I was looking at the second hand CDs on the metal floor of 'disc union' (a CD chain store) in Shibuya, Tokyo and I noticed that this flipping amazing melodic death metal was being played on the stereo. As I continued browsing, the quality of the music continued to be sublime. So then I asked who it was and it was this awesome band 'Solerrain' from Russia. I didn't hesitate and bought this album there and then. I don't often buy 'new' releases, but this was well worth it. Imagine a band melding the best from Swedish and Finnish melodic death metal all on one disc. There are Swedish death grunts, a Finnish sense of chord progressions and elements of power metal thrown in, especially in the solos. A very enjoyable listen indeed. It's heavy, has no clean vocals, melodic as foo and has inspired solos. What more could you want from a melodic death metal band in this day and age? Basically, this is like CoB if they still had some balls and originality. Epic cover art!

This is an amazing melodeath album by an underdog band from the US no less! It's full of unique songwriting and has a great sound for an unsigned act. Other instruments such as piano are used effectively too. I really respect the ambitious focused vision of this band. This album is almost impossible to find these days, but it's well worth picking up if you can. A real rare gem.

Kagrra Hyakki Kenran (Gorgeous Pandemonium)
This is a solid album for Kagrra to say farewell to its fans with. Genre-wise, it's a standard affair for Kagrra this last time around with their unique Neo-Japanesque Rock (and the only other band to come close to making music similar to this but on a stranger level is 'Kiryuu'). Expect a base of pentatonic vocal melodies and lots of koto embellishments woven around driving guitar riffs and beautiful acoustic guitar arpeggios. It's sad to see them disband after 11 years as they were one of the few mature visual kei bands that could be taken seriously. The standout tracks are 'Chigiri', 'Shiroi Uso' and 'Shiki'. Incidently, all 3 tracks were released as singles prior to the album's release.
