and his clean vocals continue to improve with each release.
He peaked out at Obsolete and has literally copied his style ever since (which is still enjoyable).
Also, why no love for Archetype? You mention Transgression as if it's their top 5 material when really it's an E.P. with some crap covers thrown on last minute to fill the time gap.
Glad you did this review buddy, always a pleasure to read. I'm actually seeing them on August 10th, looking forward to it.

@Wizard "He peaked out at Obsolete and has literally copied his style ever since (which is still enjoyable)."
I don't understand why I so often read stuff like "Dino's songwriting has improved" "Burton has never sound so pissed off" the songwriting was great on 80% of the tracks on Demanufacture and Obsolete. Dino couldn't possibly improve to a point that it is noticeable (and actually it has weakened a bit). On the contrary, when the songwriting is lazy or weak, it shows. Same thing for Burton's vocals. I cannot imagine Dino writing Pisschrist, Hunter Killer or Demanufacture in 2015.
Transgression is longer without its two covers than The Industrialist or Mechanize. It's just that they are misplaced on the album (and true, not exactly great).

I'd take Digimortal over Archetype or Transgression any day
people dismiss the whole album because of Back da Fuck up

I'd take archetype over digimortal, mechanize, trangression and obsolete.

As far as Burton's harsh vocals go, I think his most brutal sounding are on most of Obsolete and Archetype and some of Mechanize. Always thought they were a bit different than his vox on their other releases.
The new album doesn't seem like it will have that gritty quality. I'm hoping for the best nevertheless.

@ResidentNihilist "I'd take archetype over digimortal, mechanize, transgression and obsolete."
Yes, but you're a resident nihilist. :p
Archetype is nice but has some very weak moments which Obsolete and Mechanize don't have in my opinion. Plus, I like their sound and riffing much better.
@Hellpriest
I actually quite like digimortal if byte block, hurt conveyor and back the fuck up are replaced by Dead man walking, Strain vs resistance and Repentance (the bonus tracks)
Invisible wounds, memory imprints never ends, acres of skin are awesome tracks and the rest is very good too and strangely fun, the riffs are bouncy.
And if you listen to the chorus of repentance, dead man walking, digimortal or Linchpin, you can hear how Dino could write cool melodic stuff before he got an 8 string. He's doing a similar type of riff on dielectric's chorus but the difference is not flattering.

Yep I agree, Digimortal gets too much shit.

I don't think so. He is using his singing voice better than on those albums. Part of that is the better songwriting which makes the choruses more like actual choruses and not just a repetitive verse that happens to have clean vocals.
I like Transgression (minus the covers) and would probably take that over Archetype just because if I'm looking for stereotypical Fear Factory I'll go with a different album.

The songwriting was great on those, but they've got better with the nuances and the transitions and the integration of electronics with the metal and the choruses. Also, Dino's playing isn't nearly as two-dimensional these days as it was way back in the beginning. He probably couldn't write those songs now, because they've expanded their sound beyond what those songs were.

Soul of a New Machine....
--The new album doesn't seem like it will have that gritty quality.--
It doesn't. Very slick, polished, and more melody than they're generally known for.
1. Soul of a New Machine
2. Demanufacture
3. Mechanize
4. Digimortal
5. Genexus
6. Archetype
7. Transgression
8. The Industrialist
9. Obsolete

that opinion is almost to the point of being wrong

Obsolete is my least favorite Fear Factory album (in case the list didn't make that obvious).

Album Rating: 3.5
don't see how that's possible, at least Mechanize is 3 which is correct.
1. Demanufacture
2. Obsolete
3. Mechanize
4. The Industrialist
5. Archetype
6. Soul of a New Machine
7. Digimortal
8. Transgression
Not sure where I'll put this but I'm sure it'll be between Industrialist and Archetype
