lol but seriously, if your school is anything like mine (full of idiotic, ignorant people), then just forget about them and associate with others who don't annoy you because if the people you do hang out with are annoying you, your hanging out with the wrong people. Find something to do on your spare time to help get your mind off whatever's stressing you out. Learn to play an instrument (I'm probably really happy most of the time because of drumming. It helps to blow off steam sometimes), play some video games, read a book, or something. You (and me) are still young, so whatever is stressing you out is probably some little, insignificant thing that more than likely isn't such a big deal so just forget about it and you'll probably laugh about it in a couple weeks or so. |

The bottom line is that you got yourself into depression, and only you can get yourself out of depression. |

05.12.12 | Do you find you compare yourself to others a lot? Like in terms of where your life is headed, what you've accomplished, or stupid things like looks? I'm only asking cuz you mentioned how ppl you know are "hypocritical".
I do this too much and here's what happens:
A) If you think yourself better than someone --> you will tend to think of the negative things about them (what's wrong with them) and end up hating them for the way they are.
B) If you think someone is better than you --> you will be consumed with feelings of both envy and self-loathing for how much of a failure you seem alongside them and hate them for being better than you.
Case in point, I find that the people I meet who are depressed (including myself) have a tendency of comparing themselves to others when its more important to stay focused on yourself and your goals in life. |

05.12.12 | anyone who calls this guy a pussy is a worthless piece of shit. it doesn't matter whether or not he has anything to be depressed about, it's a mental illness. obviously the feelings aren't going to be rational. i'm 22 and i've dealt with depression for about 7 years now. it takes an incredible toll on not only the individual, but all of those close to them. if you've never been depressed (as in clinically depressed, not just sad) then you have no idea what it feels like and you shouldn't ever tell somebody that they are weak or selfish for their feelings.
"It's like I want to be alone, but I get depressed when I am alone."
i know the exact feeling. just know that suicide is never the answer, you're stronger than most of these people talking shit on you for something they know nothing about. i'd be happy to talk to you if you ever need to get anything off of you're chest. sometimes it's easier to talk to someone over the internet about these kinds of things than with somebody in real life. just know that you should never feel ashamed about the way you feel, it's not your fault. just stay positive. |

The straw that finally broke the camels back was when the night crew started doing meth and no one was going to do anything about it and because of what happened to me with the DEA and getting narc'd on I'm not the kind of person to snitch about that shit so one day when my shift was over I told the GM I'm done and that was my last day. |

