. His growls make the listener feel the rage and torment of the protagonist. The acoustic portions and the ballads are absolutely beautiful. "Still Life" is an artistic masterpiece. |
Opeth Blackwater Park |
Mystical, few albums can match the greatness of Blackwater Park |
Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime |
Radiohead OK Computer |
Revolutionary release with memorable and distinct melodies. Though this album may not be as technically advanced as it's successor, Radiohead managed to make the best of the simple alternative rock style. Though the "simple" I speak of is only with respect to Radiohead's later releases. Within its own genre the album is still technically superior to most. Thomas Yorke's sophisticated tenor vocals are delivered in a smooth and crisp manner. Transitions between notes are impeccable and the vocal runs are as smooth as butter. Rarely does a tenor have such a resonant and full tone, which is highlighted during the natural vocal fades. |

Incredible guitar riffs throughout, some of the most memorable solos I've heard, amazing drumming/double bass, aggressive screams, powerful rough vocals and catchy clean vocals. Title track is fantastic. |

Circle Takes the Square As the Roots Undo |
I'm starting to appreciate where this album is coming from. On the exterior you hear a mess of screechy vocals, but deep within the lyrics and the emotionally deep instrumental something great seems to spawn. And then the warring vocals that sound like crazy voices in the head become clear. |
Converge Jane Doe |
Jane Doe, I am finally beginning to understand you. The title track is mind-blowing. |
Converge Axe to Fall |
Creative, original and full of artistic lyrics. It took a long time to connect with this album, but once it clicked I found myself absorbed into both its extreme aggression and its underlying calmness. |

Emery We Do What We Want |
At first I thought much of the album was mediocre aside from "Scissors", but I grew to enjoy it very much. The vocalist has superb control over his breathy and crisp tones. "The Anchors" is the perfect example of this . It opens with a soft, breathy, resonant and emotionally powerful tone. Then the song breaks out into high notes with a lot of impact. Eventually it reaches the bridge which provides the listener with a crisp, heady and smoothly annunciated tone. The vocalist is very versatile, and that is something that I tend to notice and am very impressed by because I am training my own vocals. |

Katatonia Tonight's Decision |
Katatonia Last Fair Deal Gone Down |
Katatonia Night Is the New Day |
Highly underrated album, I stopped listening to it for about 8 months after being addicted to it for 3 months. Now I am listening to it again, it feels nostalgic and has grown a new lasting appeal. Classic in my mind. A few cliches here and there, but they're minor. |
Koji Kondo The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time OST |
One of the most memorable game soundtracks of all time. |
La Dispute Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair |
The vocalist's technique threw me off at first; being a fan of more 'traditional' styles. But I've learned to appreciate the pure energy, emotion, dissonance and uniqueness that this album has to offer. The instrumental pieces switch gears between intensity and beauty. Album is a grower, for sure. |
Opeth Morningrise |
Opeth Deliverance |
Opeth Damnation |
A fantastic Progressive Rock album with a spine-chilling atmosphere. Damnation is obviously not Opeth's usual style, yet it is still an impressive release. All of the tracks are incredible, the one weakness in the album may be the overuse of the Mellotron, but most wouldn't even catch that. Overall, Damnation achieves its goal of creating a haunting experience. |
Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse |
Opeth Ghost Reveries |
Underrated, when compared to "Still Life" and "Blackwater Park". "Ghost Reveries" manages to keep the epic-atmospheric vibe that Opeth is famous for, but adds in the jazz element. Opeth was never the typical 4/4 band, but the new style made the time signature shifts even more dynamic than before. So to say that this album is inferior to "The Big 2" is unfair. I do, however find it a bit less interesting than SL or BWP. |
Opeth Watershed |
It is nearly flawless, Hex Omega is the only song I don't listen to frequently, it's still a good track though. |

As a matter of fact, there are 4 superficial facial bones (not including pairs). That would be the Zygomatic, Nasal, Maxilla and Mandible. There are other deeper facial bones such as the Vomer, Inferior Nasal Concha, Lacrimal...etc. Anyhow, this album starts off with "Ignition" which repeatedly changes time signatures and the song eventually works up to a catchy chorus. The combination of clean vocals and technical riffs/solos make this an enjoyable album. This album should not be passed off as a "Metallica clone" or "Mainstream Rock", surely any guitar player has to appreciate the technical aspects of this album. |

Grew off me, very quickly. The opening riffs sound almost identical in most tracks. No joke, play the first 20-30 seconds on every song back-to-back and you'll hear it. Some of the songs have very catchy moments, but the amount of repetition kills it. |

Stairway to Heaven is the one saving grace of this album as it withstands the test of time. However, tracks such as "Rock and Roll" have been overplayed to the point of irritation on radio/television/movies. These tracks may have been impressive at a time I didn't exist, nowadays the majority of these tracks are rather stale. |
Mastodon Remission |
Metallica Kill 'Em All |
Metallica Reload |
Metallica Death Magnetic |
While the idea of resurrecting an old style is good and the musical talent is present; Metallica still falls flat on their face. However, they don't face-plant quite as hard this time, as this record is far superior to their previous. Metallica was at one time young and ambitious, but they reached a point where they just put out records for the sake of doing so. And this time was no different, but after so much negative reception they had to make sure that the next album wasn't terrible. This album (unwittingly) aimed for mediocrity. It is the aural manifestation of indolence. |
