theBoneyKing
08.09.17 | I've probably made this way more complicated than it needed to be as is my wont but please read the top blurb first. Also please nobody give me like 30 recs, let everyone else have a say too.
Also I'm not committing to checking all of these out now but will use the recs as a guide in my ongoing exploration of the genre. |
Aberf
08.09.17 | I can literally make a list for this if you want.
EDIT: nvm |
butcherboy
08.09.17 | Catherine Wheel is a cornerstone shoegaze band, both Ferment and Chrome are classics of the genre..
also, Swervedriver, the albums Raise and Mezcalhead.. |

theBoneyKing
08.09.17 | Cool stuff
Aberf you seem to be hewing a bit close to some of the stuff I'm less interested in but I'll pick a few of those, I def want to check Angelic Process, Jesu, Daysleepers, Nothing and Lantlos at some point |
butcherboy
08.09.17 | oh, and Pale Saints - Comforts of Madness, for the more romantic, softer side of shoegaze.. |
bgillesp

theBoneyKing
08.09.17 | Sweeeeeeeet some real good looking stuff coming in, thanks guys :D
Yeah I've heard Isn't Anything and while it doesn't touch Loveless imo it's still pretty amazing. |
Cyberduck
08.09.17 | Curve - Pubic Fruit
Cranes - Loved (not exactly shoegaze, but aesthetically similar)
SKullflower - IIIrd Gatekeeper (more aggressive and instrumental)
Dean Garcia - Das Haus Vol. 1 |
Masochist
08.09.17 | [2] Catherine Wheel is a cornerstone shoegaze band, both Ferment and Chrome are classics of the genre.
also, Swervedriver, the albums Raise and Mezcalhead." [2]
This, absolutely. These are great albums, but Catherine Wheel's first two are necessities.
Also, you stated "The Big Three"...what are the big three to you? MBV, Slowdive and...???
I ask because I want to recommend Ride, which I assume is the third band, but is not on the list nor in the comments. 'Nowhere' is the album to start with, but the song "Leave Them All Behind" is one of the best songs in the entire genre.
I only have one additional album for you: Starflyer 59's 'Silver'. Early 90's underground shoegaze on the dirtier side of My Bloody Valentine. |
TheSpaceMan
08.09.17 | The December Sound - The Silver Album is possibly my favorite album ever. If you like the style of loveless, you'll probably dig it if you give it a chance.
The Verve - EP is good for the softer side of things. I second lilys and curve.
|
theBoneyKing
08.09.17 | Masochist, yeah Ride was what I meant by the third of the big three. They're definitely high on my priority list.
Lots of albums here I'd already heard about which is good, this will def help me narrow my focus a bit. |
StallionMang
08.09.17 | lovesliescrushing - bloweyelastwish/xuvetyn
essentially lo-fi mbv if they wrote more songs along the lines of touched/no more sorry/all i need |
Deathconscious
08.09.17 | Marriages [2]
Kairon IRSE! - Ujubasajuba |
theBoneyKing
08.09.17 | Cool Stallion just dl'ed both those albums the other day actually |
hal1ax
08.09.17 | thud - floret
bardo pond - lapsed
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - methodrone
medicine - shot forth self living
adorable - against perfection
scarling. - so long scarecrow |
adr
08.09.17 | haven't heard much shoegaze either, but Ride, Lush, Ecstasy of St. Theresa are pretty good bAnds |
theBoneyKing
08.09.17 | ❤️ you guys
Might make a separate list for all these and do sort of like what con's doing with his psych recs list |
TheSpaceMan
08.09.17 | That'd be fun |
TheSpaceMan
08.09.17 | For a more formalized list:
The December Sound - The Silver Album (MBV gaze)
The Verve EP - (mellow gaze)
Astrobrite - Whitenoisesuperstar (noise gaze)
Bowery Electric - Beat (trip hop gaze)
Niz - Stone (noise gaze)
Autolux - Future Perfect (indie rock/pop gaze)
The Fleeting Joys - Despondent Transponder (dream pop gaze)
mighta repeated some idk, and I highly agree with Curve, Catherine Wheel, Whirr, lovelies, Loop and Lilys as essentials |
McMegaMountain
08.09.17 | I'm one of the few who classify Deerhunter's "Microcastle" as a modern shoegaze masterpiece. I can't listen to it without hearing shoegaze. The second disc "Weird Era. Cont" is probably more in vein with traditional gaze but on "Microcastle" it's all over tracks like "Twilight at Carbon Lake," "Never Stops," "and the title track. |
theBoneyKing
08.09.17 | Nice stuff SpaceMan, I've seen a lot of good things about that Bowery Electric album, shoegaze x trip hop sounds like an awesome fusion.
McMega I'll have to relisten to Microcastle and pay attention for the shoegaze bits. Never listened to the Weird Era Cont disc though. |
zakalwe
08.09.17 | There's some great recs here, boo radleys are always overlooked so nice one fx.
One of my all time fave albums Painful by Yo La Tengo is essential.
Hows about
The Reegs
Spacemen 3
Black Swan Lane
This Mortal Coil
The Telescopes
The Sundays (more poppy but there's some navel gazing going on)
Clint Boon Experience - Life in Transistion (there was a thing back in the day known as baggy indie. Northern UK, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and one of the most underrated bands of all time Inspiral Carpets. This is the solo album by the keyboardist and although not shoegaze per se it's well worth a spin, it doesn't give a fuck)
Cocteau Twins
|
Sinternet
08.09.17 | stella luna - stargazer

