This is annoying because I'm undoubtedly a huge fan. Thundercat's lyrical humour, technical
bass-playing, captivating falsetto are significant attributes to make you excited for new material
and, indeed, they all feature prominently. Unfortunately, the songwriting is either too formulaic or
just not up to scratch. So many short tracks leave your mind as quickly as they enter. Still,
"actual" songs 'Drunk'*, 'Friend Zone', 'Them Changes' and 'The Turn Down' are strong, while 'Uh
Uh' is a maximal showcase of Thundercat's impressive ability on the bass. Nevertheless,
Thundercat's obvious technical talents are crying out for him to tap into a progressive side in his
songwriting that incorporates the inspiration he pulls out in live shows. |
