Sadly, I don't believe that they will overcome Panopticon in my eyes.

yea I agree that they will never be able to match panopticon but what they are doing now is still blowing me away... I like this album more and more every time I listen to it, which is how it goes with their albums because it takes so long to notice every intricate detail of what they are doing. IMO that is exactly what makes them one of the best bands out there, they never get boring because your always noticing something new in their music.
great review BTW, really liked the second paragraph

sounds like you would rate this higher than a 4

I like particular songs on panopticon and oceanic but to me, In The Absence was the first album I heard by Isis that sounded like a complete album instead of just a collection of songs. I really liked the more minimalist approach, I thought that it sounded a lot tighter and the climaxes were way more powerful in a lot of cases. Looking forward to hearing this. Great review Andrew.

It's no Pam Beesly, that's for sure. But it's better than no avatar... not mentioning any names.

chan likes to feel special with his new avatar.
and Waior, what is with you and Pam Beesly?

Intro to Hall Of The Dead reminds me something Alchemist would pull off. Amazing album.

Alchemist wishes they were this tight.

Alchemist have been around since the members of Isis were playing kickball in middle school yet i strangely agree with you despite enjoying more Alchemist records than Isis.

Time to listen to these guys more. I get intense cerebral experiences with these guys.
