This may have taken a few listens to sink in (especially after rinsing my copies of White Tomb and Mammal), but this album is incredible. It completely dissociates the band away from the trends and clich?s of the post-black metal genre, and revamps it with fresh experimentation. In an interview, they listed Pig Destroyer and even techno music as an influence on the latest album - I'm not exactly sure what they've done, but I've never heard anything like this before. The album is solid from start to finish, and without a doubt my AOTY so far.

In Flames Sounds of a Playground Fading
Both disappointed and surprised at the same time with this release. They've done well despite the departure of Str?ad, I was personally impressed with Gelotte's work in this album. It's brought a fresh sound with qualities which reminded me of their Reroute to Remain-era sound. The electronic additions are reminiscent of Soundtrack to Your Escape, yet this album is nowhere near the quality, consistency and depth of the previously mentioned releases. Ander's vocals are quite a letdown, bringing what would-be great tracks down to an average level. A lot of the tracks feel very empty and generic, and just very sub-par compared to their discography. I've been a long-time fan of In Flames, and in my opinion this is their weakest release, I was hoping for so much more.
