07.20.16 | Perfect albums in my opinion: Deftones' White Pony, OK Computer, Opeth's Blackwater Park, and Godspeed You!'s F#F# (infinity) |
Tyler.
07.20.16 | Is the one I'm writing rn |
user
07.20.16 | yeah def gotta go with tyler's solo work |
SirDrumsalot
07.20.16 | Dredg - El Cielo has zero low point for me. |
Faraudo
07.20.16 | ^^Agreed, El Cielo has zero low points. Blink-182's self titled is also a perfect album for me. Massive Attack's Mezzanine could also be one, Karnivool's Sound Awake, Radiohead's Kid A, NIN's The Downward Spiral, etc. |
Djang0
07.20.16 | Gotta be motW's Bath, Kid A, Bjork's Vespertine |
user
07.20.16 | but seriously I don't think I could really consider any album perfect. or at least not yet. lift your skinny fists has been my favorite album for many many years but it certainly does have its shortcomings |
brainmelter
07.21.16 | no such thing as perfect but,
ulcerate - everythang is fire |
Sevengill
07.21.16 | I'm gonna get torched for suggesting power metal, but every song on Gamma Ray's "Land of the Free" is 5 stars. |
Typhoon24
07.21.16 | oh fuck blackwater park i just relistened to it |
porcupinetheater
07.21.16 | Don't know how measure anything as perfect, but there's plenty of albums that I wouldn't change a single note on. |
TVC15
07.21.16 | I wouldn't say a single album is perfect because a lot are but several albums do make me feel a lot of different emotions in the album's span like The Holy Bible, A Love Supreme, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, and a few others. |
Typhoon24
07.21.16 | oh there can be more than one. definition i was thinking is more along the lines of porcupine's comment about not wanting to change anything on it. and I mean ANY change. like if one song in the album is slow to start and that sliiiiightly annoys you, the album is no longer perfect. |
Sevengill
07.21.16 | this is a dumb question, then. it's art, not science. |
Typhoon24
07.21.16 | i know. im curious and was looking for a discussion about related topics, too. i dont think there is a right answer or way to get there. i wanna know more about things like the subjective vs objective values we give to albums. |
Typhoon24
07.21.16 | and music appreciation is more of a science than you might think |
Rolling Girl
07.21.16 | ~ by Iamthemorning is a pretty magical album if you ask me. |
MistaCrave
07.21.16 | Gotta be The Mantle for me, I love every second of it. Even if it wasn't perfect initially, I've adapted to it and learned to love everything on it for what it is |
Wearingyourmomsface
07.21.16 | I guess it's all subjective. One man's perfect is another man's pile of
sh!t. |
Sevengill
07.21.16 | "and music appreciation is more of a science than you might think"
As a music theory major, I cannot argue against that for a moment. |
Wearingyourmomsface
07.21.16 | On a positive note though, Altar of Plaques - Teethed in Glory and Injury is pretty much on the verge of perfection. IMO |
Wearingyourmomsface
07.21.16 | Oh as well as Agalloch - The Mantle. |
Sevengill
07.21.16 | The Mantle's pretty close. I honestly don't like A Desolation Song and it dampens the album for me. I wish it just ended with the reprise of the opening in Great Cold Death. |
MistaCrave
07.21.16 | That honestly would've been a perfect way to end the album, but I still love A Desolation Song |
RogueNine
07.21.16 | I'm always picky about something, so I doubt I'll find a perfect album. |
StallionMang
07.21.16 | disintegration is the closest thing i can think of to the perfect record
not so much because almost every track on there is a highlight, but because of how it flows from track to track, getting darker and darker, sending you on this introspective journey of diminishing hope |
Sevengill
07.21.16 | Sounds like Pelagial. That album has a couple hiccups but the full journey is awesome. |
Ebola
07.21.16 | Alice in Chains - Dirt
Interesting that you should pick Number of the Beast for this list--it has a handful of stone-cold classic songs, but the album itself is frustratingly inconsistent.
Persefone's "Core" has a chance of reaching that perfect level, but I haven't listened to it enough times to make that final call yet. |
torts
07.21.16 | aeroplane |
SandwichBubble
07.21.16 | Stop lookin for the perfect album, boys. Make it yourself. You're the only one who knows what you want in your music. |
MistaCrave
07.21.16 | That's a loooooooot easier said than done |
mattmkay
07.21.16 | Porcupine Tree - Deadwing |
0GuyMan0
07.21.16 | I think there are perfect albums. I also don't necessarily think that implies that fans of the genre should universally regard it as so. If everything they do is what they set out to create, if every note makes sense in context with the rest of the album, if it is clearly a standout success....K its fucking impossible to explain where I'm coming from without talking myself into a corner. So here are some perfect albums, IMO:
Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime (Rage For Order also garners serious consideration)
Rage Against the Machine - S/T
The Cure - Disintegration
Rosetta - The Galilean Satellites
Tool - Lateralus
Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me
Megadeth - Rust in Peace

07.21.16 | Just noticed someone mentioned Teethed Glory and Injury earlier. Fucking right on.