Puzzles
05.12.12 | I have one word to headline what I'm going to say: purpose. Reading what you've written, there's one thing that's screaming out to me: you don't feel like you have a purpose. You're stuck in a hopeless place full of narcissistic, materialistic people and everything seems pretty bleak looking out at the outside world. You're not getting any fulfilment out of anything and understandably so. I have absolutely no doubt that if I didn't have the outlook I have and the desire to be purposeful that I have, I would be in exactly the same position as you. All through high school, I've resented the people I've gone to high school with, I've resented the teachers and the school and all of the people around me, and I've despised the system and its philosophies. The idea that you go through 6 years of high school, get a job, make money, have a family etc has always sounded completely fucked to me. I'm different, I know that, and I know you're in the same boat. What I have done is taken this resentment, this negative energy, and filtered it into a perpetual desire to be BETTER than the people I so resent, and in doing this I've given myself purpose. I've absolutely given myself to the need to be the most well-read person in the room, to be a skilled multi-instrumentalist (I've taken up 6 instruments), a knowledgable producer and a highly politically-minded person. |
auberginedreams
05.12.12 | "tl;dr"
perhaps, but this is obviously a sensitive subject for me. i don't think the people saying "kill yourself or get over it" understand how much words can affect someone who is depressed, even over the internet. you should NEVER say that kind of a thing to somebody who has admitted feeling suicidal. obviously i don't know this kid so i can't say if his case is as serious as i'm making it out to be, so excuse me if i'm overreacting, but until you know you should assume that he's telling the truth and be careful about what you say. |
Puzzles
05.12.12 | Instead of following the path that has been set out for everyone else, I've realised that we all have the power to actually divert from that path and carve out our own niche in life. If you have the desire and the drive to do it, it's easy, in the sense that you actually revel in the challenges that life gives you in pursuit of your goals. I gain fulfilment through writing and recording music, writing poetry, painting and doing as much community service as I can, and when I don't have the opportunity to do these things (I'm in a boarding house), I tend to get incredibly depressed and spiral into self-loathing. If you can find yourself a purpose in life, you will find yourself on top of the world. Your hatred for the robotic, ignorant, mindless and aimless people around you can be filtered into a drive to be someone great. I can assure you that all of the greatest people throughout history would have had the same feeling as you do - that they're "out of sync" with society and that they don't "fit in", and this has been filtered into a drive to do incredible things. Some examples: Albert Einstein, John Lennon, Steve Jobs, Muhammad Ali, Henry Rollins (my personal favourite). I'm 17 as well and I don't intend to follow the conservative, bullshit path that everyone else seems to follow. In the future I intend to justify my existence through creating the best music that I can and dive into making a difference in the world. I would like to bring awareness to the humanitarian crisis in China, for example, and I will be able to do this through reaching a larger audience who will listen to what I have to say. This is my purpose, and if I didn't have this outlook (which I did up until last year) I have no doubt I would be a worthless, cynical, pessimistic, angry, depressed piece of shit. You can be your own person, and once you realise that limits are wholly self-imposed (which I didn't believe for most of my life) then you'll be a much happier, more fulfilled person with an optimistic outlook on life and a desire to do great things. Peace and love, my friend. |

The last principle always applies so long as you are aware of it. |

Its hard at first to not control your breath when you're focusing on it but after some practice you learn to just relax and witness it. If a thought comes up just let it come and go. Dont follow it. Return to your breath. After 10 minutes you're done. Easy peasy. |

05.12.12 | Yea the first time people meditate it can freak them out how much they think. Most dont realize that the vast majority of your thoughts are not even yours, which is why its so hard for people to meditate. If you were actually controlling your thoughts youd be able to stop them any time you want, and you cant. They just pop up with no warning. If you're not aware of it your mind will be racing all day. So yea meditation/just being more conscious helps that alot. |

I kinda have an idea of what you're saying and I agree if it is what I think you're saying.
Like I believe in god but I also believe in science if that makes sense. For example, the religious buffs who discredit all science piss me off because they think everything just popped out of nowhere instead of going through transformations and evolutions. I think whoever this great diety is (god or whatever) is what made this world so complex. It purposely has everything go through transformations.
This was my pitiful attempt to explain what I believe in. Again this is what I think and I, along with everyone in the world, can be completely wrong about what I (we) believe. |

But depression, in its darkest stages, isn't annoying. I've battled depression for most of my life, and it's fucking abysmal, man, but to want to die - like, to really want to die - is serious business. People find attractive people attractive? Oh no!... chances are you've met plenty; people can't help being human but do feel free to go fuck a morbidly obese girl if you personally don't care about looks. She'd appreciate it.
"Last time I checked, depression causes displeasure and troubles and irritation."
No it doesn't; it promotes apathy (I can explain to you the neurological and practical reasons if you want, but it shouldn't be necessary). Anger causes displeasure, troubles and irritation, and that anger is most likely caused by a perspective of life that jars with reality. All you need to do is relax and not take things so seriously. You're saying you don't think you're better than anyone else but you speak in the kind of snark, snappy manner as someone who thinks the people they're dealing with are impossibly stupid. True, but it's way more important what the actual therapist/psychologist knows about it, and I'm inclined to say that a qualified one at least SHOULD be up to date on such things. Of course that doesn't always hold true. |
