Snail Mail is an interesting case study in what makes great indie music so great, while also what made indie music die a hard death in the late 2000s. On Lindsey?s sophomore record with her band, they continue down the indie path and create exactly what you expect for an indie album. Lush instrumentals, memorable hooks, and infectious courses. But there is just a constant feeling that this is nothing new for the genre as a whole. Yes, there are some truly great indie opuses on here and some of the best instrumentals show up on this album, but overall, this album just seems like a lot of above-average tracks with nothing truly memorable about them.

Pretty damn good, very tightly written. The first album had a lot more raw emotion in it, though, and I'm definitely more into that side of her music.

Snail Mail got the budget she deserved and was destined for, while delivering album she promised and her fans knew she had in her. Tunes are more well-rounded, the production is fitting, the instrumentals are fiery, the vocals are passionate.

A more mellow, melancholic, and unfortunately dull output compared to Lush. She leans heavier into the somber singer-songwriter routine but I don't think it really suits her.

I really wanted to like this album, especially since Lush was such a breath of fresh air, but
this never hooked me in past the first track. It especially dragged during the ballads where
she does her trademark "just hitting puberty/broken vocal" kinda thing over and over again
stretching for some emotion. I'm sure there's a lot more meaning deeper in the lyrics, but
the music here is so fabulously dull that I can't stop thinking that this may be just an
overhyped Pitchfork sophomore slump.

Received pre-ordered vinyl a day early. We see some more of the same kind of fair from Lush,
but it's so damn good it almost doesn't matter. There's also a "groove" here that wasn't in
Lush (see Ben Franklin, Forever/Sailing). Just the right amount of experimentation (both
vocally on Lindsey's part, and instrumentally) to push slightly forward while maintaining
the standard of her first. Impressive she doesn't slump here. Also its a bit more tender
than I expected (see Light Blue and c. et. al.). Standout tracks: Glory, Ben Franklin,
Forever (Sailing), Valentine. Solid, 3.5 that will probably evolve into a 4 over time imo.