Goddamn I miss that band. |
DoofusWainwright
07.21.16 | 4 is one of the least consistent albums I've ever heard :/ |
Drifter
07.21.16 | The only album I could truly give a perfect rating for is Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy |
TVC15
07.21.16 | As much as I agree, why you gotta be such a Debbie Downer, Doof? |
Mystletainn
07.21.16 | There's no such thing as a perfect album so just rate 5/5 according to your taste |
50iL
07.21.16 | Hmm…
I'd give a perfect rating to John Coltrane - A Love Supreme and Coroner - Mental Vortex. Haven't found any others tho. |
0GuyMan0
07.21.16 | There's no such thing as a perfect album so just rate 5/5 according to your taste
Mathematically this comment doesn't make a ton of sense. |
trve
07.21.16 | there are quite some albums i would call "perfect"
but those aren't the ones i enjoy the most, some albums need the flaws to make them what they are
i.e. i consider my arms your hearse perfect from front to back, frances the mute certainly not, yet i enjoy frances the mute a lot more |
Keyblade
07.21.16 | been found it, it's called Loveless |
Keyblade
07.21.16 | Stronghold is pre perf too |
porcupinetheater
07.21.16 | "really it's not a flaw if it's something you enjoy"
fucking 123 |
Sevengill
07.21.16 | Stronghold drags so much though |
RadicalEd
07.21.16 | Animals - Pink Floyd |
zakalwe
07.21.16 | If you are looking for perfection you're in the wrong game.
Dark Side of the Moon. |
Piglet
07.21.16 | Perfection is called OK Computer and The Dark Side of the Moon |
Mystletainn
07.21.16 | "Mathematically this comment doesn't make a ton of sense."
My comment doesn't require math to figure out so your comment doesn't make sense to me. |
theBoneyKing
07.21.16 | Well a perfect album would have all 5/5 tracks and I have not yet and probably never will find one. |
Couteau
07.21.16 | Considering art (lyrics, concept, cover) and personal tastes, if I had to choose one, it would be in this short list :
Tool - Lateralus & Aenima
Pink Floyd - Animals & Wish You Were Here
Rage Against The Machine - S/T
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King |
Mystletainn
07.21.16 | "Well a perfect album would have all 5/5 tracks and I have not yet and probably never will find one."
That's exactly what I mean, if you're rating albums based on "perfection" you're kind of missing the point of rating albums imo. I look for a style I love then look for "perfection" within said style but that's just me. If I only gave 5's to perfect albums I'd never have any 5's ever. |
BenMorrison
07.21.16 | Perfect albums for me:
Lucifer's Friend - Banquet
Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond
Pentagram - Sub-Basement
Saint Vitus - Die Healing
Trapeze - Medusa
Budgie - Bandolier
Paul Chain - Life and Death
Black Sabbath - Sabotage |
VisionsFromTheDarkSide
07.21.16 | Lift Your Skinny Fists is probably the closest thing to perfection I can find |
AsleepInTheBack
07.21.16 | GY!BE have often come close.
There are albums that mean an awful lot to me for personal reasons that musically are excellent (but not perfect) which I wouldn't change one bit, so if thats the definition of perfect we're using then sure, most of my 5's are perfect in my humble opinion. |
guitarded_chuck
07.21.16 | F#A# and Animals are the two only two I can think |
Avagantamos
07.21.16 | autechre - draft 7.30
cannibal ox - the cold vein
gorguts - obscura |
UpwardSpiral
07.21.16 | Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You. Everything is flawless, perfect album. |
Sevengill
07.21.16 | Nightwish - End of an Era is perfect. |
worthlessscab
07.21.16 | There is only one objectively perfect. Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom |
Futures
07.21.16 | lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven |
Tunaboy45
07.21.16 | Tempted to say In Rainbows |
evilford
07.21.16 | pink floyd - dark side of the moon, animals, and wywh
the unholy trinity |
Tunaboy45
07.21.16 | ^ good shout |
RogueNine
07.22.16 | Interesting perspectives. I could only give a 5 to something I could really say is "perfect" but everyone has their own idea of what constitutes a 5. |
Sevengill
07.22.16 | I usually 5 my AOTY and work from there (barring a drought year), so my ratings are more relative than absolute. |
Deez
07.22.16 | Kayo Dot- Choirs of the eye |
