4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | February 1st 17 | I suppose since Cloud Nothings disappointed it's only fair that Priests came through with a winner with their debut full-length. Some truly catchy and surprisingly danceable post-punk from this quartet of lovelies, who tastefully phase in influences from jazz and funk. The lyrics have a highly anti-capitalist and thus very political edge to them, and Katie Greer's vocals reflect this by sounding impassioned and powerful. It's like last year's Pill full-length, just with tighter songwriting and better performances. Anthem-like opener "Appropriate" and the quick-and-catchy "JJ" set the tone for how Nothing Feels Natural sounds, and the songwriting stays at a high level throughout the album. Closer "Suck" definitely does not do its namesake, as it's a quite masterfully written song that flows so perfectly from its funky beginning to its climactic art punk ending it's a wonder it doesn't flow right out of the speakers. It's a stunning debut full-length for Priests, who are quickly becoming a name to remember when the topic is modern post-punk.

4.5 superb | cjbizzlebizzle | December 29th 17 | Raw, noisy and gritty artsy post-punk fronted by the startling and abrasive Katie Greer. Both the vocals and the instrumentation are absolutely on point and push the genre forward in wonderful ways. Greer has wonderful nuanced variations in her approach from yelling to singing to spoken word and subtle mixes of each. She can sing powerfully but also bring in raspy bass and high pitch shrills. Supporting the vocals is some of the best post-punk instrumentation of recent memory. Priests do well going from noisy guitar passages to more aggressive punk inspired sections to groovy 80s inspired bass lines. Throw in an excellent spoken word tune and sections that are akin to pop rock and you end up with a rather unique sound. There really isn't anything to miss in this 33 minute record as Priests really produced a stunner with their first full length.

3.2 good | Erwann S. STAFF | October 11th 22 | Post-punk was damn abundant during the '10s. Bands like Priests could thus make a name for themselves, even though their frontwoman was basically the sole thing distinguishing them from other bands. The soundscape is tiny, and while the instrumentations are cool, they ain't nothing to swoon over apart from the bookend tracks.

3.0 good | TheManMachine | February 25th 17 | Each of these ten trax has its own fun lil distinction whether it's a standout surf guitar loop or a deadpan-n-driving spoken word tirade or a good Cookie Monster growl or a catchy corporate-mock mantra -- but reliance on repetitive and rudimental drum+bass patterns can leave the tunes feeling weak, and said patterns usually aren't particularly novel or notable. They never quite outdo themselves in the catharsis department after the teardown/buildup/dinning dogpile of the opener, but as a succinct set of summed up post-punk routines complete with an outta-place placid interlude it's nice on the whole. If nothing else, they've got a versatile and perturbed frontwoman and are steady as fuck.
