06.08.13 | Absolutely understand the desire for more piano - hope I can help!
These have been said but still going to recommend:
I second The Tumbled Sea - they're lovely (and free)
Goldmund (nice chilled solo piano)
Mouse on The keys (jazzy math rock but piano led)
and A Winged Victory For the Sullen (beautiful piano ambient by half of stars of the lid)
Also look at:
Tangled Thoughts Of Leaving - Deaden the Fields (I think you'd love this one)
Anathema - Hindsight (piano backing for most songs)
Thelonious Monk - (anything really it's all awesome if you like jazz piano)
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon (great orchestral/piano prog)
RQTN - Monolithes en Movement (Piano post rock w. beats)
Yes - Close To The Edge (that organ....)
Frost* - Milliontown (especially title track has some amazing playing)
Gentle Giant - Octopus (old style prog but nice piano in places)
Haken - Aquarius (there's some nice piano amongst all the keys)
IQ - Frequency (this one is excellent neo-prog)
Moon Safari - Lover's End (might be a bit cheesy but piano's lovely sounding)
Neal Morse - ? (guy can really play)
Sylvan - Posthumous Silence (this is so f-ing sad and the piano is key. one of my favs)
Eluvium - Copia (ambient/piano stuff - rated super high on sputnik)
But as a Piano player myself dude: It's all about classical! Cool if it's not your thing though - I don't think anything else really gets on anywhere near the same level though if you really love the instrument:
Rachmaninoff's 2nd and 3rd piano concertos
Grieg Piano concerto in A Minor
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no1
Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue
Mozart piano concerto no 9
Beethoven Piano Concerto no5
Chopin piano Concerto no1
Brahms Piano Concerto no1 |

06.09.13 | Mozart is definitely not on quite the same level as Beethoven. Both were f-ing geniuses but Beethoven just had a knack for tonality and harmony in his music that has been unmatched by anyone in musical history.
God, the guy even gets his own musical period |

06.09.13 | It's. Funny you say that js19 cuz I think the exact opposite. Beethoven my god is fantastic but I think he gets the appeal because he was far darker and gloomier. Not mention he was fucking deaf. But to me Mozart absolutely blows him out of the water with his synchopated(probably spelled that wrong) rhythms and his knack for writing fun songs on a fucking piano. Obviously the both greats in their own right and music is subjective but remember that Beethoven met Mozart and it forever changed the way he wrote music. Also thanks for all the recs you're awesome. |
JS19
06.09.13 | I have to say I'm more inclined towards the complex harmonies and dynamic contrast that Beethoven transitioned so I might be a bit biased. The way i see it Mozart absolutely perfected a musical and periodic style while Beethoven created his own which paved the way for the future. i just find that more impressive.
That being said they were both just crazily talented so there's really not much in it! And it's cool man, I just love the instrument! |
