I'm hoping that the difference between giving this album a 5 and a 3 lies entirely with the way it is listened to. For example, cheap skullcandys or 20$ speakers at half volume= 3 and quality equipment (not necessarily expensive) at close to full volume (just below intolerable)= 5. It makes a huge difference, and I suggest to anyone giving this album below a 5 to really go out and get some good speakers or headphones. You'll change your mind.

Matana Roberts COIN COIN Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres
coin coin is definitely tough to swallow, but each song on here is a very emotional experience with genuinely bone-chilling screams and contrastingly detached spoken word parts. these parts pair an unnerving aloofness in delivery with lyrics that contain attrocities of rape, death, and abuse through the eyes of a slave woman. the musicianship is also quite impeccable, with great sax playing (an obvious must) and moody piano melodies sparsed throughout. though the ideas presented lyrically are quite dense, the song structures aren't too out of the ordinary for the genre. this album is gripping in every sense and though i doubt i'll be able to listen to it again for at least a few more weeks, i definitely suggest that anyone with at least a moderate interest in free-jazz and experimental music should check this out.

Plaid Spokes
One of the better IDM records of the decade. Plaid seems to be one of the few electronic bands staying true to their IDM roots nowadays, which is neither good nor bad, but gives you an idea of what to expect from this album. It's nothing too revolutionary, but makes for an extremely easy listen, features superb production, and could be a great place to start for someone new to the genre.

A catchy and promising release from a surprisingly unheard of indie rock band. Perhaps not extremely consistent or original, but they've got about as much potential as any British Indie act in the past few years.