theBoneyKing

theBoneyKing
08.10.17 | Hopefully? I won't move through these as fast as he has his though since I take a bit more time to solidify my opinions than he does. Also I'm not committing to listening to shoegaze 24/7. |
Papa Universe
08.10.17 | I didn't take other people's recs into consideration, I just piled up all I could pile up.

theBoneyKing
08.10.17 | If you'd read my first comment you would've seen I asked that nobody rec like 30 albums BUT a lot of those (or at least albums by the same bands/the bands in general) were already recommended by others so I'll let it slide :-) |
Papa Universe
08.10.17 | As I said, I didn't look up what the others have rec'd, I just put up all I could think of, knowing that with 40 comments 50% of it will already have been rec'd. |
theBoneyKing
08.10.17 | Yeah no worries man |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.10.17 | 2hat the heck is "boney shoegaze" |
Papa Universe
08.10.17 | As skeletal as it gets, I assume. |
theBoneyKing
08.10.17 | Are you criticizing my ambiguous syntax |
Tyler.
08.10.17 | 10 is so good fuck you |
Conmaniac
08.10.17 | boney's gazeventure |
Tyler.
08.10.17 | i was gonna give yoou recs but not anymore |
theBoneyKing
08.10.17 | plane is that intended as a rec? (I've listened to some of Sunbather before, seemed more metal than gaze at the time but should revisit it I guess) |
Conmaniac
08.10.17 | it b both ~blackgaze~ |
theBoneyKing
08.10.17 | Black gays |
theBoneyKing
08.10.17 | Anyways I'll copy these recs over into another list soon, probably sit on it for a bit since I won't have much time to jam the next couple weeks, then dive into it in earnest once I get back to school |
ShadowRemains
08.11.17 | keyblade's gaze list is what you're looking for: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=515826&listid=152870 |
protokute
08.11.17 | Ringo Deathstarr - Colour Trip the one you haven't said yet. |
TheSpaceMan
08.11.17 | @sgadow that's an amazing list but I think his goal is to get the essentials and avoid shifting thru the obscure. Lean cuts, no fat. |
Conmaniac
08.11.17 | when u make the list boney hmu I'll throw u some more yum recs |
TheSpaceMan
08.11.17 | Surprised you didnt toss him carnavas |
Conmaniac
08.11.17 | I've already tossed him Carnavas many times but if I must again I will (; |
theBoneyKing
08.11.17 | @Shadow, yeah I'm very aware of that list and there are def lots on there I want to try but as SpaceMan said I'm trying to stick to the essentials for now (I'll def try some of the more obscure ones people have recced me here too though)
@Con, yeah been meaning to check Carnavas, I'll add that as a rec from you when I make the list (space is getting low though) |
theBoneyKing
08.21.17 | In case anyone missed it, I put all these up in another list and will be doing writeups of each as I go through them. The first one is up now! |
